After moving to CO from PA, I have been enjoying driving the DeLorean with everything working - and I mean everything. But now I am having a problem with the windows. Hit the switch for them to go down and no issues. Now the problem. Hit the switch to go up and nothing for 10 seconds or after hitting the switch a number of times (not sure which gets it to work). I would think it was the switch but it happens exactly the same for both. The fuse is OK and I don't think there is any thing else to check but wiring. One of the window motors is new and on is the original.

Any idea?

Thanks

Anything else with your car worth mentioning? Recent work on the car? Things replaced or taken apart?

Did you need to get some sort of safety done or inspection when moving states? (and a mechanic was doing things to your car even if it was just checking stuff).

That intermittently working windows thing with my car turned out to be the switches going bad. Yours both doing it at the same time might be a coincidence or it might mean the problem is something else. I'd suggest swapping in a known good one, but that doesn't sound possible for you with both being problematic.

Did you use both windows the same amount while in PA? Maybe they were already going flaky back in PA but moving to CO makes you use them more (A/C off and windows open?).

Nobody has done anything to the car but me recently. Well I did get new tires. The other thing is the fuse #11 blew for the lights - doors, dome, trunk, engine compartment.

Did you figure out why the fuse #11 blew? Sounds like a short somewhere that might have caused that. Door light shorts could be from some critter calling the inside of your door home. Any chance your car sat and had some unwanted guests? (like when it was being moved to the new state, or sat before or after).

Haven't figured out why the fuse blew and really no chance of people or critters. I need to do that first then see about the windows. Maybe this weekend.

Well I figured out that the engine compartment light switch was bad causing the fuse to pop. Don't think that has anything to do with the up switch for the windows.

Fuse 11: Radio clock, gear selector lamp, A/C panel lights, and power windows.
Fuse 12: Diagnostic plug, engine compartment lamp, luggage lamp, glove box lamp, door lamps, and interior delay unit.

There are only really three or four failure points in the circuit:

The fuse that feeds it
The switches
The connectors in the roof
The connectors at the motor
The motor

Lack of one direction can only be the switche as the wiring is used the same for both directions by reversing the voltage to the motor.

I figured it was the switches. It's just that both are doing the same thing and happened at the same time. Before I order two new ones, I am going to run the windows by by-passing the switches and use the wiring only. Any way I can burn anything up if I just run them up/down a little?

+1

I agree, but since he mentioned bumping it a few times to go up, I'm wondering about it being harder to lift than drop and if he might be clearing a bind?? Still weird both sides at same time even for weak motors.
Swapping the slate colored wires should tell the whole story...

If you connect things wrong at best you blow a fuse and at worst you'll melt wiring/connectors.

It is not that uncommon for both switches to act up on a given car as both are subjected to the same conditions (Humidity, use or lack of, debris, wear & tear etc.). If you wish to retain the original switches I can rebuild them for you or you can attempt it yourself but it is a little tricky to reassemble them and almost impossible to explain clearly.

I think I will replace the switches come this winter as one of many car projects.

Rob:
After the season I will be getting a hold of you to rebuild the switches. I would like the original look as they are faded and they don't need to be standing out.
