I'd like to get a poster of this image of JZD with the prototype DeLorean from March 1979. I like the image because I actually think the prototype is cooler looking than the production car, and this was taken at a time when the future looked bright for DMC, so for me it kind of captures the "Live the Dream" slogan...

This is a licensed photo, so getting permission to print a run of posters will not be cheap. I'm trying to see if I can get a group deal that would make it feasible, but that of course partly depends on whether there are enough other people interested. I'll publish the exact costs involved when available -I'm not looking to do this to make money, just to get a copy of the poster for myself!

So, if you think you'd also like a copy of this poster, and would be willing to spend around $60 to $70 (including printing costs) to get a copy, please let me know in this thread.

Agree with you on the proto being cooler looking with a few exceptions, those being:


The side mirrors
Wheels
Sliding door glass


I might be interested. How big is "poster-size" in inches? I'd have to take into consideration framing as well.

The max size the image is available in is 54 MB - 3555px × 5339px • 11.00in. × 17.00in @ 300 ppi

I think that should be good enough to print a poster 23 x 35 inches (according to a calculator here: http://www.vivyxprinting.com/how-big-can-i-print-my-digital-picture.asp)

Chris - The image is still owned and licensed through Corbis. Otherwise, I think if the original photographer still had copies, he would have been happy to let me make a poster for myself.

The cost involved to do this for a poster license is $1070 from Corbis, with printing costs on top. However, you are then licensed to print up to 500 copies (of course with the cost of printing on top).

I did a quick search for bulk printing posters, and found this place:

The cost to do 100 copies of the poster in 24 x 36 size, on 100 lb. gloss paper comes to $701.40.

So, depending on how many people were interested, this might not be as expensive as I thought. For example, if 100 people were interested, it would be around $18 plus postage costs ($10 to cover corbis license cost and 7 to cover printing cost, per unit).

Maybe this is something more suited to a company like DMCH or even the DeLorean Museum to take on as a fundraiser, as I don't relish the thought of shipping 100 posters!

Anyway, I guess the question is, if the price was around $17 to $20, not including shipping, how many would be interested?

If this doesn't work out, I think I'll just make myself a similar poster. I have a lot of high res pics of Proto-1 which I took when Tony showed us the car a few years back - a quick photoshopping of the background and I came up with the attached result, which I can just print at very low cost locally.

By the way, if 200 people were interested, this would push the cost down to less than $9 per poster! Granted, it would be probably hard to round up 200 interested people, although I'm sure they would sell eventually...

Just an FYI - for the original image at 11 x 17 and 300DPI, you are looking about half of the resolution at 24 x 36 inches (148DPI). I try not to do anything under 200DPI that will be printed to keep from looking pixelated . . and that is in addition to not knowing exactly how grainy the images is to begin with.

That said, I think it would be awesome if you can get this published, and it may look fantastic as well!

Tony Korody is the photographer. He has an impressive list of photo credits to his name - lots of potraits of actors like Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, business people like Steve Jobs and even a few presidents like Nixon, Reagan, Carter and Ford.

Just a quick update on this - I'm going to go ahead with this - I'm just waiting on confirming some information from Corbis.

I haven't worked out the exact cost, but it will be around $19 or $20 (plus shipping), and it will be limited to 100 prints only. This limits the amount of posters I have to ship, but also makes it a kind of exclusive limited-edition poster which I think might make it a bit more desirable, and will hopefully help it sell out quickly and help me get the $ invested back so that I can get back to spending it on my car instead! I'm also planning to include a small certificate with a bit of background and history on the photo, and it's number out of the 100 prints.

I need to work out what shipping would cost, both for the US and for anyone in Europe or elsewhere. I'm looking online for a suitably affordable but good quality source for shipping tubes, and then I need to take a visit to the post office and work out the postage cost including insurance. I hope it would be something like $5 shipping in the US, but whatever it is, I'll only charge exactly what it costs. If anyone has any experience with shipping posters, please let me know.

If anyone outside the US wants me to ship multiple posters together which can then be divided out locally, that might save some money on postage.

With the holidays coming up, I won't be placing the order until the beginning of January, so they won't be ready to ship out until at least mid-to-late January. However, given that there are only 98 copies available (one for me and I'm also sending one to Tony Korody to thank him for all his help), if you think you would like one, can you please drop me an email to [email protected] with the subject "DeLorean Poster" to reserve a place? I don't want any money until I actually get them delivered to me and I get my one framed and hanging on the wall so that I can show you all how it looks - but it would be good to try and gather names of people interested in the meantime, so just an email to let me know would be great, and I'll track it with a simple excel sheet for now. Anyone who has already expressed an interest in this thread or via PM, I'll make sure your names are on the list.

Last request for anyone in international clubs - I'd really appreciate if you could put a post on your club's discussion forums and let members know about this, so that they can get their names on the list also if they like, and as mentioned already, it may make sense to ship a few copies in one tube internationally. Michael - thanks very much for this comment - it made me think, and I did a bit more research into it. I want the poster to be a nice size without sacraficing quality - so, I'm going to get one test poster printed in 24 x 36, and another in a smaller 19 x 27 inch size at which the ~200 dpi is retained and see what is best.

