dmc seat cover flaps

So getting close to wrapping up one of the seats, redoing them after an upholsterer did a complete hack job. Anyway ran into a roadblock. Proper placements/installation of flaps. Any advice?

Interesting...........I don't remember any flaps like that on some DMCH covers I helped install. If the angle of the picture is showing the inside of the seat, I don't think there is any need for a flap as the metal etc. is hidden from view. Outside has the seat adjuster so a flap would appear to get in the way. I went out to inspect my OEM seats and I see no evidence of a flap.

Thanks for the reply. Its the outside of the seat, the back rest. Very bottom on the side. Problem is I have the bit of foam exposed. I'm trying to figure out if those flaps some how tuck up to cover that foam.

The original leather had them as well. Does anyone have the slip me some skin article? Does it address this?

If I recall... The side needs to pull down to cover that exposed foam. The flap tucks between the foam and the metal "hinge" bracket, if you follow me. It is then hog ring tied underneath somewhere.

I would tuck them up and cover the foam. Don't worry about hog ringing them, they aren't going anywhere. Worst case you could always trim the foam down/out.

I had the same situation; I recall scratching my head a bit wondering what to do with it even though I had an example to follow. I don't recall exactly what I did with that flap, but I remember having more foam exposed that I expected (almost like the sides of the new cover was too short....just like the pic in your 1st post.) I tried to emulate as much as possible the OEM seat cover by tucking, pulling & hog-ringing that flap.

I took several pics when I recovered my seats, here's a few before shots that show the flap:

I'm installing my DMCH seat covers, and have read this thread and how it differs from the "Slip Me Some Skin" instructions. I have a question on the bottom rear flaps.

Basically, do you leave them folded as they are sewn and therefore they just get folded over the frame tube like so...

If so, there would be foam showing....or do you custom cut the flap around the frame tube? The rear area of the flap that is sewn to the back rib interferes with it when you attempt to open the flap and try to use it in a different way.

Found the pics. I don't think I took any bottom pics of the the area you mention on the replacement (only the seat back,) but I did take some of the OEM seat bottom as I disassembled it. I found some pics that show the flap is trimmed & tucked under (similar to your 2nd pic,) so I'm sure I copied what I saw on the original but I don't recall having any foam showing when I was done.

As an aside, I you look closely, my bottom seat covers have the 2" plastic ribbing instead of reusing the wire rib. I installed the ribs as described in this thread: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?9823-How-To-Installing-DMCH-Leather-Seat-Covers-some-thoughts , but where there were 3 holes in them as well, I also used the SS washer and zip ties. I figure it will help anchor the plastic ribs down and fill in the holes that would otherwise be in the bottom of the seat.

So, in the end, I didn't have to cut the flaps. The foam was showing because the leather wasn't pulled in place yet. I just had to roll the flap slightly to cover the foam, like so...

Thanks! I don't have them all finished and installed yet. This first bottom cushion was my learning experience. It took me all day! I'm hoping that the rest go faster.

Yeah, this cushion was the worst, and I'm pleased at how it turned out. These new seat covers will make such a difference in the interior. :wrenchin:
