Looking at my engine bay, passenger side through the wiring harness running along side
Passenger valve cover.... There is a yellow and brown wire going no where?
Anyone no what this is or where it's sopose to go?... I can take a pic if needed?
Thanks

It's the extra wire used for the regulator on the early "Ducy" alternator. Ignore it or tape it into the harness.

Yellow brown is the idiot light. Solid brown is the one you don't use.

You're right Dave. The question becomes what is the idiot doing for light and what's triggering the alternator?
Perhaps a picture of the alternator hookup would be helpful?

Ok so... Where would the yellow brown be hooked up too?... I will take a picture and post it.

It's the trigger wire for the alternator's regulator. Send a picture of the back of your alternator so we can see what the PO hooked up to power it.

I added these photos.... Also included a photo of a little box with 2 red wires one with a connector...
Any info would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

The box would appear to be a very old, very crude, external voltage regulator that was probably added in addition to a likewise alternator that bit the dust on a PO and is now retired as it should be. Remove it and smack it with a hammer so no one can "defile" your Delorean in a similiar way. Touch up any frame rust. Trace the solid yellow wire and the solid red ones to their source and remove them. I can't see the source wire used but if you remove the tape to the splices we could help you there too. Attach the dangling Brown/Yellow to the voltage regutator on the alternator. If the alternator does not charge replace it as it appears to be an 80's analog unit and is probably on it's last legs anyway.
If none of this makes sense consult a local mechanic as this is an electrical class 101 problem that any decent mechanic should be able to solve.
The previous owner should be banned from owning another car and his mechanic "tarred and feathered" and run out of town. I'm just kidding about the mechanic part that would not be a trend I could get into. As for the PO I'm semiserious if there is such a word ;-)

Ok... I will do my best when I get it up on my lift. Thank you. That little box did confuse me... From my pics, can you see it doing anything now before I remove it and disrupt something? Red wire at top of it and looks spliced going into down the harness.... Another red wire from it not connected to anything..... As far as the solid yellow wire and red wires, excuse my ignorance, but what are they and why should I remove them?... Car runs and drives fine now... Alt is charging somehow? Ugh. Lol New to deloreans obviously. Also, how would I hook up the yellow brown to alt regulated? Where is it? Lol....

Hmmm. This could take more time than I have given your level of experience. Remember what I told you?
"If none of this makes sense consult a local mechanic as this is an electrical class 101 problem that any decent mechanic should be able to solve".
I think that should be your next step. If the pictures you sent reflect the overall condition of this car, and they proably do, then you are in this way over your head. Unless of course you have a rather large bank account to draw from to pay for all the work that you can't do yourself. This was a very common occurance when the cars were selling for low numbers but not as much now that the values of a decent example have climbed. What may have seemed like a bargain could quickly turn into an Albatross if you get the reference. This car needs a Delorean specialist to at least go through it and tell you what's wrong so you can decide rationally if if is worth keeping or better to get what you can for it as is. Show us some overall pictures of the car (especially the engine bay and frame/suspension areas) and I/we could advise you with a little more certainty.

Well congrat's the car is in much better shape than I anticipated with a beautiful interior, clean engine bay, nice body, and a refinished front frame extension etc. I can't tell if the extension was replaced versus repaired from that distance nor the quality of the work. From what I can see the main issues will be doing additional frame rust work, suspension bits, steering rack etc as well as any normal wear parts that are coming due....fuel, cooling, brake, transmission systems etc.
For what you paid it looks like you got a fair to good deal in today's market. You may still need to budget a fair amount of money to fully sort it so I would suggest picking a good shop and have them give it a thorough checkout and prepare an estimate for you to consider. Does that sound reasonable or are you determined to learn how to work on it yourself? Where are you located?

Thank you.. It is very nice car. recently before I bought it last year had new transmission, new springs and shocks, new coolant flush, all rubber hoses, radiator, fuel pump, sender, new exhaust manifold gaskets, brakes are original... Tons of recent work... But drives good for what it is... And yes, I have all DMC MANUALS and I'm determined to educate myself to do the work needed... :).

So back to my wires? lol

Where are you located? Might be worthwhile to take your D to the nearest vendor, even if you just get it looked over and do the work yourself (buying parts from them supports them too :) ), but I don't see your location in this thread yet. City, state, county, etc.?

Way up North eh boy are you in trouble! Just kidding as you newbies will have to get used to my rather warped sense of humor. It's the only way I retain my sanity after 34 years of this. There are people up your way who would probably be willing to help you out. In a pinch I can offer very attractive towing prices from your "neck of the woods".

As to your last question the red & solid yellow wires don't belong there and are probably connected to either end of the solid brown 12V wire that is extranious on a one wire regulator setup. That yellow/black "trigger" wire is sitting there unused waiting to be hooked up to the regulator. Send us a better shot of the back of your ancient alternator and I'll tell you were to stick the B/Y wire. You'd probably be safer ordering a new alternator at this time but we can give it a go!

