Photo Video usage feee or compensation

What is fair compensation for making your DeLorean available for commercial usage photos or videos? This is for a non-BTTF conversion... as was from the factory.

After searching the forum, I decided to start a thread regarding appropriate fees for making the DeLorean available for commercial photo and video use. I realize the commitment can range from minimal to months but why not see what we have to say.

This stems from a local company wanting to video in my garage tomorrow (it is winter in MN so the car stays inside). They said they would be willing to compensate. The question is what is fair and customary. I don't want to gouge but my maintenance fund can always use a little boost.

So if you are willing, post what you received and for what.

I've let a couple of local companies/news organizations do this, and never charged for it. My motivation may be different though.

On a personal case, you could charge anywhere from a free lunch to $100/hour for your time.

The photographer owns the photos, which is normal copyright, and is using them to advertise his business. The D owner asked for a copy of the photos after the fact and the photographer is charging him $50. Not a huge sum, but a bit much considering that the D owner did him the free favor in the first place.

There have been a couple of threads on this. I charge $500 for the day for static display and they pay for insurance and transportation. I get a copy of the video or pictures. If I come along I get food with the crew. If it involves moving or passengers the price goes up. Usually all negotiated by the broker I have listed the car with. The broker gets his cut ahead of me so I net $500. I also do some for free depending on what it is. A charity would be a freebie. Or something local that I would go to anyway like a movie showing or a store opening. If the guy in the UK negotiated the pictures BEFORE he could have probably gotten them for free.

Brokers are very local. Production companies use the locals as much as possible, so should you. Do a search for cars for rental for such things as commercials and see who is popular in your area. Mine is for the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. In my area there is a company that makes a directory of all of the services that production companies use like cameras, lighting, trucks, props, catering, etc. All the stuff a production assistant needs to coordinate to do stuff. My broker pays to be advertised in it so if anyone needs cars they know who to call. At some car shows brokers sometimes advertise and any interesting cars they solicit for their list. Once you pick one it costs nothing to be listed but you have to be ready to go on a moment's notice when called or they go to the next car on the list. You will find generally only 1 or 2 are the main "go to" guys for certain things like cars. I would be skeptical about how much action you can get in MN. The NY area is a lot busier.

For my case, this was an employee conference/sales event they filmed for. They came to my garage and spent about an hour videoing via a GoPro & Ipad. They gifted a $100 restaurant gift card...to my wife's favorite place. Since she is not as committed to the car as I, the restaurant will win some bonus points:-)

A local community college celebrated its 30 year anniversary with a "1985" theme last Saturday. The guests mostly consisted of philanthropists that had donated funds for college scholarships. A very worthy cause. So when the organizers approached me about displaying my car during the event, getting compensated never crossed my mind. I was just honored that me and my wife got to partake in the banquet and even had an honorable mention in the invite(!)

My point is, if the purpose is strictly commercial and for-profit then I can see asking for compensation but if it's for something like the above, then the fame and glory is plenty for me.

I agree and I hope this is a position that ALL DeLorean owners take. We should be generous to those who need some generosity and for those who will profit from us, then let's share. I also encourage owners to proactively reach out to the community to help via our marque.
