View Full Version : Brake Parking brake cable routing - how to secure as it crosses underneath trans?

I've been under my car cleaning up some filth and came across something on my parking brake cable that didn't look right.

This would be the passenger side cable, going from the lever to the left of the driver, back to the right rear wheel. It crosses under the trans (automatic in my case) and I am wondering how it was intended to be secured there?

Here are a couple pictures from some other car showing the spot:

See how it isn't really attached to anything at the centreline of the trans? Yet there appears to be a little clip or "L" bracket in that one bolt and maybe it was supposed to have an opposing end on the outside of the cable to hold it in place from rattling or moving around?

My car has what looks like a small pad of some kind, maybe one inch wide, and wrapped one full turn around the circumference of the cable. And it's held in place with a zip tie. But it isn't holding anything to it nor being used to hold the parking brake cable to the underside of the engine. And I can slide it up or back the cable freely too. I had always seen this spot as it ends up being a low point for drips, but now that I'm under there cleaning and seeing it better, it doesn't look like it has a function.

Here's a couple of my car from a season or two ago:

Any ideas? What do you see that I am missing or is there that shouldn't be? Anyone know what the story is on that L bracket looking part? Mine isn't oriented the same way as on this other car. Do you know what parts diagram/page it is on?

http://store.delorean.com/p-7148-edge-clip.aspx is the part you are missing but they fall off. A couple of well -placed zip ties works about as well.

If you want to test it before you place such a massive order (:thankyou:) there is one inside each door at the rear holding the wiring harness in place. You remove the upper door panel to get to it.

That makes sense. I was in my doors not long ago for window work and remember those clips. I can see how they would hold on to the cable and then pinch that flat part of the little L bracket there to hold it in place.

If you don't want to that style clip, the manuals used the J-clip style like what you see on top of the engine holding the wire loom to the passenger valve cover. It just bolts up to one of the end cover bolts. On the automatic you could put it under the head of a pan bolt using a small washer as a spacer to clear the lip of the pan.

Thanks for the suggestion/alternative. I am taking my sweet time doing my little cleaning job 'cause this is doubling as me taking a wee break from the car... err, I mean taking a break from the people you encounter with the car that is. Might see about MacGuyver'ing a zip tie or two initially to hold it in place.
