View Full Version : Mod for the throttle body intake
NEW THROTTLE PLATE; Performance replacement part of the rubber intake gasket 102772 (GSKT-LWR HSG/T/V).
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION;
This new throttle spacer plate is designed to increase air flow to the K-jet air intake throttle body.

I have been working on a new design to replace the rubber part with an aluminum one. It's primarily designed to open up the throttle assembly and increase air flow.
Basically in the original OEM design, there is a restrictive rubber fitting between the metering intake and the butterfly assembly. My new plates interior profile matches the throttle butterfly assembly profile with no air restrictions. Thus delivering more air to the butterfly assembly. This is especially benifical if you have a cold air intake. Why increase air flow only to have the stock fitting restrict it again. This part fixes that.

I have been testing one on my car for some time. The plates are going into production soon and be offered for sale.

What is your price point on this? I'd like to see dyno numbers as well, I'm sure some flow increase could be noted. Being a turbo owner, ill bet this would make a difference....
When I was restoring my D. I pulled the motor to clean it up and restore. I like to modify my car to improve performance where I can. I figured something had to be done about the OEM rubber gasket. There are throttle plates for other cars but not for our Deloreans. So I drew up some drawings on my CADD system and started to check into machinists. It's been a long process between finding the right machine shop, revisions and prototypes to get to this point.
Like most modifications to improve performance its the sum of the parts that make a difference. I don't think my throttle plate alone will make much power. But with a cold air intake tube and a high flow filter, things start to improve. Throw on other performance mods like exhaust systems or cams and you have even better performance.
On my car I have ported the intake and exhaust ports. Port matched the manifolds. Stock cams. I have a cat delete pipe. A cold air tube and performance filter and the throttle plate. (of course!) Its an automatic trans but even so I am pleased with the performance. It really starts pulling around 3500 rpm.
Just looking at my new throttle plate and the original rubber gasket you can clearly see that it will improve air flow especially at higher rpms. I don't have any dyno tests but I am sure that somebody will someday.

As for the price point it looks like they will be about $114 each. They will come with stainless button head fasteners, washers, and "O" ring seals. I am very pleased with the first couple of pre production parts. They are high quality machined aluminum.

Production is scheduled for the weekend of the 5th of September. The parts are made from a 12' long bar of aluminum that will yield about 37 plates. More batches will be made as demand increases.
I will wright up a new thread once they are in stock and ready to ship. I think the first batch will go pretty quickly as interest has been very high.

Another great mod is cutting those decelerator valves there off, and then soldering the holes back up. Their only purpose is to reduce emissions on sudden engine deceleration by preventing a rich condition when the butterflies snap shut. But if you modify your microswitch bracket to trigger your ISM earlier, you can initiate a gentle drop in the RPMs and render those valves redundant, and thus expendable.

It also keeps the engine from stalling on a sudden drop from high throttle. No personal experience but I know of one or two folks who did the mod and didn't like it. The correct setting for the throttle stops is pretty much what you described in any case.

My car always started to stall whenever I revved it high, and then let off the gas. It WOULD die if I had the A/C on. But once I fully extended the screw and bent the bracket up to trigger the Idle Circuit early, it would always float down gently. I managed to do this to two other cars too with the exact same results.
As for the mod itself, that one comes directly from John Lane.

I'm still running without the deceleration valves. I did some modifications to my idle ECU software but it still undershoots the set idle RPM sometimes. It never stalls but I may go back to using the deceleration valves. I did the test with my original throttle body which had bad deceleration springs so I still have a good throttle body.
Was there any noticeable difference in performance with the modified butterfly plates? I was thinking of doing this to my car along with splitting the shaft.

Not that I recall. How often do you drive around with the throttle wide open?

Every highway on-ramp; some stop lights :burnout:

I don't think you would notice the difference driving the car. Probably only see if it helps with a dyno test.
The advantage I was after was to see if the idle would be better since those valves could leak. I did not notice any improvement there also.

I suppose the same could be said for the subject of this thread itself...
If it's a thread about extracting as much power out of the stock intake wherever possible, every little bit helps. Though I would admit that the very first thing to do would be to adjust that linkage rod between the Throttle Spool and the Butterflies. If the Throttle doesn't even open all the way when the gas pedal is pressed to the floor, you're not even receiving all of the power the stock engine has to deliver.

We see quite a few cars where the throttles don't open all the way. Typically what happened is that sometime in the past 30 years water got in the cable and froze, and someone pressed the gas pedal bending the linkage.
The plates have arrived from the machinist and I have been packaging them up.

PM if you like.
There are only 38 available in this batch and interest has been high.
I plan on the official launch on Tuesday. I still have to wright up the new thread and I figured "what the h".

Posted a thread in the parts for sale category. Check out the new wright up.

any long term updates on this or dyno info? always looking for more power...
I've been driving with the spacer plate in my car for a while now. I'd say that my car is pretty quick. It seems to really pull strong above 3 grand. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, it's the cumulative benefit of several parts that really make a difference. Like the cold air intake tube, high flow filter, better exhaust, etc.... Basically our engines are like air pumps and anything to improve air flow will help. I know I am pitching my own product here, but I have spent thousands of dollars on my car just because it's a hobby. I love getting things to improve or enhance the car. Stuff I would not spend on my wife's mini van or my truck. Its just part of the joy of Delorean ownership.
Well that might be a bit strong I have cursed my car several times. Maybe not a woo hoo joy but more like "oh joy"

Hey Gary, i was refered by you by several others and if you have any, i'd like to purchase a throttle spacer. Anything to help the PRV would be great! I have the cold air intake and filter, bigger Stainless air box from Special T, DPI and Spec1 without cats. I bet it definitely will pull harder above 3000 RPM has more airflow getting sucked in will definitely make it accelerate a lot harder. Definitely looks like quality craftsmanship and it looks like a hell of a difference compared to the rubber spacer in between.

Life has been crazy. I have one left I can send you. Actually I think I have two or three prototypes and the one finished product remaining. I don't think I have any hardware for them (screws and washers). Shoot me a message if still interested.

Seems like I have one of these on #5637. Just noticed it last night as I was doing some other work and a bit of searching came up with this thread. It came with the car so I don't have any history.
