I cannot move my shifter left or right. It only moves forward and back. It seems the cable might have seized up. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I have replaced a few. They get rusty where the cable goes through the frame.

Not difficult. A lift is nice. Then you have to adjust it.

If your engine ground strap ever fails the starter motor will attempt to ground itself through the shifter cable, melting it in the process.

It can also be the linkage. On one car I worked on, pivot bolt 100280 was rusted stuck and the car would not shift side-to-side. Before condemning the cable, disconnect it at the crossgate lever, 106652, and see if it moves. If the ground strap failed you also melt the throttle cable so I don't believe that is the problem. The car I worked on was stored for many years on dirt and everything underneath was very rusty. Deep water can also rot cables. If the cable is bad check and grease the E-Brake cables if they are not also bad.

I don't follow that - 100280 is the pivot on the crossgate, if it were to freeze the shifter would not move front to back. The cable is side to side. I suppose if it froze in a gear it would not move side to side OR front to back.

Ooops. I should have said front-to-back. Anyway my point is you cannot condemn the cable without first disconnecting it from the linkage to see what is stuck. It may be possible the trouble is in the transmission (unlikely).
