Hi all, it's been awhile but I came across an article that led me to an ebay auction of an all original car in red. I remember most stories of the cars and what it takes to get one running and all the faults that come with a car sitting for 31 years. However I think the interior and undercarriage on this particular car are incredible. Maybe not for a driver but a concourse car. CK it out and please discuss. I'm actually surprised I didn't see it posted on the forum...or maybe I missed it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DeLorean-DMC12-2-door-A-beautifully-unique-true-barn-find-survivor-/161486243772?forcerrptr=true&hash=item25995487bc&item=161486243772&pt=US_Cars_Trucks The original article.....https://autos.yahoo.com/news/red-del...130046889.html

Example, look at the suspension.... 31663

I'm surprised a painted car is going that high, even with that low mileage.

(current bid, $33200)

It looks like it was an experiment from DuPont and the factory. That may be why the price is so high. It's not some bs paintjob to hide body damage. At least that's what I think. I really thought a few members would've commented on it but they may be keeping it quiet and not commenting for a good reason.

Some cars were painted by the dealers. Nothing to do with the factory.

I think it is probably easier and cheaper to strip a painted car than to get the underside in such great order.

Whether it runs worth a damn is another question.

No doubt, that's why I shared. There aren't even cob webs on the damn thing. Even part numbers are clearly visible.

Currrently at 42,500...WOW

A Vin # off by one digit that happens to tie in with a stolen car is a red flag for me. While the car does look super clean. Almost too clean, the paperwork issue would scare me away at that price. Actually at any price it could turn out to be a real nightmare for a new owner if he wants to get the Vin # straightened out. May even be a stolen car. Too many legal issues here.

Hey Chris, been awhile, Eddie here how ya been? We met at a meet a couple years ago. Anyway, the original paper on the windshield seems to be actually missing a number rather than an incorrect one. There're only 16 digits on the paper vs 17. However the fact that he mentioned the front tag being one digit off from the original and from an ancient stolen car doesn't help him one bit. Although the tag may never have even belonged to a DMC. If I were him that plate would've been tossed and not even mentioned....... period. It certainly doesn't help the credibility of the story. Could it just be the car has no luck with numbers, I guess anything's possible, but I sure wouldn't wager my hard earned money against it. The fact that he keeps mentioning the owners privacy also doesn't help him. If he's not bs'ing everyone in the first place. He probably bought the car and is trying to flip it without first registering it. Either way it' way to much mumbo jumbo to take by word of mouth.

It's missing the Check Digit, in this case, the letter X

Correct.

The weird thing is that the photo of the door jamb VIN plate shows the same VIN as in the listing. With "X" where the check digit belongs. Am unaware of X being more than a placeholder....a number belongs in that position.

Has anybody seen that on other D's?

This looks like it could be the VIN plate the car shipped with.

From the description (if it is to be believed) the car appears to be what he claims. My main concern would also be the paperwork. Too many "coincidences" to be explained away by typos. It also seems unusual for the car to have been painted UNLESS the car was in an accident, and after repairing the panels, the car got painted. In any case before paying a premium for a "survivor" I would do my homework. Maybe this IS the stolen car and was hidden for all these years? Questions need to be answered. At this price you can buy a very nice, clean runner that you wouldn't be scared to put mileage on. From the pictures it looks TOO clean underneath. If I didn't read the description I would say it was an overrestored restoration just looking at it. As Carl Sagan put it, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof".

VERY well stated. My buddy in TX told me about this car and lead me to the URL. It is NOT a "Barnfind" I'll tell you that much. Even though I'm new to the community (though 5 years deep) I know what a barnfind DMC looks like and that ain't it. That car could be rolled out onto the concourse and win awards as it is. The current and previous owners have put A LOT of money and time into that car. Something is truly amiss with this eBay posting and I fear for the winning bidder. I would stay as far away from it as possible even if I was filthy rich and had nothing better to do with my money. :screwy:

+1 for extreme dodginess on this one. As soon as I started reading "one number off, and paperwork" blah blah I lost interest right away. It gave me that bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. Hopefully the new buyer somehow finds this site and puts our minds to ease.

Agreed, the number plate mismatch, AND the vin being recorded wrong?

I'd be checking panels on the actual car and looking up histories. Then I'd still wonder where the heck this has REALLY been, because no garage in average places, let alone a BARN, will keep a car in any sort of shape close to this. If it was in a shipping crate in a barn sure, but I don't buy it.

Somebody did, though! Let's hope for their sake it's just a weird bit of car and just fine. :)

Actually "X" is a valid check digit, surprisingly, as well as 0-9. If I was at my PC I could post a picture of one or two other plates.

No need for a photo, sounds good and thanks for the clarification. Was curious about it possibly showing up on other D VINs, now confirmed. Who knew that a letter could be a digit? Any other letters as check digits out there?

Based on the photo in the listing and this report the VIN looks legitimate.

Looks like this barn find car is back up for auction on Ebay. Currently at $19K with one bidder and the reserve is not met.
