Hey guys-
Anyone out there running the exhaust setup that Hervey sells? Any pros or cons to that sort of set up? I wish I could afford a spec 1 setup, but that thing is pretty spendy......just looking for opinions right now while I save up for my new exhaust solution.

My opinion based on what I have seen of the Hervey exhaust is this.
Better access to belts and heat away from belts.
They seem to rust after awhile though.
There was a Delorean at last years DCS show that had a modified V6 Camaro performance exhaust with no cats. The owner only paid 130 dollars to have it installed. Sounded great!!

I think it was a flowmaster 40 (1in 2 out) muffler the owner worked into the stock system. Definitely good bang for your buck.
With Hervey you get what you pay for. Its a cheap exhaust system and slapped together. Very loud and obnoxious unless you like that kind of thing. Best bet is saving up or buying a used stage 1.
On a side note I will never understand why the exhausts for these cars is so damn expensive. Over 2 grand for a complete setup, which contains about half the pipe of a regular vehicle. I just dont get it.

RND? What RND? It's not rocket surgery... Any good exhaust shop could build one off's all day long with experience, a pipe bender, and welding equipment. Of course it would cost you just as much but buy a custom one but by now I would think DMCH and DeLorean Performance (or their suppliers) has built jigs to make the pipe sections.

Just bought a new system for my 2001 Jeep WJ. It has the 4.7 V8.
I'm bringing it back from AZ in March and it has a huge crack in the muffler that won't pass safety. I figured for a bit more I could get a system that is proven (on literally thousands of Jeeps, arguably tens of thousands) to increase hp by 15 HP and mpg by 1.5 mpg.
$340 bucks.
Then again, if you're moving thousands of systems a year versus, say 50......
Doesn't matter - still want DPI's spec 1. So. Much.

If owners are interested in doing a large group buy I can come down on the price. All comes down to inventory management. Between spec I systems, turbo systems, cat backs, frames and everything else we inventory close to 300k in inventory constantly. Lead time on doing smaller batches is short enough that I manufacture as needed on exhaust components. SW would love to build in higher quantity. If we had 25 owners commit I would be willing to do a batch of 50 and could bring the price down significantly.

I'd be interested. What is "Significantly" I saw it in Dayton and really liked it.

I believe you can get the system with cats or straight pipes however I may be wrong.
HERE is the URL for my exhaust experience with Stainless in the UK. I appear to be the only one with this problem so there is hope but even being the odd man out, they are not concerned about my problems and its MY problem, even with a "lifetime guarantee".

There is an option to add CATS, but it puts one right next to the alternator.
My Delorean was suffering from rust mites when I purchased it and the original exhaust system was toast. I replace it with Hervey's exhaust system and was pleased with the quality of the product. Only problem was with the unacceptable interior noise levels while driving the car. After about a year I again replaced the system this time with Josh's system which is much quieter and allows one to again have a normal conversation inside the car while driving. I think the biggest problem with Hervey's system is it positions the two smaller mufflers directly under the two rear body pontoons which transmits the sound directly into the cabin of the car. On the other hand it does have the advantage of giving one more room inside the engine bay to do repairs without getting in the way like Josh's or OEM's system does. Comparing all three the OEM system is the quietest, Josh's comes in second and Hervey's last.

I"m not sure on the orientation of the uk exhaust converter sections but we took added care to keep ours as far away as possible. I can't say that I have seen a single alternator "cook" due to a spec I or a stage I for that matter. Stock units are usually on their way out anyways with the tell tail seep out of the case.

I have the UK SS setup as mentioned earlier, and yes you can order it with cats, they have shipped dozens to the states, and to date I have only really heard of one issue, which again is linked earlier in this thread.
Being in the UK, having seen it in the flesh and having heard good feedback from others it was the logical choice. A nice balance between performance gains, and not being too noisy.
7 Years on and I had to remove it as part of an engine out job which turned into an engine swap. The system came apart easilly despite the 7 years use and went back on to my new engine without fault.
The reason I mention this in particular is because some people site other systems as having the benefit of better engine acces, presumably systems which put two silencers/mufflers down the sides rather than along the back as per OEM and the UK system.
However I really don't think that should be a deal breaker, use of good stainless bolts, copper grease and spring washers when you install it and years down the line you can probably have the back box off in 15 minutes, which given how infrequently you are likely to need that kind of access really isn't worth worrying about.
The polished finish is an option, or at least it was when I bought mine, and is a waste of money, all bit it minimal, as the system will discoulour as soon as it goes through a couple of heat cycles anyway.

