Hello everyone,

Well it's been a long project but I'm finally done restoring vin 16811. An 83 5 speed with black interior that I've owned since 1999.

Beside doing for the most part a full restoration, I've modernized the car using several iDevices, custom software, Atmel based hardware, viper systems, hacked software and more.

The car has functional HUD and a full compliment of voice commands, touch screen door launching, engine start and much more. It is still a work in progress as I keep getting suggestions and more ideas as time goes on.

The car itself was already in excellent condition with 38k original miles. I've taken most of the car apart to update and restore pretty much everything on the car. The trunk and pontoons have been resurfaced and painted as well as each part of the car was meticulously refurbished. Some custom modifications were done to the interior to compliment and allow some of the mods to be possible.

Special thanks to:

I hope everyone enjoys seeing what I've done. I would love to hear any feedback and suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks everyone! Please enjoy.

Great job on those upgrades. Did you do an interlock of the remote start to verify your in neutral?

Flash66

Thanks so much Dave! Absolutely. If the car is in gear the remote start is disabled. I also converted the defrost switch into a remote interlock switch. I need to buy one of your led panels to compliment the dash.

That's badass. Everything is very nicely done.

Is the backup camera wireless? If so, how bad is the delay?

Flash66
04-14-2015, 07:14 PM
Thanks Accipiter! I tried my best not to butcher the car in the process. The backup cam is great. Very little delay at all after it loads. It's wifi so a much stronger signal and more bandwidth than Bluetooth.

I'll upload more video of capabilities and things that didn't make it into this video like multitasking all apps at once on the screen Tesla style and the car control system that's on my iPhone, usable on the ipad. When you turn the ignition key I also have a neat DMC splash logo that comes on as well as powering off, the car says "Driving session is completed, have a pleasant day, or evening" depending on the time of day.

Here's a night video testing the speedometer done a couple of months ago. If anyone is curious, when power is applied by turning on or remotely starting the car all of the devices come on at the same time, bypassing the lock screen and open to their pre-programmed apps without having to click on anything.

Flash66

Thanks! I'd guess around 3k plus a lot of time. It's an iPad mini. If I decide to control the water valve, mode switch, fan switch with servos, vacuum solenoids, and microprocessor, I'll mount a full size ipad in portrait setting and ditch the old A/C control panel.

Amazingly done - you and Patrick have taken the DeLorean into the 21st Century with a lot of class. Would you be willing to share parts, apps, etc - how you did it all to get where you're at currently?

I've been thinking of the same thing, but integrating a b-Stem (http://braincorporation.com) that has built-in gesture control as well as the ability to learn and remember.

Not at all from the LCD, but the LED 7 segment tach has a slight double image. it's really not bad at all. I could correct it with a piece of film but it's virtually unnoticeable.

Great! Yes, I had been consulting with Brain doing UX and UI work. and had started a pet project with the Home Animator team - essentially Home Animator was designed to make your automated home more autonomous - using gestures for actions vs. your phone or other mobile device, and the system remembering what you did, so the next time you did something, it would do some sort of action in return. Unencumbered interaction. So being the UX guy, I thought about how your home and car could talk to each other, and the home would tell the car to start up and get all nice and warm on a cold morning, and the car would recognize you (specifically you) approaching and open the doors for you. Of course I had in mind a DeLorean for my story using Wings-aloft all for the cool factor.

I wrote a whole "Day in the Life" scenario for them, but they decided to go with an autonomous industrial floor cleaner.
Sexy....

Those are some awesome updates and I love the HUD. Personally, I find the ipad to be out of place, but then again so do most modern head units. By the way, where did you find those headlights?

Thanks for the compliment. :) the iPad does change the look of the original concept, but that's what I was going for. I really don't care for the look of modern head units, and the units that have CarPlay (which is very limited btw) have a tiny screen and no where as useful as the full capabilities the ipad can provide. Talk about modern? I made a FaceTime call from the cars dash today in traffic and it reminded me of the futuristic movie Demolition Man. I forgot all about it having that feature. For the headlights, I have the vendors contact somewhere. I'll find it and post. Patrick C had the same style headlight although his were Halogen. After seeing mine in HID he converted his over. I will tell you that we had a time making these work. For me, besides bucket modification we both had to run new 10G wiring the length of the car, up through the harness routed by the washer bottle to provide adequate power and a complex relay system to make them operate correctly. I'm pretty sure I have some notes on how it's done.

LOL! Turn the car into a Canolli! It's on a data plan and also it's purposely a GSM ipad so it has a gps chip. The wifi model doesn't have gps. Although I can use the personal hot spot from my iPhone and forgo the data plan. But still need the GSM model for directions etc.