With the holidays, it will be the first week of January until I can get this done, but I'll post the results then.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give a quick update on the poster project. I didn't go with a cheap bulk printing place as mentioned in the first page of this thread, as it started to sound a bit dubious when I spoke with them. They couldn't guarantee good quality, and couldn't provide a test print so that I could review the quality before placing the order for 100 - I didn't want to spend so much money without being sure the quality would be perfect.

I could have gone with a smaller size to have a better chance of a good quality print, but I really wanted to print it in large format, so in the end I shopped around some more, and started discussing the poster with a local print shop in my town. They have been great, and this afternoon provided me with the first test print in 24x36 size, on high gloss photo quality paper. I'm delighted to say the quality is amazing - the poster is really vibrant and very impressive in this size. The only downside to working with a local shop was that it is costing a few hundred dollars more - they couldn't compete with the prices I found online, but for me it was worth it to get a really good quality print.

I'll be ordering the 100 prints tomorrow, and will frame one of them and show pictures of the finished result then. In the meantime, I've attached some pictures of the poster to this message, including one beside another DeLorean poster from years ago to show how large this new poster is!

The not so good news is that I can't really do the posters for $20 afterall - I'm going to set the price at $29 to try and cover extra costs that came up, including the higher printing cost. Hopefully you still think it is a good deal for a poster of this size and quality, and rarity too.

Secondly, another bit of news - Tony Korody has very kindly offered to sign 20 of the 100 posters - and the profits for these signed posters will go directly to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research. I'm going to set the price of these signed posters at $75, and for each one sold, $50 will go to MJFox Foundation, so it will raise $1000 in total.

Lastly, I think i found a source for suitable shipping tubes for $1 each. I then need to check the cost of shipping a tube within the US, and to other countries, but I'm doing my best to keep the shipping costs as low as possible.

So, to summarise, the poster will definitely be in 24x36 size, very good quality, and it will have 2 options - either $29 unsigned, or $75 signed, which gives $50 to Parkinsons Research, a very worthy cause. I am still not ready to take orders yet until I get a definitive answer on the shipping costs, but for anyone who has not yet emailed me to reserve one, please email me at [email protected] and I will put your name on the list of people interested.

Yes, sorry for the delay in posting an update here, but this is the latest:

I have the 100 posters printed, and subsequently sent 20 of them to Tony Korody in California to be signed and numbered, and have got them back since. The posters turned out great, I'm really happy with them. The image is very crisp and clear and it looks great hanging on the wall - although it is hard to show the quality of these prints when taking a picture of them - lighting and the camera flash can make it hard to show how nice they turned out. Anyway, tried my best to capture the quality in the pics attached below:

I also bought 100 shipping tubes from U-Line - I got good quality strong tubes to ensure the posters arrive safe:

As I mentioned before, I'll only charge what it costs me to ship these. The shipping tubes cost me $170 including shipping costs, so that is $1.70 per poster. I looked into the shipping costs per tube, and it is $5 First Class mail in the USA, so a total of $6.70 for shipping.

Unfortunately (and this is some of the reason for the delay in the update), the cost to ship the poster tube internationally is very high - e.g. $32 per tube to France. I've been trying to look for cheaper options since but have not had any luck - so maybe the best option is to send one tube to each country if a few people want to get together and share shipping costs.

The price of the poster is still the same as I mentioned before - either $29 for an unsigned copy, or $75 for a signed one, of which $50 will go to MJF. Rather than sending multiple checks to MJF, I'll hopefully sell the signed ones pretty quickly and then send them one check for $1000 when all are sold.

I've started getting some posters ready to ship out, and I am going to email everyone who pre-ordered a poster this week to sort out paypal and shipping addresses for that first batch. Once I have those sent out, I'll see what I have left and will advertise the rest of them for sale properly - will make a new thread in the for sale section here at that time, and advertise them on other sites also. I'll also get in touch with all of you who are in Europe this week to see what the best option is regarding shipping.

Forgot to mention regarding the shipping costs - to those of you who ordered more than one poster - shipping cost is the same for 3 posters as it is for one - I'll just put them in one tube.

Lastly, forgot to mention another reason for the delay is that I was working on making a certificate to go along with each poster to certify that it is a licensed one of a hundred limited prints, but I have that ready now also.

Just received my poster today, it's surpassed my expectations, I hadn't quite appreciated that it is like a massive glossy photo.

I'm struggling to convince Jane (my wife) that the picture needs to take centre stage in our house but I'm really looking forward to getting it framed and on display, what a talking point.

I managed to negotiate having my copy hung up in our living room, and as you say it is a great talking point!

My daughters friends family was over recently picking up their daughter from a playdate at our place - their 10 year old son was with them, saw the poster and was full of questions about it and seemed fascinated by it. I made his day by giving him a free one when he was leaving which I believe he now has framed and hanging in his bedroom - wonder if I've helped make a future DeLorean owner?!

If anyone else wants one of these posters, please let me know - I still have some left, both signed and unsigned, but once they are gone, there will never be another print run - strictly limited to 80 unsigned and 20 signed copies (all licensed) of the poster were produced.

I know the signed ones are expensive at $75, but 100% of the profits are going to the MJF foundation - a great cause. If you would like one of these, please get in touch asap - I want to send the check for $1000 to MJF as soon as possible - thanks!
