I know that asking this question here will be like asking a kids whether they want candy or broccoli, but let's put all our love for the Delorean aside for a moment.

I want to do a project car and I have two plans in mind.

The aim is to build something that will not look dated or out of place parked next to other classy cars. I want to build something that will have universal appeal with everyone, especially the ladies.

Option 1:
3264232643
Take a 5th gen Mercedes SL. Preferrably a V6 model that needs an engine.
Put in a Viper V10 or an alternate power plant.
Mould the body to what you see in the pics above paint it gunmetal grey.
Some more mods as well as I think of it.

Option 2:
3264432645
Find a Delorean that needs a new engine or work. Put in a power plant from a Chevy Volt or a V8 or some other engine; keeping room to add two turbines on top.
Customize the exterior to include two proper jet exhaust vents part of the body like the BTTF car (for the turbines).
Put in the LED bumper and top strips from the BTTF car.
(No exposed wiring like the original BTTF car; its got to look like a factory fit.)
Customise the interior to include a large touchscreen display like the Tesla and Volt. Make it classy..
Wire up the LED strips so that they will light up whenever the car goes over 100kph. like the pic below.
32646

Most of my friends say the ladies will appreciate option 1 better. Its a more modern looking car, hard-top convertible and its got the luxury interior of the SL.
Except for her (https://www.facebook.com/ElaPasion/photos/ms.c.eJwdy4EJREEIQ8GOjmhi1P4b~_~_6BCKO8YTO2bAZm8Ru aVdkW3uNMlbrtbfpvtFOAp8rnqFSELxbrDLI6QaUxz7AkNojX5 wphdiA9PCsn~_XbcnIO6sBd3ng8dmCBE.bps.t.863095720/833454776697369/?type=1).. She's a BTTF fan.

I'd have to agree with my friends about option 1. But its hard to say No to a car with Jet thrusters in the back.

I couldn't open the attachments so I will hold off on voting for now.

I don't mean to be discouraging but when it comes to the ladies and cars most of them don't really seem to notice or care all that much. Just my 2 cents worth

As described above...

Option 1:
https://scontent-b-fra.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10857796_10152908546950935_2917886767916923383_n.j pg?oh=c4738041bb6397bdda9cee41a322a6be&oe=5568ACA1

5th gen Mercedes SL
Put in a Viper V10
Mould the body to what you see in the pics above
More mods as I think of them.

Option 2:
https://scontent-b-fra.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/10934066_10152908547305935_2412156062440379221_n.j pg?oh=6108ba4f2b0200130bad05e618f5d21a&oe=552C0425

Delorean that needs work
Put in a Volt powerplant, V8 or alternative engine
Add two turbine engines
Customize the interior with a large LCD like in the Tesla or Volt. Make it classy.
Modify the exterior to look like the BTTF car. (But no external wires like the original car)
Add the LED lighting strips so that they light up when the car goes over 100kph... (pictured below)

Don't know about the rest... I still don't see the images..

And yes... If you are spending cash on a car to get ladies.... Use that money on fancy handbags and shoes. They will love such presents;)

Neither answer is likely to get you ladies. If you're looking for an answer to what might be most appealing for your lady to be seen getting into and out of, I'd have to go with something more like option 1... that is after it's been painted gunmetal gray. The image you have is a bit flashy for what you're after. In other words, I'm glad you said you'd put a more classy paint job on it.

I don't think that most women are going to think a BTTF Deloren is going to do it... especially one that has been modified to be less like the movie car. Best guess, either people are going to like a BTTF car and want it to be pretty screen accurate or they're not going to be into too much at all. There will be exceptions but it sounds like you're going for a more mainstream answer.

Just my opinion, though.

That cartoon car looks like a Pontiac Firebird would be a better car to start with. Women don't care about cars.

I would vote against the DeLorean just to avoid having another Time Machine replica out there.

(This coming from a huge BTTF fan.)

If you have BOTH a Delorean and a MB you odds of impressing the ladies are better than have just one. Go with the Benz.

The reason I will be using a Mercedes SL as a starter is because I want a hard-top convertible. It the best starter, plus the SL is the perfect size for a 2 seater sports convertible GT car.

The time machine idea has been done so many times. I guess you could say the same about any movie car really. One thing about the Delorean idea, the Time machine looks are not for show. Whatever is on the car will be functional.

I suppose what you say is true. Ladies aren't really into cars and those who are, probably will want to be seen in a sleek flashy sports car than an almost Delorean time machine.

LoL... no.. it means that whatever goes onto the car, will not just be there for show. It will have a function eg:.. the huge vents at the back will be the outlets for the two turbines. the LED strips on the bumper and roof will make the car visible in the dark while going over 120kph.. So that other cars can move out of its way.. :P

I don't think a late model SL is going to get you that much attention. The DeLorean certainly will, though not as much with the ladies. Except for gearheads, nobody (especially women) will care what's under the hood.

Since I bought the 308, I'm still waiting for Christie to stop by and take a ride with me... so far no dice.

The 308 is a nice car. I think if I had that car, I'd need the moustache to go along with it.

I don't get it though. Why does everyone think that the idea of the project is only to attract women. My main idea is to build something that will be appealing to everyone; something that won't look dated 10 years from now.
I know most girls aren't into cars so my plan is to build something that women would look at and say, "thats a cool car"... not.. "what's that?"

