View Full Version : Electrical HELP! Flashers and Indicators not working

I wanted to see if anyone could help on this.

I have been going through the wiring in my car and have the majority of it sorted (thanks in large part to Dave at MW) but I am still stuck on a couple things and I want to give Dave a break from my questions. Right now my interior is totally, 100% gutted, so all wires are accessible.

So here is all I've done with the lighting system (and electrical)

Did the Relay update kit including new fuses.
Found several looped fried grounds at the relay compartment (repaired that)
Took the Hazard Switch apart and cleaned all the corroded contacts
Cleaned and soldered the taillight boards.

When I turn the headlights on, the parking lights come on, so I know the bulbs, at least in the front are good.

If I press the hazard switch, I can hear the click of the relay, but only the right arrow indicator on the gauge cluster flashes but not any of the lights around the car.

If I use the indicator stalk, same thing, the right arrow on the gauges lights up, but not the left and still no indication of light at any of the turn signals.

It is also making the fast blinker noise.

I feel I'm missing something here. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Fast blinker sound is usually an indication of burned out/missing bulbs. Did you check all indicator bulbs?

Did you check the rear circuit boards for contact weakness or breaks?

Just a few ideas.

I did check the bulbs and replaced the ones in the rear altogether. I also cleaned and soldered all points on the tail boards so I know they're good.

I would just feel a lot better if even 1 light would blink instead of 0.

Your front parking lights and signal lights are duel eliminate bulbs. So you can not say the bulbs are good when the parking lights go on.

The fast blinking should fix itself when the outside bulbs are working.

I guess I can double check and make sure ALL bulbs are replaced. I'd be hard pressed to think that all 4 of them are no good though.

Justin tending to try and help clarify for you (Justin)...

The lights which come on with hazards or turn signals are the ones on the front of the vehicle, underneath the headlights, and have amber plastic lenses. In the rear, the outside bulb on each side, with the amber/yellow plastic lens.

The four lights on the sides of the vehicle, referred to as marker lights, come on with the headlight switch. Those lights have amber plastic lenses on the two front quarter panels and have red plastic lenses on the two rear quarter panels.

When you press the headlight switch once, you get the parking lights coming on, which will be the front two amber lights below the headlights and you will get the centre bulb in each taillight coming on (the middle of the five bulbs, red tint, in between the two brake light bulbs).

When you press the headlight switch the second time, those lights already on will stay on and the low beam headlights (the outside pair) will come on.

Using the steering column stalk to indicate a turning signal, will make the front, amber "parking" light flash on the corresponding side (or both sides in the case of pressing the hazard button) and the rear taillight outside bulb will flash too.

This is how it was designed to work when it left the factory. I say this because there is a modification out there to make your side "marker" lights flash with the turn signal indicators.

I'm not sure what your car has, but when you mentioned in your post about "four lights flashing" I was just trying clarify you weren't mistaking the side marker lights as part of that "four." Not trying to be an a$$. Just trying to help you get it right in case there was a misunderstanding of what lights were meant to be flashing. :)

I think that is a good thing to clarify.

I do not have that mod. For the 4 lights, I was referring to the two amber in the front, under the headlights and the two rear indicators. The side marker lights stay solid when the headlight switch is pressed.

When the parking lights or head lights switch it depressed, everything works properly, the parking lights and rear tail lights, then head lamps come on respectively; The brake lamps work when the pedal is depressed. So from what I can surmise, this issue I'm now on is isolated to the Hazard/Turn Indicator circuit.

Try wiggling/unplugging/plugging back in the connector at the hazzard switch a few times and see if that does anything for you. I had a bad connection there at one point and I think the symptoms were similar to what you're describing. If you said you had corrosion there and you cleaned it up on the switch side, there may still be corrosion on the terminals inside the plug.

Valid point. I can clean the connector there and see if that helps with anything. I can honestly say that I did not touch the plug at all. So that is a likely culprit; even if its not the cause of the problem, it still should be done with everything out.

You mentioned updating relays. Did you have a look at this one?

http://store.delorean.com/p-7021-flasherhazard.aspx

It is up under the drivers footwell on the same bracket as the wiper delay module and seatbelt buzzer.

Maybe one or more of the connections on that thing is wonky? Do other aspects of your steering column stalk work? Horns, wipers, highbeams, etc.?

Here's a picture of it. Mind the mess. This was back when I was sorting things out kinda like you're doing right now.

I have not done anything with the relay, I've given thought that it may need to be replaced, but wanted to eliminate all other options.

So to answer your question, the horns, wipers, high beams all work, the washer pump doesn't, but that's the pump, not the switch and when i move the stalk up or down on the indicators, you can hear it make noise and the indicator light on the gauges for the right side lights up and flashes (left does not, but still makes the fast blinker noise)

Hi Justin,
Just a word of caution when you remove the flasher from the gray plastic socket. That socket can be very brittle. Here's another thread on that: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?11334-Flasher-Socket-Needed&highlight=Flasher+connector

Best of luck sorting out the problem.

The left turn indicator is most like poor contact of the bulb holder to the PCB but could be burned out too. Do all of instrument illumination lights come ON (5 bulbs) ?
