Exhaust bracket decided to break while driving along a motorway at 70mph. Why the hell do these things never happen when you've popped down to the local shop for a pint of milk, but always when you're a hundred miles away from home?
I heard it rubbing against the alternator fan wheel and wondered what the hell the noise was.

My blower motor has also stopped working and the clutch bearing has started squealing.

Bit of a crap evening, all in all.

The exhaust bracket is a known failure part because of the way it was made. It can be repaired or you can buy an improved one. As for the other failures, it is an old car, it is just a coincidence all of them happened simultaneously.

Update:
Bracket has been welded and reinforced. Also discovered the blower motor itself is kaput. And it's been in there less than six months. Grrr!!!!

Hi Martin,

Thanks for sharing your unfortunate experiences. I hope you get them sorted out.

When reading about your upper muffler bracket failure, I decided to check my own, as my exhaust is off the car.

Lo and behold, there is a hairline crack at the top bend.....

I wouldn't have noticed it without you having shared your story, but now I can fix the problem before I install the exhaust.

Mine had the same hairline crack. I have access to a TIG welder at my work, I just welded it up. It held just fine for several years until I removed it for a modified Stage 1 exhaust installation. I no longer use the bracket because it is redundant for my application.

To add to the fun, my exhaust just had the exact same bracket snap in the exact same place. Fortunately I was 20 miles from home at the end of my 850 mile road trip, rather than just starting out!

Wow, that's a long trip! Where did you go?

My wife and I did a mad-dash trip from London to Edinburgh to see Back to the Future live in concert at the Albert Hall. We had bought the tickets earlier in the year but then been unable to get time off to make a long-weekend out of it. None of our friends were able to make use of the tickets in our place, so we figured we'd do a 48-hour road trip there and back with a few stops on the way to see friends (and get my A/C fixed!).

Only casualties were the exhaust hanger and my fuel pump, that now sounds like a dying Giraffe even when starting from cold.
