View Full Version : Engine Building a very quiet exhaust system?

About four years ago I replaced my failing stock stock exhaust with a DPI SPEC I exhaust. While it's a great free-flowing unit, it's too loud for my taste -- in fact, even the stock exhaust is too loud for me. I'm completely willing to trade power for quietness here.

I'd like to come up with a way to make the car REALLY quiet, like no louder than most consumer cars on the road that you barely even hear most of the time. The 2.8L engine was used in a Volvo that I imagine wasn't very loud, after all, and the 3.0L Monaco/Premier engine I'm installing now was also used in a sedan, so in principle it must be possible.

However, those cars had their engines in the front. With the DMC's rear engine design, I expect that the extremely limited space available to manipulate the exhaust gases makes getting down to that level likely impossible to achieve. But I'm certainly willing to give it a try.

I know relatively little about exhausts beyond what my Googling has provided. I understand that reducing noise will likely reduce power, but I'm OK with that if I don't bother my neighbors every time I drive down the street, and don't have to wear hearing protection when I'm working on the engine, and can actually have a conversation without yelling at freeway speeds (road noise notwithstanding). I'm fine with installing a reverse flow muffler if that will significantly dampen the noise, even with the loss of power that will cause. I also understand that different cats can affect noise (I think), as can installing different mufflers and adding resonators.

My first idea was to install silencers into the tailpipe of the SPEC I exhaust, until I realized that silencers are too long (8+ inches) to fit. I'm not really wild about packing fiberglass into the tailpipes either. I'd like a more engineered solution.

The best I've come up with so far (with my limited knowledge, as an off-the-cuff idea without proper research into feasibility) is two separate mufflers and resonators. The driver's side exhaust would cross behind the engine, from the DPI headers through the cat and resonator and into the muffler, and then out the passenger side tail pipe. The passenger side would do the inverse. The problem with my cunning plan is again space -- while this gives me a bit more distance for each pipe to control the exhaust gases, I don't know if I can get a resonator and a muffler combination that will actually fit in the few feet available from one side of the engine to the opposite tailpipe, or at least not anything big enough to control the noise adequately.

Googling usually finds people trying to make their car louder, so I've found it tough to find information about how to proceed. I was wondering if anyone more knowledgable had any thoughts about how to build a very quiet exhaust in the constrained space provided by the DeLorean.

One thing that came to my mind when I read your post was "what makes the car or exhaust system loud in the first place?"

I would think that a well maintained and in good condition car, with the stock set-up, could be quite quiet. Just like a very underwhelming, everyday car or minivan can be quite loud if it is in poor shape.

Loud cars/exhausts for me come from:

- exhaust manifold gasket leaks or problems.
- transmissions out of tune or not shifting soon enough and rev'ing the engine higher than necessary (as much a driver problem as it is a car problem).
- other holes or problem areas in the muffler, catalytic convertor or piping connections that leads to exhaust not getting out through the mufflers and exhaust tips.
- not distinctly an exhaust noise, but if brackets and fasteners aren't in place or tight, rattles can translate to extra noise.
- fuel mixture, valve timing, spark plug condition, etc. and overall engine tune-up stuff.

I would say generally that if it's running in well oiled condition, it'll default to being pretty quiet.

Have you met up with other owners to get a feel or listen to their cars and how loud or quiet they are?

We can chamber/pack a spec I muffler to the point of engine suffocation if you want. Save you some time on changing everything up.

The reason I replaced my exhaust four years ago in the first place was because the exhaust studs had broken (it was REALLY loud then) and the stock one exhaust was in poor shape. I reconditioned the entire top of the engine and put on the SPEC I exhaust. Unfortunately, around a thousand miles later I found hole in the block, so I'm in the process of putting a 3.0L engine in the car.

While doing the overhaul of the top of the 2.8L engine, I had problems with the cats glowing red. After way too much searching, my friend and I finally traced it to a bent throttle arm, which was keeping the throttle plates from closing completely at idle. It is unclear to me how much damage was done to the cats at that point, or how the cats contribute to noise. I do know my dad and wife thought the car was obscenely loud, and when I was driving it around the block they could hear it the entire time. I've even cut my engine and coasted into my driveway when I got home to avoid bothering the neighbors too much.

So, first question: How much noise would damaged cats be adding to the system?

Since I'm still putting the car back together, I don't have dB readings for the exhaust just now. I have new gaskets and everything, and rebuilt the top of the new engine as well, so the seals should all be good when I finally get to turn the key (probably in September or October at the rate I'm going).

Other notes:
- Automatic transmission here, which should be working properly...
- SPEC I headers, pipes and muffler are in good condition (only a thousand miles on them before I found that hole in the block).
- Fuel/ignition system will be controlled though a MegaSquirt with the 3.0L engine.

The SPEC I was definitely louder than stock when I put it on, but (in retrospect, once I realized what "free flowing" meant in contexts besides just power) that is to be expected

I don't think the noise from my car is that unusual for a DeLorean. I haven't met other owners in a number of years, and it's been at least five years since I've been to a vendor, so I'm afraid I don't have much of a reference. It's hard to get an idea of loudness from videos on YouTube, for example, since it's all mitigated by the recording hardware and my computer speakers, and unless someone is talking in the video you don't have another sound source to use as reference. I think this is the same problem we're having here -- the stock sound from the car may be "loud" to me, but acceptable to someone else, as it is hard to talk about something subjective like this without being able to either hear it or attach decibel numbers to it.

I also understand that it's probably unrealistic to compare a 30 year old rear engine DeLorean to my front engine 2015 Subaru Outback for noise levels (for example). As of the last time I started it, though (which I admit is about 2 years ago now), I feel like my DeLorean is not quite as loud as my neighbor's new Harley with straight pipes, but it's up there.

Thanks Josh, I think I'll take you up on that. That will save me a LOT of effort; I should have thought to ping you about it sooner. I of course really want the "maximum power while being as quiet as possible", but I also realize that with an internal combustion engine that those are contradictory, so I'm willing to trade power for quiet. And I'm not ready to go to the ultimate extreme and put in an electric drive just yet. :)

I'm going to sw this week to QC frames before taking a long weekend in DC. I will pull the patterns from the archive and see what the current pack rating is. (essentially this is steel wool per sq inch/baffle) As long as you sign off on the risk of restriction we can do anything you want. We will cut your skin open, modify and test here. Seems like a fun project for kicks. Email details of your build and configuration engine wise so I can test fire it on the same here.