I'd be more inclined, since it's reportedly working, to either leave it alone completely until it fails (i.e. the thing stops charging the battery) or tear it all out and properly install a new alternator. If you start hooking up loose wires you might cause something worse to happen than where you are now. If you happen to somehow bypass the regulator and the alternator takes off (high voltage) you can damage a lot of other expensive car parts.

Unless of course your budget allows for it, but being "new to DeLoreans" has me thinking that budget would be better used for things that are actually broken.

On the other hand, I'm also curious about how long this alternator has been in service. If it was installed shortly before sale, I'd be hesitant to call it "reliable" and might want to swap it out for a proper setup before bad things happen. If it's seen quite some road use however, clearly it's working. Do you have any documentation (service records, etc.) that indicate when it was installed? Or are you able to contact the PO to ask?

You do want the "battery" light to function. Not so much to show you the alternator is bad but to give you a quicker indication of a broken fan belt. When the belt breaks, you will quickly overheat the engine.

So as long as your battery light comes on with the key on and engine not running, I would just make sure the existing wiring is solid.

04-02-2015, 07:30 AM
Let me get this straight! You guys seem to be in agreement that he should just leave this mess alone until it fails? If it's working now it won't be long before it doesn't. The bat. light/regulator wire is dangling loose above the motor. There's a butched external regulator screwed to the frame. The yellow and black wires don't belong there and I'd assume the connections are as sloppy as the external wiring we can see. The alternator appears to be ancient and incorrect.

If the car was in my shop I would;
1) Rewire the alternator back to stock configuration. (15 to 30 minutes depending on variables with the crappy wiring)
2) Loadtest the electrical system and check for any draws.
3) Encourage the owner to upgrade the alternator to an updated unit even assuming the the thing actually pass's a loadtest (remote possability!).

To just ignore this and wait for an inevitable breakdown seems ridiculous to me!
I have a few questions for the owner.

1) Does the battery light come on when you turn the key to the on/run postion?
2) Is the car starting with no problems or jumping?
3) What does the voltage regulator read at idle with all the accessories on?

I know the next response will be that the voltmeter is not an accurate measure of charging system operation and I fully agree. I'm just trying to extract whatever information I can from a new/technically challenged owner. If he wants to leave it alone why did he ask for advice about the obviously poor wiring job which even he recognized to be suspect? Yes he can just leave it alone but I would stay close to home and make sure his AAA tow policy is up to date in that case. Why are we even disagreeing here? I've got work in the shop to do so you guys can take over from here.
Rob

If he wants to leave it alone why did he ask for advice about the obviously poor wiring job which even he recognized to be suspect? He didn't. He saw extra wires and weren't sure if they should be connected or not. If it were my car, I'd swap the alternator entirely as you advised, hence my "unless of course your budget allows for it" verbage. My budget personally would, having just bought a new car and fully expecting some initial financial work into it.

My "bottom line" is that it drives now, and if it's been driving for a while, it can probably wait until funds allow for a more "proper" setup. However,f it's a relatively new addition, get rid of it before it does any damage period! Frankly, considering the alternator's hackish job from the PO, I'd be hesitant to say that it's the ONLY hack job on the entire car. I'm sure there's more, and until it's gone over by a vendor or an experienced owner, it's hard to prioritize this one single instance. PO only knows what's lying in wait, yet to be discovered. DPI Josh has shown me some crazy, crazy stuff going on with other cars, some far worse than this, that have led to very bad situations. Point is, it's definitely a priority, but may not be "top" priority.

I apologize for upsetting you Rob. Definitely wasn't my intent here. :(

I'm not upset but slightly annoyed yes. If you read this thread from the start you will see that I already covered much of what you and the others said....twice!
That's why I had him send pictures of the rest of the car to make sure the rest of it wasn't as bad as the alternator wiring first. Did you even read the whole thread before commenting?

I'm a Delorean mechanic by trade and you aren't unless I'm mistaken? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think I've proceeded systematically in this case. Why I have three people jumping on this with contrary opinions mystifies me as I actually could be in the shop making a living. By all means take over as I'm done with this thread before I actually do get angry. It's not worth the hassle so by all means take the lead guys. As I already said this car should be gone through by a Delorean specialist if he really wants it sorted properly. Does anybody actually read entire threads before posting anymore?

Rob, with all due respect, if this car was in your shop you would strongly suggest this be fixed properly but in the end it is up to the owner because he would have to pay for it. This thread began BECAUSE the owner wanted it fixed but now, as long as it is kind of working, he might not want to. I agree it is a problem waiting to happen but there are usually so many others it is hard to pick which one will go bad first! When you see this kind of work on a car now you have to be suspicious of everything. I am sure, if this car was in your shop, you would find PLENTY to fix and with good reason. Fixing this is not just hooking up a couple of wires, the alternator is going to have to be replaced and who knows what it will take to get the alt light in the binnacle to work? Just to replace the alternator might take a lot of bracketry to get it right. To get the light to work could cost hundreds of dollars. My guess is there are other more urgent issues to be fixed on this car.

