I saw this on BangShift and immediately thought of the DeLorean fuel pickup problems.

This technology is uses in many (all?) automotive fuel tanks....no one sees it because let's face it, when have you ever needed to replace a fuel pump on any modern car? NASCAR & other racing designs has used this liquid wicking material technology for years. Search "Walbro fuel pickup" & you'll find a hockey-puck shaped design with a filter media that works the same. You can use multiple pickup points with these designs, & they will close & shut-off flow if the tank is low & it starves that pickup of fluid.

Though this "blanket design" application is pretty useful & likely more effective since it covers the bottom of a tank.
