Doing a little deep cleaning tonight, and decided to remove the right front fender to get to the broken guts of the factory radio antenna.

Upon removing the 8 bolts that hold the top of the fender to the body, each bolt had a stack of washers between the fender and the body. Some had 3, some had 4. Is this common on all DeLoreans, or another bit of creativity of the previous owner? I checked the left side too and it's the same way.

I've heard of the term "fender washer" before, but never actually seen them used on fenders.

That is exactly what they are. Factory as well.

Hi Barry,

Depending upon the type of washer, they were either installed at the factory, or for your car, they may have been installed at the Troy QAC.

According to the Troy QAC Parts Log, your car received at least a little attention at the QAC back in late October 1981. See attached.

Note: Fender washers and shims were in large bins on the QAC floor and these were not parceled out like the other inventory parts.

For those of you who have not checked your VIN against the Troy QAC Parts Log database, you can check it out at the following link:

Thanks again to Parts POG, Chris Duvall, for keeping this log, so many years ago.

The washers, fender washers, are used as shims to adjust the position of the panels so they line up with each other. You should use a piece of masking tape at each bolt location and put the # of washers on the tape to aid in reinstalling the panel. Fender washers are just washers but they have a larger OD for more support.
