View Full Version : General Accessories - Ski Rack Adaptor

In 2008 I purchased a ski rack from our pal from NY Rob Grady. I learned about it from a posting he had made advertizing their limited availiblity on the original DMCTalk site.
Well it arrived nicely packaged a few days later and at the time I was very busy travelling around the country with work so I stored the box in a safe place and didn't think about it again. Then just the other day I saw it, opened it up and although it didn't have any mounting hardware that was easily remedied after a trip to the local ACE Hardware I got four bolts and washers for about $2.50.
FYI the original luggage rack has 4 holes that are threaded to accept a 4 mm bolt in order to attach the rack you need 4 of them and washers, I've forgotten the length but will post this information soon! I am very surprised and very happy with how strong and study it is attached to the rack!
Here are some pictures... and yes those are stainless steel Volant Machete skis that are in the rack! Volant's tag line used to be "Ride The Steel!". They no longer make stainless steel skis but I knew somebody at the factory here in Denver and these were a Demo pair that they were going to throw out when the company got bought out.

It is also apparent with the way the skis fit (barely) that this rack configuration was designed long before ski brakes became the norm!

Thanks, I figured since I live in Colorado "Ski Country USA" and all it was only appropriate to have a ski rack. Not that I would drive the Delorean skiing, that is what my Xterra is for!
I just realized I think I now have all of the original factory accessories that were availible in 1981.
The original purchaser of the car paid for the automatic transmission, car cover, floor mats and the stainless steel cleaning kit. I purchased the luggage rack and now the ski adaptor.
What am I missing?

Both stripe kits, unless you have those in storage and not on the car.

I forgot about the stripes, but I'm ok with that, IMHO the Delorean has a sort of timeless design. But there are two things that can really date the car to the late 70's early 80's, the side stripe, especially the wide one and white lettering on the tires.
I drove around today with the rack and skis and got a lot of positive feedback, I sort of wish it had the car's brushed finish, that would be a nice finishing touch.
I also never understood the sheepskin covers, because leather is so nice to sit on, you just want to make sure to cover the seat with a towel when it will be sitting in direct sunlight. But Bruce is right I do remeber that they were availible.

Yes, I have seen 2 or 3 cars over the years with both stripe kits installed at the same time. Wasn't very flattering IMO.

According to Steve Wynne, the stripes were intended accent and match the interior color.
Wide Black stripe for Black interior. I believe It was offered early on when only black interiors were available.
Thin Grey for Grey interior. The thin grey came out later for the grey interior cars.
It makes sense, but it would also be nice to see a document corroborating this.

Perhaps the skis were meant to sit side by side tips up. I'm sure 4 ski's would fit that way. 1 pair per occupant.
Btw, are those Volant Stainless ski's?
Also, are sure the mounting screws were 4MM. ( see Attached PDF ) The Luggage and Ski Racks were made in the USA, which is not know for using metric hardware. (Riv-nuts in Luggage rack).

That makes sense yes, you can also carry a snow board (or two really short ones) with this rack. Tips up doesn't work because the brakes get caught on the bag stop on the bottom of the rack and you can't pull the bar down and latch it. At least on this pair of skis because of the distance between the front binding and the rear and its not like these are mounted for big foot, I think they are set up for a size 10 boot.
Having said that... you have me curious... if the back rack point was between the front and rear binding it just might work well.
I also never carry my skis tips up (or forward) because I hate seeing the wind catch them and have the skis being "Skied" while driving 65 mph on the interstate, although in this case that's not an issue since this is simply for show.

We tried SAE first but couldn't get them to thread, including 10x32, the 4MM went in nice and smooth. It could have been that the threads were bunged up but it wasn't hard to start the 4mm and nearly impossible the SAE... Instructions would have made life easier, thanks.
I'm curious how many of these are out there since I never saw anyone post pictures of it on the car until I did.

There is no way they go in tips up as the pictures below attest. The skiis in the picture are 170 CM and 177 CM and in the late 70's early 80's the norm was to ski on extra long skis. I know because I was 5"7" tall skiing on 205 CM skis.
Even with the new "shorties" on there now there now side by side you are NEVER going to be able to fully open BOTH doors tips up without hitting sharp ski edges on the stainless steel skin. Tips down they fit just fine.

I think James told me 300 were ordered for distribution, but only 150 recieved. It may have been higher. The answer was in my Old PM's that were Lost on Talk.com
How much does a ski rack worth by these days?

Depends on how bad you want one. They DON't come up for sale very often. And when they Do expect to pay a PREMIUM. I don't think any of the vendors have any left. I recall James At DMCH mentioning 10 years ago, that a car that was in their shop being prepped for a Concours Judging had a Ski Rack kit with it (bonus points) for judging back then. He said, it was the Most complete kit HE had seen at the time. He said, they had few pieces here and there but nothing Complete. That was 10 years ago.

Well, after 7 weeks I finally received my eBay ski rack :thankyou:
Thank you to the French custom whom put a wrong label on my item, so they keep it almost a month a it was almost lost somewhere :banghead:
A big thank you to the seller who was here to help me to find it back :thumbup2:
So, here are a few pictures. I wonder about the 4 black screws? Looks like it the same than the rack itself, the 4 littles screws aren't in the pack and the paper neither.

Of Course! My father purchased my car in 1985 when it had only around 6K miles and still smelled new inside! When he passed away in 1998 I kept it! The sparkplug tool is still new and I have the 1st generation jack which is awesome, they should remake these jacks and put them in all new cars. With the ratchet to raise and lower it a 5 year old could use it. I'll post a picture one day!
But I don't think this was really an option, as I believe it was standard issue on all cars the only thing that changed was the jack.

Yes they are, Volant Machete's, a bump (mogul) ski! Volant was bought out about a decade ago and now they only make a limited run of skis and to get a pair you have to order in advanced. I don't think they make any out of Stainless Steel anymore!
Back in the day Volant made all of their skis in their factory in Denver out of Stainless Steel! Their tag line was "RIDE THE STEEL!"
I had a friend who used to work at the factory and he gave this pair to me during the period when they were shutting down the factory. The pair I have were a demo pair just lying around the shop! I will take a picture soon and publish.

you most likely know this already but the small bag full of stuff is the accessories kit for the luggage rack and not needed for the ski rack. Obviously you need the luggage rack in order to use the ski adapter. But I am guessing you knew that too!

Yes, I already purchased the luggage rack, about a year ago to Ed Uding, before the price increased.
But, I didn't know the small bag was a kit for the luggage rack, that's make two of them.

All I have to do know is find the right 4 screws to mount it on the luggage rack.
I don't know why it was not with the kit, not even the explanation paper.

Check post #10 from DMC5180 he put out a pdf of the ski rack adapter instructions. The screws you are looking for are SAE 10-32 x 2".

The jackets are rather nice. But like most I hate having to use any jack for any reason on the side of the road!

Not sure what picture you were looking for but to mount ski adapter to rack you will notice 2 holes in the top rail of the rack and 2 in the bottom. This is where the bolts go into and through the rubber on top of the ski adapter, if you look through it closely you will see holes in the rubber that go clean through.

I think Ed just uses his wife's account for anonymity. He no longer has his shop and is selling parts piecemeal on eBay.