I want to build something classy enough that when you drive up to the entrance of a 5 star hotel, it won't look out of place next to the Brands in the Valet parking area.

There are not that may cars that do not look outdated after 10 years. I know that you do not want to hear it but the DeLorean is the only one I can think of, but that comes from somebody who loves the shape of it. My wife, e.g. thinks that it is an ugly 80s car. So taste is always subjective and it is hard to find cars that do not look "out of time" in 10 years. A real classic car wouldn't, in my opinion. Something like 40s-60s cars. They are classy unless you put too much bling onto them.

And like several posters said: most women do not care about the car and I am not sure if you want to hang out with a gal that is attracted to you because of your car.
Some women like the attention a car, and therefore them, gets when driving it, but some find it embarrassing.

I would therefore not pinpoint the choice on the ladies but rather on what YOU would like to do. And YES, DeLoreans are more sausage magnets, so maybe not a good choice. But I do not even think that your second choice would be better. A classic MB (like 1988) might be better, but that would increase the price and might limit your choice in the power plant.

Although on a side note: I would be interested how you would put a Volt powerplant into a DeLorean. That would call for another thread.

I'm not really sure about that yet. The idea is to combine make a sort of EV-ER. I haven't figured out all the technical details yet.

There is also another engine that I would really like to try.

Where are you going to source two jet turbines compact enough to fit in the vents over the engine? Where will the separate fuel cell for jet fuel go? How are you going to handmake an ev-er, something that Fisker failed doing, and cost chevrolet billions to do *adequately*?

I mean I'm all for "shoot for the moon and if you miss you'll be among the stars", but this all seems insanely complex for something that you want to attract the ladies with?

knightjp
01-26-2015, 02:56 PM
Yeah... the Delorean project does have quite a few things that needs to be worked out.

To me, the Chevy Volt is probably the best idea out there. Its not a hybrid in the traditional sense. The electric motors power the wheels and the petrol engine only turns on to supply electrical power when the batteries are low. The Volt power plant was only mentioned to give an idea of what I was planning as the power plant for the project.
The turbine engines need only be big enough to replace the petrol power motor. Chrysler used the same for a Le Mans racer in 1993.
I thought that was a really good idea. I'm sure that I can source the turbines given enough time.
Another thing is that the vents are going to be bigger.

As others have already said, I don't think either will do much for the ladies and both will look dated. Modding a DeLorean halfway will look weird and I think doing the same to a Mercedes will have the same result. You'll get attention..."That looks...cool?" But, I think with all the money you'll be spending and time too, either just buy a true classic, or something new. Granted, you obviously just want something to work on, so do what you like...just don't expect to get the results you're looking for.

All I'm looking for is to build something cool. I know I made it sound like I'm looking to build something just to attract women, but that is not it.
As for the special lady, TBH there is a certain someone. Full story here (https://julxrp.wordpress.com/?s=girl+trouble). I just don't want what I build to be a turn-off for her or any other lady that comes into my life.

Ha! I knew I smelled some heartbreak;)
There is no project that will attract "the one" that is better for you. Experience has taught me that the one who truly loves you, will support and cheer you along any project in your life no matter how cool or geekisch it may be.

So do something you love... And the special somebody will love it too;) if she doesn't, then you best dump her while it's still in the early stages.

I'll preface by saying this, I'm not trying to get into your personal business but since you've put all these details out there to share with our community, I'm going to toss a couple of things out there. Additionally these are just my suggestions/opinions so take them however you want.

Do what makes you happy, period.
If you pine after someone this hard and publicly, she's either going to blow you off completely or make you her bitch. Either way, you probably won't be happy. (cracking whip sound)
Look for another job. Regardless of how this works out, you're in a tough spot there.
Blow her off back, to a degree. Be friendly and sociable but not pathetic.
Go date someone else for a couple of months and make sure she knows about it.
Be a little bit of a dick. For whatever reason, girls like this.
Drop all the social media crap or at least become less involved.
Care less about what others think (life lesson across the board).
If it's meant to be, it will be. If it doesn't work out, move on. Life's too short.
Take up a new hobby or perfect a current one. I assume this is where your car project fits in.
Life is a garden, dig it! (Joe Dirt)

Okay... lets look at the two options on a practical perspective. No.. no women. I'm just going to assume that I'm never going to get lucky with women and move on from there. From here on its just me. :)

Obviously when you build a project its something to drive. One of the criteria in my mind is which of the two will be practical as a daily driver. Not just something from special occasions or weekends.

Answering these questions for me is a no brainier. Do option 1, the SL. It'll be "your car," your design, your work, etc... but it won't have the "complications" of option 2. Lights that come on at speed and additional, large parts bolted on (even if they're bolted on neatly) can lead to issues. They're non standard. Even more, option 1 is a hard top convertible.

In my opinion, if you're sold on one of these two options, it's option 1 all the way.

That is awesome! And the last one totally works with DeLoreans. Ask Dave (sdg3205) on this forum. He did this with a yellow lab puppy and his DeLorean was a chick magnet.

Hence: buy whatever you want and put a puppy in there. :rock_on:
