View Full Version : Electrical Power mirror switch crossover

I vaguely remember a thread on this subject on the old site. My mirror switch ended up not surviving its rebuild and I've now lost a ball bearing and a "dumbell" that make electrical connections.

Has anyone found a good enough crossover? I would actually prefer a crossover to an original one, but I suppose I should also consider somebody's used one if such exists.....
Thanks.

I believe that the PO on my car put in a volvo mirror switch that works pretty well. Unfortunately I don't know more than that it was a Volvo switch :/

Well I'm confused.... Thread title says window switch but you talk about mirror switch. If you do indeed need a mirror switch cross there is a good write-up here:

I was just thinking about that as well!! I remember on the old it was mentioned that a Saab switch was used,

Nice find guys. Do you know if the Saab switch is physically the right size?

Also - I have a mirror switch totally disassembled - but can't get it back together. The ball bearings are easy to lose, but they are easily replaced - I found the right ones in an old BMW window switch a buddy of mine had laying around (no idea which year - sorry).

Does anyone know how to get the switch back together? Its kind of like defusing a bomb in reverse.

It is smaller. You carve out a blank used on the passenger's side door. Here is how the Saab switch looks before:

Depends how far you've taken it apart I guess. I use a product called "connector protector" which is a really thick sticky silicone grease. It helps massively having something to hold all those balls and bar-bells in place as you assemble it.

I'll video the next one I do.... ;)

I don't know what I was thinking when I titled that post, sorry. Everyone seems to have figured out the question was indeed about mirror switches.....
Looking at link now...

There are a bunch of these for sale on Ebay right now (ok, 1 less now that I've bought mine). Thanks for the quick help.

I've done this mod to my car. I'll have to post some pictures of the swich mounted in the passenger planking cap. I also did a bit of modification to the switch's wiring so it plugs into the car's harness.

My Saab switch arrived today and it's already installed. Since my original one was beyond repair (or should I say beyond its second repair), I used its top plate by dremmeling the opening to a rectangle shape and squeezing the new switch into place. I cut off the connector and the little copper connectors on our wiring and soldered the new switch to my short harness. Back in the car it went, nice and tight and fully functional.

I notice my mirrors sound like constipated sheep when I move them. The motors sound like they could use some good lubing. A quick check of my manual and I couldn't find any references to how to tear into them. Anyone done it? Can you actually get to any of the parts to lube them or are they sealed up?

They all sound like that.

Yes you can, I did it on one mirror. I got one of two motors functional after both failed, so a partial success.

You have to remove the glass. If it breaks it can be replaced with oem glass from DMC or with aftermarket convex mirrors.

Nissan 200SX or 240SX in the states - they fit very good. Physically they fit
exactly in the existing hole.

It has one problem though - you need to replace the connector and I think on one
or both mirrors two wires need to be swapped.

Not that hard.

When I come to the mirror switch in the next few days and it's beyond repair
I'll install this one and take some pics.

I have some spare switch parts if you want them to rebuild your switch.

I've tried doing that when my mirror glasses were out. The motors seem to be non-serviceable and all sealed up (good thing sitting outside in the weather). I do wish to be able to give them a proper grease-up, but then on a side note, I hardly chance the setting anyway being the only one to drive the car. I decided it is not worth the hassle.

My mirror switch is beyond repair, so I've managed to find one that will fit (Nissan, I think)
Looking for any info for wiring. I have the Delorean wiring diagram, so know that side, but how do I identify the wiring on the new switch so I can change plugs.

Probably a really silly question since I'm sure I already know the answer, but are the D's mirrors supposed to move L+R as well as U+D? I imagine so, but I've noticed neither of my mirrors will move side to side. I suspect the switch is bad.

Nevermind, it was a silly question.

Here's one that's a little less silly - I've got the switch pulled from the door. On the harness, which contacts should I be able to touch together to move the mirrors left+right? Now that I have it pulled from the door, I'd like to see if it's a problem with the switch or something else.

Here's a new switch that we'll be offering early next year. Not sure if we'll offer it with the harness as shown here or if you'll have to transfer it over.

Bummer. I just bought the Saab switch to do the hack. This would have saved me the trouble since I wasn't looking forward to butchering up a blanking cap.

It does look like the Saab switch is the source part you're using on the new builds anyway, though. Any chance I can send you the Saab switch as a credit toward the plug-and-play one you guys will soon be selling? :)

It does look like an Opel/Vauhall mirror switch as well.

Guys, I have been looking at the 2010 Camaro. Thinking about buying one, but not anytime soon! :-(

Check it out, the Camaro's power mirror switch is identical to the Saab's switch!!

Original mirror switch went out and I am trying to use the Saab switch mentioned in this thread. Has anyone done this recently and have a wiring diagram or pictures? The old switch has 8 wires, but the new Saab switch has only 7. Any help would be appreciated.

At this price I'm surprised you would mess with it. It's the same switch and someone at DMC went to the trouble of sourcing the right connectors, cutting up the insert etc. to make it a drop-in.

Thanks for the response Dave, but when I tried to order the switch, it was not available and you didn't know if or when it would be. Therefore, this was my next best option. I purchased a dummy plate with the switch, so I need to pursue. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have them in stock here. I recall from figuring it out that one of the connections is shared .

My mirror switch doesn't do anything. Is there a way to test if it's the motors in the rear view mirrors, or if it is the switch itself? If the motors are bad, is there a way to replace just the motors or do you have to replace the whole mirror assy?

Unplug the mirror switch, take a jumper from the light green wire to the violet wire. Then, another jumper from black (ground) to dark green wire. Your driver side mirror should move in up motion. If mirrors work, the motor is obviously not the problem. To test the passenger side motor, put light green (power) with red and black (ground) with blue.

Can someone please post a pic of the new switch wiring? I thought I swapped over everything correctly but when I tried it, I promptly blew a fuse (the car, not me). Here's what I tried:

Anyone have any info on this? I had to swap over the new wiring into the old connector and the wiring isn't exactly the same.

Here is the switches explained:

Stock switch:
positive: light green
negative: black
WhiteBrown switches polarity Left and Right
WhitePurple switches polarity Up and Down
WhiteGreen: Left Mirror Up Down
White: Left Mirror Side Side
WhiteBlue: Right Up DOWN
WhiteRed: RIGHT Side Side

GM switch:
yellow: positive
black: negative:
blue: common across left and right (switches polarity)
green: left mirror up down
White: Left Mirror Side Side
Purple: right up down
Red: Right Side Side

The GM blue wire needs to be connected to two pins.

I made my own custom switch, explained here: http://www.16908.info/?p=2560

So here's what we need for the new power mirror switch wiring. A schematic was provided to me from DMC CA (thanks Danny) but there's some obvious DMCMW markings on it, too. Thanks Dave!

I'll also post it in schematics.

Getting the DARK green and LIGHT green wiring swapped around is where I went wrong.
