Parking break pads replacement

Hey All

I am replacing my parking break pads. (one of the pads is missing)

Is there any special adjustments that need to be made or is there any surprises i should expect?

it looks straight forward, but i don't know if there is a ratchet system in place or any thing like that. Like a auto-tensioner that i need to reset.

There is a bolt that acts like a pin that the pads hinge on. Sometimes they can be difficult to remove. Work it out slowly, back and forth if you have to. The adjustment is that big slotted screw. You remove the cotter pin and set it as tight as you can without putting any drag on the rotors when the brake is released. The automatic adjuster never works so don't worry about it. The glue holding the pad materiel on ages and the pad materiel falls off of the backing plate. Pretty common. The big problem with the mechanical brake is if either one doesn't work the other won't either. Make sure both cables move freely and actuate and fully release both brakes.

The thing you need to know is that when a pad is missing the retraction fork that pulls it back on release will have bent into the void left by the missing pad. If you don't replace the fork too the pads will drag and if you try to straighten it it will break or just bend itself back to where it was on the first use. In short you'll need a new fork as well.

I actually found that I lost one of my pads recently, so have the caliper on the bench to replace it. Rob, can you confirm from the below website which part you are referencing that needs replaced?

I'm assuming you mean part number 18, as it's the only piece that is malleable enough to bend/flex easily enough with a missing pad? Mine doesn't look malformed but I'd rather fix it all in one go if something is wrong!

Yes #18 is the retraction fork. You can measure the width between the arms compared to the other side to see if it's bent because visually it's hard to see. A couple MM difference is all it takes to drag the pad.
