Speedo troubles and missing piece

Ages ago, I replaced my angle drive and lower cable to remedy some wobble in the speedo between 20 and 40 MPH. I put the DMCH parts in and the problem persisted, and I left it alone.

Recently my speedo just stopped working and I have been playing around with the parts. It is sometimes hard to turn the input of the angle drive (wheel off), but when I take it all apart, each piece works fine, especially upper cable and up. I think the lambda counter clicks at high RPM. The angle drive pushes in and out of the hub nut a little, and kind of seizes up when turning sometimes. My old one does the same when I play with it. The dustcap was sealed with RTV and had not been sliding (I fixed that problem a while ago).

What I noticed is that the retainer/guide for the upper cable-to-lambda counter connection is missing. The little black thing that comes on the end of the upper cable, seen in pictures online. I am certain this is causing the wobble.

Can this piece be obtained by itself, and how hard is it to convert to bypass the lambda counter?

In the meantime, I'm going to look for a work-around.

You say the hub cap was sealed but how does the cap look where the cable seats into it? There should be a nice straight square going the whole way down. I've seen more than a few with a rounded seat so the speedo will act erratic.

Yeah, with a little more experimenting and examination, I found that my cap is rounded out because the new angle drive is seized. The angle drive turns just fine by itself, and the cable input turns just fine. But once the cable is plugged to the AD, it doesn't take the load. Wonder why it wore out so fast...

But I did manage to fix the bounce in the speedometer by putting a series of O-rings + grease on the counter to upper cable link to compensate for the missing piece, and crimping down the metal sleeve inside the counter onto the cable a bit (took the counter apart). Testing with a cordless drill of course.

The retainer for the upper cable is part of the speedo/counter.


and how hard is it to convert to bypass the lambda counter?

In this case you will need the long cable or find a way to connect both cables (which will introduce something like a lambda counter without the mechanism).
