I am looking to buy a car from California and was just wanting to run a carfax on it and noticed it went from $20
To $40 for a one time check. That's crazy! So if anybody could be so kind and run one for me, I could even PayPal u some money to do it that would be awesome!!
Thanks
Steve

I'm curious about something...
$40 is a "crazy" amount of money to verify that the car you're considering purchasing, which probably costs LOTS of multiples of $40, is on the up-and-up? $40 is ridiculously cheap insurance, especially when paired against the cost of any car on which you'd want to run a Carfax report.

And I'd still want to see the car in person unless it's a parts car.

Thanks, but I can't seem to get it to work!

$40 to run a vin that sometimes doesn't even tell u shit is kinda a lot on money. I once had a car that was a rare saleen that ended up being stolen and carfax and auto check both came up clean.
So yea and the car I want to look up is a 2000 with 57k miles. So it may say more but chances are it may just say it was in a fender bender at most.

Yea this one I'm just gonna go get. But it is a good idea to look first. But I'm driving it back.

I got "Incorrect padding" when entering my entire VIN.

Same here. I'd like to check a VIN to see what states it has "lived" in, anybody know of another way to do that?

These "free" reports seem to have dried up once Autocheck got wind of the lifehacker stories and now seem to require that a participating dealership uploads a list of the VINs on their lot to Autocheck, and then it rejects any VIN that isn't in there.
Ebay don't seem to offer autocheck reports any more, without paying for it. A while ago, almost every car listing used to include a AC/Carfax report, which in my opinion should be a requirement for the seller to provide, but obviously it is to their advantage for multiple prospective buyers to pay $40 each for the same report