I think what you have done is pretty great. I would like to implement some very similar things into my car when the time comes. I like the ipad there and moving the vents is a cool idea too IMO. I bet most everyone here would be very interested in some of the details of the many projects you have done to your car. I am sure you could start a dozen different threads with each mod. Explaining it might be just as much time as doing the work but if you have time to write it out, we would take the time to read it. Good work and thank you for sharing.

On a different note...

Every time I hear of people adding extensive electronics and automation to their cars and homes I always think of this scene.

Thanks! I have quite a few things documented with photos including modifying the AC vents. I'm making schematics and a .pdf to overview and repair as well as backup software and utilities to restore on a jump drive and Dropbox. I may sell the car someday and the new owner would be lost without this. I doubt I'd ever sell it, but it's always a good idea to document everything.

Nice work! I have some fairly elaborate modernization plans once I get the engine back in the car, although with a lot of custom software to do what I want to do. An iPad in the center console is something I intend mostly for the things I don't want to write myself, like Maps, music, etc. My A/C is leaking at the evaporator box, which means I'll be taking the entire dash apart anyway this summer, so it'll be a good time to start laying the groundwork for this. I also have halogen headlights at the moment, but I'm pretty interesting in doing the HID update you guys have done as well at some point.

Also, I'm pretty curious about where you got a Jarvis voice from. Googling a bit found a way to replace a few pre-recorded phrases, but I couldn't find anything about replacing the entire Siri voice with a Jarvis-like one. Yours seemed to be working in Maps as well. It didn't sound like the built-in UK voice to me, but I may have just misheard it.

Great work!!

I love the fact that you added the remote start. I've never seen someone add remote start to a DeLorean with a manual transmission before.

I have to ask, do you have a lockout or anything that will prevent the car from trying to start if it is in gear? I have been wanting to add remote start to my car for a while now but my biggest fear is that I'll forget that I left it in gear after parking and the car will take off when it goes to start. I know some people only rely on the parking brake, but the house I grew up in was on a hill and had a sloped driveway so it's ingrained in me to leave my cars in gear. If you have a mitigation for that I am DEFINITELY interested!! :D

If my car is any indication, it shouldn't be that difficult. My DeLorean is the only manual car I've ever owned (and I've owned several) where I didn't need to depress the clutch to start the car.

Thing is, I've never really looked into whether my car IS the indication. Is this normal for our cars, or is mine some kind of bastard oddball?

Thanks Joel! I'm going to gather all of my data and post a how-to thread for the HID and the 4-Hi system in the next week or two. For the Jarvis voice, I had to make some of the files myself. It also tells me all notifications in the same voice, for incoming message, mail, call, and alerts. I'm also going to add a "Welcome back sir" to the ignition on sequence. The "Hey Siri" to invoke voice commands used to be "Jarvis" but IOS 8 killed that for me.

No theyre all like that. There is nothing to keep you from starting in gear.

This got covered early on:

Just saw that. So there is a switch in the car that the driver has to leave in the "ok" position for the remote start to work? Am I reading that correctly? Or is there something that senses that the transmission is in neutral and not in gear? Either option would be cool, I'm just curious.

My 2000 Saab 5speed can be started in gear, so it's not just D's

What's more, in the saab, you can't remove the key from the ignition unless the transmission is in reverse. So remote start would be a bit of a challenge ;)

Hey Dangermouse, Man I knew there was someone I was forgetting when I was thanking everyone. You were a huge help with so much information when I was restoring the AC in my D. Thank you very much!

As stated above the DeLorean does not have a clutch safety switch. Neither did my old 86 Kawasaki Ninja 600 25 years ago. Let me tell you how awesome it was (not) standing beside the bike trying to be cool by starting the bike while ending my Mack daddy conversation with a girl. I said goodbye to her and to my surprise the bike at the same time. True story.

So to prevent any chance of reliving that ridiculous moment,

I now have a small slightly modified lever micro switch mounted under my shift plate that the shift lever engages when in 2nd gear. It uses the "Hood Open" pin on the Viper which disengages remote start. Neutral detection is not so easy. I'm kicking that idea around in my head still. So for now, I have to consciously remember to leave it in 2nd when I need to. I also wired the defrost switch to the same pin as a backup. If it's in gear I flip it on as well. 😜

I would guess it to be tricky to make a reliable neutral safety switch. I would probably try doing an LED photo transistor (block light) arrangement mounted on the transmission. Levers would block the light.

I have gotten into the habit of checking for neutral (moving shifter side to side) before starting. I don't step on the clutch when starting.

I had this happen only once while parked in the desert in Vegas. iOS shows a temp limit that went away as soon as I turned on the AC. The stock vents are right behind the ipad with aluminum tape over them which cool it right down if this happens.
