Does Gray feel more roomy than black? Is black easier to add custom stuff too?

My first DeLorean was a gray interior car, and I really liked it. I had hear of people feeling claustrophobic in the black cars, but I have owned a black interior car for about 2 years now and like that one as well. . .no claustrophobia at all (though I am 6 feet tall). Adding new accessories would be easier to match the black, but I think that the black on gray looks good as well.
And, black cars are not solid black, with the carpets and headliners. . .
I am planning on taking my car and making the interior a two-tone with a mix of black and gray components.

I really wanted black, and still do, but my car had grey. I just received my new two tone DMCH seats to mix it up a little bit. Its just too hot in South Texas for black interior

I prefer the rather severe, austere look of the black interior, but the grey is very nice too.

A low mile, totally mint grey interior looks great! I have black and really love it, actually I prefer it. The problem I see with grey is odd discoloration and as the materials age (the sun being a big issue) it ends up looking a bit "off" piece to piece... Black seems to age much better. Also, having sold a bunch of NOS seats both in black and grey, the grey seats were a bit stiffer for some reason and had a few dye issues here and there. The black NOS was softer and perfectly uniform. I understand that this is because the grey dye was more like "paint" (I use this loosely) and the black dye is more liquid and soaks in much better. Anyone know more about this?

It's hard for me to choose between the two. I think black looks clean and luxurious, but there is something about the grey interiors that I really like. The D' is probably the only vehicle that I prefer with a grey interior.
You could always do something like the previous owner of my car did and do a custom two-tone interior. He went with a blue and grey combo. I wasn't a fan looking at the pictures but it really grew on me after I saw it in person.

I always thought the black looked more luxurious, but the grey looked more roomy. The grey is also cooler inside when it's hot. The black on the other hand seems to hold up better with age because it doesn't fade/tarnish as easily, and you don't have to clean it as aggressively. The grey looks great when it's clean and crisp, but much worse when it's dirty or poorly maintained.

Having both, I must say that the black is a LOT hotter. Even in NY. For a car with tiny windows, this is a big factor. But I prefer the look of black. Nick is right though, the gray looks roomier.

What I mean by both is that IMHO the best interior is the rarest one which was used on a limited amount of the 82 & 83 cars.
It used light grey carpets and headliners combined with black interior panels and seats which provide a nice contrast and a more spacious look.
The black seats and dashes hold up better to the sun. The grey carpets used on the 82/3 cars was a finer textured carpet that I prefer over the coarser grained 81 carpets.
This combination provides better sun damage protection than the 81 grey/light grey with a less closed in feel than the 81 black/dark grey combination.
It's the best of both worlds and also the rarest so the answer is black/light grey. In other words a combination of the two is best and they're out there but you have to find them.

In shopping for my DeLorean, the Grey struck me as more appealing than the black. (I do prefer the black floor mats with the grey though).
When shopping for my Grand Caravan I insisted on the R/T trim line. No matter what the exterior color, the interior is black. I Love it over grey.
It's all in your preference... :hihi2:

Mine is grey, but I'd like to have black for the exact reasons Nick points out.

So that ultra rare interior combo adds like $50k to my car's value, right Rob? ;)

The interior is mainly a matter of personal taste. It has little effect on the value of the car except that you would not see a mixed interior on an early car and grey was rare on the early cars too. I prefer the grey, it doesn't look like a black hole and doesn't get as hot from the sun. The original prototypes were tan going towards orangie. I think the gold cars are also tan. The black isn't really black, it is more of a charcoal, especially the seats. Hard to buy a Delorean if you are that choosey about the interior.

Actually one correction to point out about the seats... The original NOS black stock I have and have sold is very much a rich "black", not charcoal. The DMCH black repros (and some others I have seen) are more of the charcoal as you say (a main reason I don't like the reproductions). In fact, the original seats are deaper in color to the eye than some of the other interior parts, I assume mainly because of the way the light plays with the textured surfaces. I was joking when I said the value would jump by $50k for the mixed interior... But to be honest, if I bought another D, I would spend an extra grand or two for the mixed interior. I love it and really feel like the best of both worlds to me. But hey, everyone has their favorite and nothing wrong with that!

This thread is useless without pictures.
So come on - fans of various interior colors - post what you consider to be the best example of that mix.
Here's one that was just posted on the Eurotec forum by A Van of 11753, a Middle East car with light grey carpets and black seats and dash. He has refinished the seats and installed black mats.

I've owned both and prefer the grey interior. Of course it's a matter of personal taste, but the black interior is like an oven in the summer. The grey feels roomier and is significantly cooler in the summer sun.

I've now realized that either my filing system for pictures of my car has gotten completely out of control to the point where I can't find what I'm looking for... or I don't have any current pictures of my interior.
I've been meaning to grab a few new ones, but need to wait for the subzero temperatures in my garage to improve. I'd hate to snap something on this freezing cold car while I'm out snapping photos of it.
I have a black interior, but to me it always seemed like it had a lot more two-tone than purely black. I like it and haven't been claustrophobic or sweltering in the heat. Living in Canada kinda helps with that.

Alex - Nice! How do you like the steering wheel? Is it good quality leather?

I love it. It feels stable in my hand, nice and sturdy. Someday I will get a real Momo maybe, but for $40 this was a winner.

The best interior is the one you've got.
