View Full Version : Electroluminescent rear bumper letter inserts

I had this idea today. I want to get some electroluminescent sheets and cut out the letters to fit in the rear bumper so that the letters can be illuminated.
Does anyone have a cad drawing of the letters? Someone must have it because so many people are selling those laser cut/water jet cut stainless inserts.
I think I could get these cuts to cut the sheets for me. http://electroluminescence-inc.com/customDesignServices.htm

Seen it done before, but can't find a picture.
You could use the Rustproof font and scale it up to match the bumper letter height and then covert the file into a vector image?

Can you get sheets of the stuff and just cut it yourself? I would be interested in that.

I decided to use white EL wire to outline the stainless letters, looks better in daytime than flat EL panel.

I remember pics of this done as well, and also can't find them now. Points to anyone who can....

Did the same thing by cutting out the letters, gluing red plastic behind with a neon tube on a switch.

How did you run the power lines to them? I assume you drilled small holes in the bumper.

I watched a few videos on YouTube about it and it looks like cutting it yourself leaves the layers exposed to the elements.

It would make an amusing 3rd brake light :)

Not my car, unfortunately.
I only claim the points for finding the photo, not doing the work :)

It would be interesting for somebody to Photoshop that side-by-side with Starglider's wire method (although his obviously has the extra "turbo" text). I like the one Dangermouse posted, but if it's that bright in real life I would worry about it distracting the vehicle behind. I wonder if would be possible to use some sort of sensor to auto-dim that based on light level - possible located inside one of the louvres, like the 3rd stoplight projects often do but actually within the existing structure?

Rustproof, or similar font that is available, does not match the bumper letter exactly. I put reflective letters on mine, but had to measure and re draw the letters on Illustrator to get them to fit right. Here is image of my bumper, taken with a flash to simulate headlights. So, this only works at night. In day light, it just looks like glossy black letters.

Not as cool as EL. But, I am cheap and lazy. The stuff I used is 3M Scotchlite.

I have the Illustrator file at home that I can upload. Of course, knowing these cars, my bumper may differ from yours.

Interesting. I swear there was a thread about it before that entire-car-for-sale thread. Oh well. I feel a bit better though about my futile searches knowing that the post doesn't mention EL or electroluminescent at all. Or the words "bumper letters," in that order.
I will give you some genuine internet points next time I see you! :)

Please do upload the illustrator file. Can you also export to SVG and upload that too?
Dangermouse's picture came from this For Sale thread:

Zipped file. See if that works for everyone. If not, I will have to upload to Google Drive and/or Dropbox from home. Thanks, Kane.
