Water Return Pipe - any good quality stainless options?

Hi there,

I have torn into the VOD, and during the process, I saw a fair amount of rust on one end of the water/heater return pipe. Besides the DMC OEM reproduction, is there a good quality stainless steel option? I saw previous posts about problems at one time with the DAP SS version, and there was a link to a DPI version, but I can't find it.

Any current recommendations?

I'm using the Hervey stainless version. Works fine. Others have had success just using silicone hose there.

I've been running the silicone hose to replace that pipe for many years with no problems.

Silicone hose has worked fine for my car for the past 5years.

The only reason that pipe is there was for assembly line ease, i.e. they didn't want the assembly folks in Dunmurry putting the intake manifold in place. The engine came in from France fully dressed.

So - the only downside to using a one-piece hose now is that, in the unlikely event it failed, you have to remove the intake for service. Which you'd probably do anyway.

In the shop we have a bin of re-plated OEM pipes that we use. I've never seen one rust all the way through to where it leaked, but I have thrown away a few that seemed pretty close. They get rusted from the outside in due to the same crap in the valley that rots the block. If you take the intake off every few years to keep things clean, and fix leaks promptly, that line should not give any trouble.

There was a stainless version of that tube I ran across years ago that didn't have the "bump" at the end to help capture the hose clamp in place, that was a mess as the hose would pretty easily blow off and/or leak. Be sure to look for that feature in any replacement.

This pipe has been obsolete in our builds and service procedures for years. Unless a owner absolutely wants it to remain and or is having preservation work performed we run a single piece of silicone hose from the water pump housing to the heater hard line on the frame.

We have for 3 years new made heater pipes, fixing old rusty one,s was taking to long.
