View Full Version : General Any cold weather door struts?
My DeLorean is My daily driver, last year during winter on a particularly cold day I opened the door and the gas and oil started sputtering out of the door strut. It's been really cold again, 0 Wednesday, -4 Thursday and around 10 today(fahrenheit). Each day I've lost more gas and oil from the strut to the point it's almost like I'm opening the door without a strut.
Does anyone know of any cold weather door struts?

Toby at delorean-parts.com once sold Temperature compensating struts. I don't know if he still does or not.

Can't say I've ever opened the doors below 25 deg F but I've never seen any oil come out of the seals. Now I know the gas leaks out since that would cause the struts to loose lift power.

Nothing to offer on cold-weather struts for a D.
Temporary solution in case you did not already try it: Swap your blown driver door strut for the presumably better one in the passenger door. Should help til your get new ones on your car.
Just guessing most of your daily driving is solo.

I don't believe any one sells a temperature compensating strut due to the space limitations in the delorean design. The strut that you're currently using is probably from a poor quality oversea's sourced supplier.
I have new pistons on the way from my previous supplier that everyone seemed to like back in the day. Due to factory automation upgrades I can now offer these superior "gas springs" (the correct term according to the mnfctr's) at a very competative price and they should be more reliable than the other ones currently out there. They are American made with triple lobe seals and built to my specifications. I am expecting a new batch in 2 or 3 weeks. If your interested PM me when you have a chance.

Ruben,
Are your struts still oriented this same way? (piston pointing down versus piston pointing up)
2245 and I, July 28 2002. I was going on 18 she was about to turn 21, one of my happiest days.

The struts you're having the leaking problem with are likely replacements to these ones in your 2002 photo? (I didn't see any newer photos of your car uploaded here, sorry).
I have heard the advice of installing them in one orientation versus another with respect to the gas/oil inside, but yours is the first case I've heard of them leaking. Might not be the problem (poor quality item as Rob mentioned probably), but this orientation topic came to mind so I thought I'd mention it.
Yes the struts I have now are oriented the same way, they were fairly new when they first leaked in the cold last year. I didn't want to get new ones at the time. LOL, that picture is 12 years old.
