I was at a tech session helping an owner with his fan fail unit. It turned out his blue socket was broken off (the side rail on the socket) and one of the socket pins had melted in the socket. If I had an extra socket I would have just cut the wires, crimped on new pins and installed the socket.

So on my last electronic parts order I added 10 sockets. Part number 1-1904045-2

These are black and do slide onto the OEM sockets but are a little longer than OEM. I kind of like them better since it has the relay moved a little further from the mounting screw. These also have a stop on the end of the slides so the sockets will not slide out which are not screwed to the metal plate.

Anyway, I cleaned one with solvent and then spayed it blue with rustoleum paint and the paint seems to stick pretty good to the plastic. I've seen others asking for a blue relay socket.

Very nice Dave! I just recieved your fan fail relay again and will install it tomorrkw. Ill let you know how it goes as well as I will inspect all my wiring. Did a 4 hour cruise tonight with normal fan fail with no issues

If you do paint a socket, just paint the front and top. Was a little harder sliding the sockets together when I painted the slides.

Some guy with OCD modified my relay bank. Cut off the slides on the end sockets, the unused mounting holes are gone and the fan fail has a little milled area to clear where the metal bracket is double metal.

Do you mean CDO? If you have it, all the letters MUST be in alphabetical order.... :rolleyes1:

I take it back on that part number I posted. The side slides are larger so they are not compatible with the OEM "RISTS" sockets. When I checked it the first time I just slid a socket onto the old one which worked but that only tested one side. The other side won't slide onto the OEM socket.

The high current (70 amp relays) are not the same as standard (30 amp) relays. There are larger pins on the high current units.

If you are just planning on wiring a loose relay socket there are many choices. But if you want a socket to slide onto your existing fan relay socket you need the correct one. Someone posted a source for those sockets but they are only available in black. I have a bunch of them since I replaced all my relay sockets. The blue one went quickly so I only have black, white and yellow. If you can not find the correct socket I will sell you one of mine.

By the way, you can paint the sockets. I painted one of my new ones blue and the fan relay socket brown. The dome unit socket was painted white.

I think 50% of the fan fail sockets have heat damage showing. Mostly on the pin that feeds the power from the fan relay since that pin carries the current of both fans.

Thanks Dave. Thought I had the correct one. You are absolutely correct where the burn on the socket is located. While I think I could attempt to use the socket again, I'm a little OCD myself and might as well just replace it.

That looks like the correct socket. You can probably pull the other pins from the old one and reuse. The melted one is the one I send the jumper for anyway so you can just cut that wire.

What would be the consequences of a mounting screw touching the metallic outside surface of a relay while it is in the socket tray and the car is running?

The one I specifically had in mind is relay #31, the lambda relay. This location is directly in front of a mounting screw on the upper, shorter socket tray. What kind of grief would the car, or that system (the lambda system in this case), see if that relay got "grounded" by resting on that screw head?

The metal case relays do not have the case connected to any electrical pins (normally). Also in stock configuration, I don't think the metal plate is connected to ground.

But I remember one person had a faulty AUX relay that connected a power pin to it's metal case.
