Has Anyone Converted Delorean to Run on Naural Gas

I made a suggestion to a friend who is involved with a LNG company to take a Delorean and convert it to run on natural gas. Has this been done before?

There was one in the UK a few years ago, but it proved troublesome to set up, possibly because it wasn't driven often. I believe the new owner was planning to return it to gas/petrol.

Not much room for fuel. LNG/LP needs a much bigger physical tank for the same range.

I thought about that. It seems a custom tank would have to be fashioned that takes up the room where the current tank is plus the trunk area.

sorry shannon, none of the tank. I just have a few photos showing a standard interior, inc. parcel shelf, which is why I think it must have been in the trunk.

There are two DeLoreans that run on natural gas in the database. Go to VIN Statistics (http://www.citizenkidd.com/DMC/pages/vinview_TOTALS.asp), then click on "Other Engine Conversions". Look for VINs 1178 (CNG conversion) and 16723 (LPG conversion).

The K-Jet system doesn't lend itself to conversion as easily as a carbureted motor. For most conversions they replace the carburetor with a bolt-on convertible one. That way you can switch back and forth between gasoline and Propane. Where to put the tank? that is a big problem. You would probably cut the floor of the trunk out and get 2 35# bottles to fit in there. Putting them where the gas tank is would mean a permanent mount and that means you must take the car to a filling station, you can't just swap out an empty tank for a full one. Unless the car is driven a lot or gasoline is hard to get or very expensive the conversion isn't worth it.

Dermot is correct, a article was done in by the owner for one of our club magazines, I will see if I can dig out some pictures. Dermot is also correct in that it has now been converted back to stock. There is however another one being converted at the moment. Infact it is Shell (who supply most of the LPG to petrol/gas stations in the UK) who are doing the conversion for PR use!

You should not have to do that if the car was already running unleaded fuel.

If it is done, it will be done my a company involved in the LPG business so I don't think they will worry about costs. I'm just trying to pitch the idea to one of the people so they can use it for advertising purposes.

Hear are couple of scans of the club mag article that Dean did. Unfortunately it's before the club mag went to full colour so is in B&W, this is from early 2007 so I'm sure LPG technology has moved on from when this was done. When the 'new' one is done I will post up the details, I believe it's being done as a article for the club magazine as well.