Do bothe the headers and mufflers rust or just the mufflers? Also, is there a more quiet muffler solution?

Do you have to remove a header to get at your starter, or could you snake it around if need be?

I can confirm that Houston's "Performance Exhaust" headers block starter motor access, but the right-side catalytic converter is not so close to the alternator that it does any damage. (I currently have everything but the headers off of my car.)

Just wanted to report some prices that I have recieved for the UK exhaust.
W/o cats -- $1256 (815 pounds)
W cats -- $1915 (1243 pounds)
No matter which system you choose its about $30 packing and $150 - $200 s/h depending on where you live. VAT would also be included if you live in the EU, and not if you live in the states.
May be a stupid question, but does anyone know if the systems that are offered by DMC and DPI are the same (stage 1) or are they a little different? I just want to compare apples with apples while making my decision.
Also, do they offer versions w/o cats at a reduced price? And though I can't find it now, I thought i read somewhere that installation was included at the price point of $2200 from DPI or DMC, Is this true? If so, does one get a discount if they decide to install it themselves. Vendors feel free to chime in.....
Thanks

Good to know, thanks! I think I have heard enough about Hervey's system to discount it as a possible exhaust solution for me. The price point is good, but I really don't want to have an obnoxious sounding exhaust. I also don't want to have to take a header off to swap a starter if need be.

Josh @ DPI mentioned that you can get his exhaust with "off road pipes", so without cats is an option. I am not sure what the cost difference between cats and off road pipes is, though.
I can't give an opinion one vs the other because I only had the DMCH exhaust years ago for maybe a day before I returned it. I had originally ordered theirs and then decided on the UK exhaust, I cant remember the circumstances but DMCH sent me an exhaust anyway. I can tell you that I did enjoy my UK exhaust, I like how it sounded, I liked how it looked and also liked the ability to do work without removing the system (like the starter as mentioned - some systems require removal in order to remove the starter).

Very different in every regard. If you compare the two systems to each other side by side the only thing the same is the use of two headers, converters and a common muffler.

BTW the other issue with his exhaust is the mufflers are staggered unevenly once fitted to the car and can't be aligned properly. I installed a customer supplied kit...just once...that was enough for me. The alignment problem is because the piping is too short on one side. If you try to even them out one side (can't remember which one...I think the pass. side) falls off! I had to resort to welding that side on to even approach an even installation and it still looked like crap to me but the owner was OK with it.
And yes they are noisy and create an irritating drone on the highway. I hate drones of any kind! Interpret that as you see fit.
I think the worst part was when I mentioned these problems to John he got upset and said I'm the only person that ever complains about any of his products. I guess I did complain a bit about alternator failures, fuel hose leaks, and clogged new brake hoses and his answer was always the same so I guess I am pain in his butt. Oh yeah and the "lifetime warranted" clutch hydraulic's that leak after one year. I just found that one out. I guess I'll be tossing out his rebuild kits too as there is no warranty that will fix that. Add that stuff to the parts that I'm making myself (with help from others of course).
When I tried his door pistons and found the quality to be sketchy I went back to my old manufacturer and they worked closely with me to build them to my preferences. About the same time he came out with his (bootleg-Mexican-third shift-out the back door) Stabilus pistons and told me I shouldn't try to make my own parts if I wanted to buy from him. I mentioned that I was making my own parts back when he was hawking books for a living and long before he entered the Delorean world. I'll make anything I want to make especially when I didn't care for the quality of other offerings. He didn't like that either.
He was incensed that I was "cherry picking" his inventory and raised the prices on the things I did buy from him. Talk about "cutting your nose to spite your face". My purchases from him dropped from a couple thou a month to a few hundred but I've made a lot of new parts connections as a result so I suppose we're both happy now. I imagine he won't like this post when he gets to it but John if you're reading this you know every word is true.
One thing I don't do is BS people.
I've got to admire his Texas go it alone toughness but it gets old after a while as you never know what's going to set him off next.
Yeah I know I really should keep with the subject but I just get annoyed thinking about this s--t sometimes. Thanx for "listening"!

Depending on whose headers you use, you may want to inspect your engine mounts before installing the headers. Some headers make access to the engine mounts difficult.

Good to know. I suppose it would be much easier to swap the mounts out with no exhaust installed. Though, you would need to disconnect the tranny mounts yes? I've never even thought about swapping the motor mounts before...

With this exhaust system do you have the option of using the opposite mounting holes on the head than stock or do you use all 4 holes per cylinder on the headers?
I just noticed that the headers in the picture has 4 holes per cylinder. Also, do these systems come with holes for an 02 sensor?
