Been checking more stuff out on my car. Was looking to see if the hood release cable was ok. It wasn't. I could see some fraying in a similar spot that I had before.
I have a back-up cable that is the inner hood release cable sans sheath. I grabbed a bike cable locally for the replacement main cable.
The problem one came out ok and the new one went in ok. I was under the footwell tightening things up and checking the alignment/travel pathway for the cable in the lever to see why it was getting rubbed and frayed.
Turns out the cable was secured to the screw and nut in a way I don't think was quite right. Mine had the cable pinched under a washer that was tightened in place by the screw and nut. The parts diagram shows something else.

On the parts diagram, this is #62. There are two entries for #62, however, as one is the lever only and one is the lever plus the screw and nut (I think from the thumbnail).
What I did not realize on my own car is that this screw has a hole in it! I had taken it right out thinking I would put a new, not rusty one in and only then did I see the hole. So I figure the hole is there to feed the cable through and then when you tighten the nut on the other side, it pinches the cable in place between the bottom of the top of the screw and the edge of the hole in the lever that this screw is going through.
Sound about right? After getting it put back together the way I think it is supposed to be, it looks like it is travelling straight in and straight out instead of the way it was where it was pulling down against the edge of the cable sheath threaded part that gets secured into the bracket. The end of this threaded part is sharp enough to, over time, tear into the cable itself.
Just thought I would share in case anyone else out there finds a PO assembly job similar to this dumb dumb one.
