Hi all,

I've been registered on here for many years (i.e. a lurker!) but I'm a fairly active member of the UK side of things. Over the past 20 years or so I've had a couple of DeLoreans (VINs 5641 and 5284). Both October '81, LHD grey manual cars. This one is no different, but it has been nearly 8 years since I owned a DeLorean. I'm flippin' chuffed (a very UK thing to say I think).

Long story short(ish), my first car went part-restored to, what is now, the UK arm of PJ Grady (Mr Nicholson). He finished it and sold it on and I know the owner. The second car was a "good" one and I used it for a couple of years before circumstances (house move etc) meant it had to go.

We've since moved again to a house with a decent sized garage. I saw 4566 at Beverly Hills Cars for a good price and decided I needed to save her. So, she now rests in my garage:

Unfortunately, shipping is rarely a risk-free endeavor and she lost a (what looks like, original) tyre (and the aerial):

Mind you, I knew what I was getting myself in for and the key things are all here - a clean chassis and all the parts!
A broken windscreen (and surround), sun-damaged interior etc are all fixable but, hell, I have a DeLorean again.

I'll try to remember to cross-post stuff here as I restore her; I'm sure I'll have questions about parts and whatnot too!

Hope you enjoy ;)

Puzzled here. They swapped the tyre and nicked the antenna or they just damaged both in transit? If it's damage, then I know what you mean. They will always deny that it was them and it came in just like that.

Good luck with the resto! :) Looks like a big job ahead of you.

The tyre burst/went flat and during transport and whilst being moved about it came off the rim (as pictured). The aerial was snapped in two.. so I have both parts, but it's very much broken. ;)

Typically when a car is picked up pictures are taken and an inspection report listing any pre-existing damage. When the car is delivered it is inspected again and any additional damage is noted for a claim. If it is an original tire it was going to be replaced anyway but the antennae is something else and if the rim is damaged too. I would think you have grounds for a claim against the shipping company.

Unfortunately international shipping with marine insurance is not as clear cut as that. A lot of cars get damaged making the trip to Europe and I don't know of anyone that managed to get reimbursed for damage.

Mine had a few dents when she arrived in Melbourne. I reported them to the shipper, only for them to say that was the way she was when she was delivered to the wharf. She also sported a long scratch across the roof like something sharp was dragged across during either loading or unloading. Lucky I regrained it out.

You can't really prove it, unless you are there when you drop the car off, taking a ton of pics and the same upon delivery.

As it is, the car is in a condition I'm happy with. Tyre/aerial allowing. It's tough really - I've seen cars turn up looking like they've been rolled... and insurance rarely pays out. My car is a project at worst, a recommission at best. I'm not bothered. :)

Congrats! Looks like the damage is minimal compared to other stories and what the worse case scenario could've been. Just out of curiosity, what does your car need? Does it run at all? How's the interior? Auto or 5 speed?

willisit
12-20-2014, 01:19 PM
The interior is sun damaged but complete. I'm hoping to keep the interior and get it recovered where possible (dash/seats etc). The engine doesn't run, but it's only missing a battery to try it - I suspect I'll be clearing out the tank/pumps etc before I even consider turning it over.

First jobs are tyres/wheels, windscreen and panelling - then we'll see what the list of "things to do" looks like!

An unusual first step, I grant you. But before yee judge, there are a few reasons behind the crazy.

Firstly, the car's original tyres were shot. Only one held air. Two were exposing their underwear (steel) and were generally old. I didn't want to buy new tyres and mount them to old, corroding rims. So I went the hog.

Secondly, she has to be rolling for some building work (garage doors). Easier on new rubber!

Lastly, part of the restoration is frame work. Again, easier if she rolls...

The Wheel Specialists (other wheel refurbishment companies are available) did the work here. They did my Monaro wheels a few years back. Well recommended (no affiliation).

Not sure what it's like out there but here in the UK, these were the ONLY tyres I could get that matched in size and manufacturer. Sad times, but 14 inch wheels are pretty much dodos. They'll do for what I need. Beyond that, um.. new wheels?

Rear fascia came off yesterday, along with the grille. There is some writing on the rear...

As you can see, beyond a part number and a QA test (showing September 81 as her VIN confirms) it's nothing exciting.

I did also oil up a fair old number of bolts and nuts/screws as things start to come off. There are... remnants... of where rodents may have found homes too (behind the grille, in the suspension etc) so that's all out too. I have the wheels to mount, then I can test to see if the engine turns and then it's on to the real work!

I had an hour today, so did some small bits to keep the ball rolling.

