Drinkholders question from VIN 10693 for sale thread photos

Hi Dave,

Do you know what this extra piece of something is below the drinkholders on VIN 10693?

I ask because I have the same drinkholders and mine aren't very sturdy. I was wondering if this is something someone came up with to give them more support and stability.

I never really looked at it all that closely. The black part is a hard plastic L-shaped part screwed to the bottom of the cupholder base that appears to have been added to give more support. The brown part is (yes) a piece of boxboard to protect the leather.

These holders were sold long ago but the guy disappeared.

Got it. I can definitely understand why/what the bracket is all about. The way the unit was designed ensures it won't tip to the passenger side, but there is very little to prevent it from tipping towards the driver's side of the car. Mostly because the small brackets underneath the unit that sneak under the lip of the shifter plate only "pinch" it in from one side. Looks like they added the bracket to pinch it in from the other side and sort of lock it in place. Thanks for the photo. Gives me some ideas to conjure up something on my own set. Cheers.

I have yet to find a decent way to install cup holders in a DMC that isn't ugly, damaging, obtrusive to either person or poorly functioning. The best item I've found (which isn't saying much) is a product you wedge between the console and seat. It leans at an angle of course, but 70% of the time, it works every time, its not permanently damaging and can be removed in a heart beat.

I saw a great cupholder on another owners car once...

It was a large cup, like a pencil holder, made of stainless steen with holes in it (anything would work , as long as it is big enough to hold your drink container, and strong enough to have the clip bolted to it) and there was a thin U shaped piece of metal bolted to the bottom "sideways". The U was very thin, and "clipped" to the floormat. It held the cupholder at the back right of the driver floorboard area, out of the way of the feet, but very accessible to the hands. And it looked good too.

A DMA member test fitted some cup holders he's working on in 3196 (he's modified the console in his own car so he needed a stock setup to test it in). They replace the little tray at the rear of the console. They look great, almost as if they were supposed to have been there from the factory. Hopefully, he will tweak the prototype to his liking and start making them!
