glove box lid replace the top pad possible?

I am wondering if you can replace the top upholstered pad on the glove box lid? looks like it is riveted on somehow to the metal base?.I would really like to keep the metal base and replace the pad due to a crack in it.

I replaced my upper surface with leather. It was very difficult to get right (3 attempts) as the clearance around the edges are very close. Get these wrong and the for sticks, to write and there's a large gap. To separate take out the rivets and if I remember correctly a clip around the catch mechanism.

Ok so it is possible...My reasoning is if the metal part has signitures i can keep it and fix the top pad.
