While replacing dist. cap I unplugged thermister in valley of death. Was able to see thermister but not get it reconnected.Car idled at 2,300 RPM.I was able to jump thermister plug with a fused resistor wire car idled normal. Then moved on to replace accumulator for hard start problem. The new acc. was 2 inches shorter than old one but i figered this was just a parts update.Acc. went in fine but I could not stop a fuel leak.It is leaking where 90 degree fitting attaches to acc.I may need a new fitting. Anyhow the score is Delorean 2 bob 0 Have a good one,bob

The accumulator should be the same size. Got a pic?

Are you confusing the accumulator with the fuel filter? The accumulator is up inside the frame under the car near it's midpoint. The fuel filter is near the left rear wheel. All of the accumulators I have ever seen are all the same size unless somehow someone changed yours in the past with a different sized one.

I was thinking the same thing David. I'm hoping some pictures will clear this up:
Fuel Filter:
3652
Fuel Accumulator:
3653

I don't remember who said it first but:

It is not the filter,it is the accumulator. It may have been replaced at one point.I will get a picture up later with them side by side.Is that 90 degree fitting by acc. available? This D has a factory radio that does not work.Is the radio a problem area?Checked the fuses but did not pull radio as of yet.

Also, if you are able to, show a pic of your current installation

I'd start a separate thread for this.

Which radio do you have? The radios (either ones) typically work but the speakers rot and the Craig loses the front display. Check for power and ground. There are fuses under the console near the radio. As for the accumulator, I wasn't sure you confused them, the filter has 2 connections, the accumulator has 3. Do NOT damage the hard lines to the accumulator. You MUST hold back with a back-up wrench to avoid twisting the lines. To replace the lines you have to lift the body. You do not want to have to do that!

Didn't someone recently have the exact same problem and the problem was rectified with teflon tape? I'm probably thinking fuel filter there, but I'm just stirring the idea pot so to speak.

Yeah, that was a fuel filter issue. What has me concerned is the 2 inch size difference he is noticing between his two accumulators.

You definitely would not want an accumulator with less volume.

Hervey's new accumulator is about 2 inches shorter than stock. I believe this is what the OP is talking about. There should be no issue with fitment, it's still the same width. Newer design, I suppose.

Why is that?

Why is that?

My rest pressure holds for 3 hours. If the accumulator is half the volume it would hold for 1.5 hours.

Do you think it's better to have a recently manufactured accumulator with less capacity, or a 30 year old NOS unit that may or may not withstand modern fuel additives (ethanol)?

I opted to go new, if only to prevent possible trouble down the road.

I think the new one is the way to go. If you have warm start issues you can always set my RPM relay to add 3 hours of rest pressure time.

That's good, because I do intend on ordering one of those from you when I get to that point. Thanks for the info!

FYI:

My car would have the warm start issue at 3.5 hours every hot day I brought the car to work after lunch. That is the time I'm at work after lunch (I start early). It never had warm start issues at 3 hours (it held rest pressure that long) or at 4 hours or longer (engine cooled off by then). I'm not saying all engines will exhibit these timings and it depends where you live as to how fast your engine cools.

So I made the RPM relay run a half second on the hour for 3 hours after shut down. Have not had any warm start issues since (not counting that chipped PPR o-ring failure).
