What’s delightful about a DeLorean?

For those of us enjoying our D’s just what is it about owning or driving our cars that delights each of us? Lots of things, obviously.

Here’s a starter list, not necessarily prioritized. What's cool about this car?

1. The elegant gullwing doors.
2. The timeless design.
3. The steady and responsive handling.
4. Gear ratios on the 5-speed that are so nicely spaced.
5. The way the car just makes people smile when they see it – assuming they know what it is.
6. Not needing to wax the body panels.
7. How balanced the car looks from high or low at any angle.
8. The decent fuel economy.
9. The engine note when cruising on the highway.
10. Being able to find DeLorean parts a lot easier than one can find them for a 30+ year old Lotus, Maserati, or Jensen-Healey.

Pile it on and be creative, you enthusiasts.

11. Having a car that's technologically advanced enough to be challenging but simple enough to be fun to work on
12. Constantly smiling and nodding at the constant cocaine/BTTF jokes and "how's that ol' Buick engine treatin' ya?" comments
13. Being the keeper of a little piece of automotive history

History... no doubt at all.

Fuel consumption of the delorean is NOT in favour here in Europe. That is another story, so I just keep it with its very rich history that still amazes me. I just hate it when cocaine jumps in the story that has hardly anything to do with it, but everybody knows about.

16. Most of the time, they don't even catch fire... right? :)
17. I just love looking at it in the garage. Someone suggested in a recent thread just taking a few minutes to sit and look at it - not try to fix it, or sweat the next repair/upgrade - just sit and look. I did it. It was great.

18. Lack of passenger space and 5-speed means none of my friends ask to borrow my car.
19. A good excuse to buy a new winter car every year.

20. A serious incentive to learn new skills if you happen to be a desk clerk like me
21. Something to challenge most mid-life-crisis purchases, even before you reach your mid-life-crisis (a topic on its own really)
22. A good place to stay dry when it's raining cats and dogs.

I love how wide it looks.
I love how it looks more expensive than it is.
I love that some people get as excited to see it as I do to see an exotic Italian supercar.
I love how low it is.
I love how some things are in funny locations, i.e. the horn, light switch, engine cover release, battery.
I love stainless steel and how it shines in the sun.

Its rarity
How it turns heads when in public
Retro design (tailights, louvers, high profile tyres, etc)

I love the wood panels.

I totally agree on that one - everyone doubletakes when I tell them there's wood panels in the car. It is pretty amazing.

It's like a Danish living room! :) Some assembly required.

How is "12. Constantly smiling and nodding at the constant cocaine/BTTF jokes and "how's that ol' Buick engine treatin' ya?" comments" going to help the purchasing of more contraceptives? Unless you're talking water balloons for the annoying people.

The constant jokes about not getting laid.

Which number would that be? I've lost count.

Post #12 not Delight #12 :) But I like the idea of keeping some water balloons around for the misguided engine comments...

It's true, I do spend more time under the car than under... never mind. I made myself sad. :)

OK, then a real one:

The simple joy of a smooth idle.

Think about it... how often do you smile when your non-DeLorean daily driver idles normally? Somehow an even-idling Acura fails to impress me. :)

Since I got my Delorean 5 years ago, I got to know a lot of people, even across the atlantic.
And I have a lot of friend-Delorean drivers. all very nice people.

Aaah, I understand now. Sorry, I was focused on the reason numbers and not the post numbers.

I suppose it would be somewhat irrelevant to state that I only have the most casual interest in Star Trek and no interest in Star Wars, so I'd never have fun at either convention.

That's my problem. I like the old Star Trek and TNG which no one cares about anymore because the shows are too far in the past, and I have no interest in Star Wars or comic books. Someone once told me to drive my car to a "Con," and I said "And do what? After everyone's done looking at my car, I'd be bored to death." Which is true.

If you're not otherwise engaged after they have stopped looking at the car then you might as well leave the con because your mission has failed. ;)

What mission? To get folks to take pictures with my car? To draw attention to myself? I don't really care about either.

I thought we were still discussing picking up trekkie or warsie girls at a con. That was the mission.

Oh, is THAT why I was told to go? I guess the guy who said that didn't know I have a girlfriend. Now it makes sense. Thanks!