I did not use swear words, I didn't flip out, I did not tell the guy he HAD to do anything! I was answering his questions while probing for more information. You are a young man Shep and it appears you get riled more easily than I do but at least I have the experience to back it up. You need to chill out! I wasn't singaling you out either as you seem to think.
It's threads like this, and I'm not referring only to you here Shep, that make me think my time would be more productive in the shop. I was doing fine and being systematic in my approach and then everyone went in other directions and that's fine but I'm not sure I want to be part of threads that go like this one did. In the future if someone questions my reasoning and approach I'll just drop the thread and go back to work where I belong. This place is a quagmire!!!

The wiring job is abyssmal Dave it needs to go. If the alternator works after the wiring is cleaned up then it would be his option wether to replace it but I wouldn't drive a car with wiring like that IMHO! I'd still like to see a better shot of the alternator but as you can see here it's probably best for me to abandon this thread to you guys. Everyone has different opinions here....even when they don't!!!! BTW I don't damage expensive car parts but yes he could without the proper information which I was attempting to give him.

Okay, when you've come back down to Earth from your fantasy land you call home, maybe you'll get some sense knocked into you. The fact that I don't agree with you (or anyone else for that matter) does NOT give you a free pass to be a stuck-up prick like you're being. Contrary to what you may believe, you're not the only voice in this forum, and certainly not the overlord of opinion either.

I tried being nice, I tried being gentle, but frankly your aggressive and flat-out insulting manner of posting makes that extremely hard to do. I am baffled as to why you would intentionally put yourself in the center of a mess like this, much less create it, then try to weasel your way out of it. Why Rob, why? If only I were able to publicly share all my contributions to your partnership. Maybe next time you call your buddy and tell him about how you're amputating the hand that feeds him you'll see what a big mistake you're making here.

If you change the alternator you will most likely need the idiot light to work for it to charge the battery. The old ducy does not have this limitation but most modern alternators do. When I changed out my ducy the new alternator was a one wire hookup for the idiot light. I did not use the suggested procedure and instead kept my old ducy plug and used a male spade connector to connect the alternator idiot light wire and one end of a resistor to the brown/yellow wire plug (idiot light wire side) and used another spade connector on the other end of the resistor and plugged it into the brown wire side of the plug which effectively bridged the brown and yellow/brown wire together thru a resistor. The alternator will now charge whether or not the light is functioning. Of course it the bulb goes you will want to replace it, but if you are far from home when it goes you can wait til you get home.

If there is a downside to the valuable input brought to the forum by the recent addition of Rob as a member here, it is that he may very well be unaware of what has (and continues to) go on with comments made by Shep.

Shep, if you look back at a number of threads in the past couple of years, the common theme for ones getting ugly is you, not anyone else. You can reread as many as you like, but it always comes back to things getting twisted around the way they weren't apparently meant to be, and you're in the centre of it.

I hit the ignore button long ago on your contributions, so I don't really give a crap what you do. I say this only to try and help keep Rob from leaving, hoping he doesn't think any less of many others on this forum that don't need to stir the shit as much as you tend to do.

As someone who's been on the receiving end of your comments Shep I have to agree with Jonathan. As a fairly recent owner (especially when compared with Mr Grady) I value his input a great deal. He has far more knowledge, experience and cars under his belt than anyone else I know of, and as such I want to do whatever I can to preserve his invaluable input into this forum.

He has been both fair, thoughtful and polite.

Please consider what Jonathan has said and let him speak without fear of retribution and undue criticism.

Please, if you want to let off steam then feel free to direct it at me via pm, it won't bother me any more than it has in the past, and leave Rob to pass on his valued advice.

Maybe then this thread will resume it's "Gentle" course. I PM'd "pmotors" in the meantime to see if he wants a private tutor at a good price....free!

I'd say for the most part that the dust up on this thread is much more mild than flame ups in the past. Bottom line, the time spent by any vendor to contribute to this site and help owners diagnose issues and offer advice is super valuable and much appreciated. I'd prefer if all members didn't use curse words or inflammatory innuendoes towards vendors or other members for that matter. If there is a perceived "beef" with the way anyone is commenting or responding to a posted comment in a thread, try to PM the person first to get clarification or air out a grievance.

I consider this issue closed. The owner of the car in question has clearly received all of the advice they would need to either fix their problem or find someone locally to help them fix it. Godspeed. :)

Not sure about the first picture but the plug in the second is supposed to go to the Thermo-Time switch. on the water pump under the hose on the left side. Your wiring harness looks all taped up and re-routed. Someone was messing around with it. Does the car start well when cold?

Agreed the first photo is probably hack work - maybe a prior center stoplight or some alarm remnant.

Thank you David and Dave.

I´ll check if the wires on pic 1 are "alive" and when, to figure out their purpose. If not, just to tape them securely.

I´ll look for the water pump. So far it hasn´t been a problem starting the engine when cold, but I´ll keep that in mind.
Thanks again for your support.