First up, I can only work on the driver's side at the moment due to the position of the car. Every gas strut is knackered (if they worked, I'd really worry) and as any owner will know, working on a DeLorean with out the doors working is a pain. So, the headliner came off:

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8721/17111191485_5d1b8625c5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/s54k5R)DeLorean work (https://flic.kr/p/s54k5R) by willisit (https://www.flickr.com/people/41552280@N06/), on Flickr
More date-aligned stuff here. Mine is literally a day prior to an October build. Also nice to see the door was destined for the car. :P

Gas strut on. Since it's so simple to do, I didn't mind this. The door won't open all the way on it's own, so I think some adjustment is needed when I get to the body. This I'll leave to the experts!

Ignore the rotten interior...

Both front calipers off. Rears are more involved, but they're all being refurbed, so better now than when the wheels are back on:

Then to the tank panel. The tank is coming out and being binned. All new fuel system will go in when the frame has been refreshed:

I've soaked every nut in advance with penetrating oil. Nothing seized in this way and all bolts turned nicely. Had to use a breaker bar on the calipers but that's a little different.

So far the frame is better than anything else on the car!

Today the tank came out. It was already toast, but I needed it out to inspect more of the frame anyway.

Whatever is in there looks like oil (it doesn't smell of oil or fuel though) and it's never feeding this car again.

Getting it out meant I could see the front part of the frame and see if there was any obvious rust or rot (or leaking). Judging a book by its cover is dangerous, but this looks promising none the less:

When the frame is off/engine is out I'll be better able to judge where it matters, but what I've seen is solid. I believe it could be left alone for some time, but that isn't the plan, nor am I in any hurry, so the frame is coming off and being made ready for the next 30+ years.

All four calipers are off now (one needed a breaker bar for the entire thread, even though I soaked it several times!), so the wheels are on so I can roll it about. This is due to some upcoming work on the garage doors that'll mean the D has to move outside for a day or two:

The only downside; getting the tank out meant draining the radiator (which, again, is going) and the water was mostly clean but a bit milky in places. So, next weekend, the engine gets a looksee and a turn (if it'll do so). I've already checked the oil and it's golden, so perhaps recent. That doesn't mean it wasn't nasty previously. If it is, it is. Plenty I can do back there ;)

The sun was out today, and so it was time for the DeLorean to do the same. With recent work, she's been on axle stands for a while. Today, I dropped her down and wheeled her out for some work. Without brake calipers, she moved very smoothly (I just had to be careful I could stop the momentum!).

Some interesting stuff today. First off, I have really only had access to one side. I got the passenger door open today and was going to replace the gas strut, but discovered this:

That'll be an expensive fix! Oh well, when she finally gets to have her cosmetics done, it'll be on the list for Chris to fix ;)

This door also had a piece of trim hanging off. But, by a screw and not a clip. I have no idea why people own these cars and feel it's easier to do this sort of thing, but since the interior is being retrimmed at some point, I guess it'll be okay.

Today was, in fact, all about seeing if I could turn the engine. I took out the plugs, and disconnected what was left of the fuel system at the engine-end. Nothing worries me here, but most of the hoses are going in the bin - they are cracked or broken in places and there are few seals.
I popped off the leads and this one wasn't attached:

The rest are okay but the tips are far from consistent. This'll be an interesting build:

Flickr has a ton of pics of plugs and rats nest wiring I need to look in to - feel free to browse.

But, attach a battery, I did:

A turn of the key and we had lights! All door lights worked, even the headlights and indicators. The wipers moved.. so all in all, it could have been worse. Then, of course, it was...

Without brakes, I used the gearbox to keep the car still. I turned the key and the bloody thing shot off! Turning off did nothing - the starter kept on going. Luckily I got it out of gear and got the battery disconnected - and when reconnected it was okay. Odd. Anyway, the engine turns quite happily (not exactly planned that way, but still).
There are electrical gremlins here - a starter that won't quit is an interesting one. It might be barrel, fuse or even relay related but I'm not looking in to that just yet.

A pretty constructive day all in. More dismantling to come as I've found a partner to get the frame off and stripped/re-coated, so it's going to be an interesting summer!

!

Solenoid is rusty inside and stuck. You might be able to take it off the starter, take it apart and clean it up.

Thanks Dave - that helps a lot!

The engine is coming out soon, so I'll be able to inspect everything properly. I'll had a 12v supply to the motor on its own and see what I can find. If not, I'll be ordering new stuff ;)

More work:

Brakes are off for refurb or replacement:

Broken aerial is out too. It's knackered. Not entirely sure it's worth replacement, but I'll consider it nearer the completion:

The engine is coming out soon and the entire exhaust system (such as it is) is going in the bin:

More writing on the frame. Different the welded panel:

Part of the work over the weekend was removing all frame bolts. Pretty much all were hand tight. Not sure if that's normal (doubtful!):

I'm restricting myself to 2 hours a day on this. It keeps me interested and saves me waking up the next day feeling like I've been hit by a train. So, slow progress!

Anyway, I had to stop - garage work is starting Wednesday and the car has to sit on the lawn for three days, so I can't do any more without making it impossible to move. :)
