Which dipstick cover?

Nothing was holding in my dipstick cover except some RTV. It looks like something was once there, but its long gone. Does it matter which type of dipstick cover I replace it with? Anyone have one they want to part with?

Actually there is supposed to be a dipstick in there. Looks like you were using an old switch to keep the dirt out but you have no way of telling how much ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) you have. You need to get a dipstick part # 110134. You can see what it is supposed to be in your Parts Book section 4-5-2

Sorry, I wasnt clear. This is my engine oil cover, and I do have the dipstick. Looking on the site, there are two different parts. One mounts to the valve cover, and the other one somewhere else.

When you say "cover" do you mean the tube for the dipstick, or the actual cover to your engine (the metal thing over the timing chain)?

There is no such thing as a "dipstick cover". There is a seal that goes on the dipstick that keeps the dirt out and stops the dipstick at the correct point to accurately measure the amount of oil in the engine. For the engine refer to 1-1-3. The original seal is no longer available. There is a replacement that is a different style but will function like the original. If the seal is "RTV'd" , (glued to the dispstick) it may not be in the right spot. If that is the tube for the motor the tab that holds it to the block is missing (broken off). If you can't find it you can make one and weld it on.

Yes, its the tab that holds it on. There show to be 2 different styles. 102858 and 102104. Are one of these preferred over another? Are some particular to one engine? I will order one today, but just want to make sure i get the right part. I cant weld, so thats out.

The tabs are located differently. One bolts to the exhaust manifold, the other to the valve cover. No particular advantage to either although the valve cover version may be slightly easier to service due to the rust factor on exhaust stuff.

Try other venders. Isn't there a local welder who can fix you up? It would be quicker and cheaper, all we are talking about is making and welding a small tab. It probably may even be there, just broken off.
