Temperature Guage Acting Erratically

I took my car for a spin this afternoon. Everything appeared to be working fine. Just before I arrived back home my temperature guage began working erratically. It would flatline then it would start jumping around and flatline again. What's going on with it?

Try removing and reinstall the bulkhead connectors. That is the most common place to have intermittent with the temp gauge.

He means unplugging and plugging them back in. It should take 2-3 minutes tops. Just remove the cover that has the jumper cable instructions on it.

You're right. For some reason I was thinking I need to do a contortionist act and remove the binnacle and fiddle with the wiring there. That's what I get for reading posts early in the morning before several cups of coffee.

Could also be a loose/bad connection to the temperature sending unit. Easy to check since you are in the same area as the bulkhead connectors. You are correct about it also possibly being a problem in the binnacle.

I had a problem where there was a little corrosion on the back of the gauge. I just used a pair of needle nose pliers to wiggle the nut and it has been better ever since.

I just looked under the dash and was able to see the back on the gauge cluster.

Mine flaked out like that back in the spring of 2013. I ended up pulling the cluster out and cleaning EVERY point of contact on the PCB. That fixed it along with a few other intermittent issues I was having. Like a random flutter in the Oil Pressure guage and a couple instrument lights that were not lit up but checked good with continuity accross the bulb.
