Binnacle stuck, advice on removal?

I've been trying to remove my binnacle however the last two nuts cannot be removed. The four 7mm nuts on the outside were no real trouble but the two 8mm above the steering column simply spin their studs and will never loosen. There doesn't appear to be any way to get a tool behind the studs and they feel flat on the other side anyway.

Anyone have any advice on how to remove these? Here is a picture for clarification. Also this project is to replace my broken upper speedometer cable, is it supposed to come out of the gauge and take a hard right like that? It looks like it should just run straight out through that big open slot and avoid a bend.

Most cars just have the 4 7mm nuts and that's it. Are you curtain those are physically attached to the binnacle or cluster housing?

The only other suggestion would be to remove the knee pads, then you should able to slip something under the front of the binnacle.

That bolt appears to be securing the dashboard, not the binnacle. The nut you are looking for is below that black bracket.

And you are correct, the speedo cable should be routed through that hole, not with a sharp right turn as pictured.

I don't think you need to remove those ones you are referencing. Hard to see for sure what you have there, but it should be free after the six smaller nuts are off.

And here are a couple pictures when I had my own off. I can't see on the underside of my binnacle where those larger nuts are, but looking at the dash picture with the binnacle removed, you might be trying to get those two in the centre off, which they do not need to be.

To answer your question about the cable taking a hard right turn, no, it shouldn't need to do that. You'll see better what is going on with your binnacle once removed, but generally speaking it shouldn't need to go left or right, only straight down to reach the service counter.

Jonathan I see a hole in the vertical lip of the fiberglass just Behind the black connector. Perhaps he has a screw on either side going into the binnacle . Mine doesn't but that doesn't mean it didn't at some point.

Thanks, all! That was extremely helpful. I couldn't see where those last two 7mm nuts were. I got it loose and figured out my speedometer problem. The cable was toast and I'll be getting rid of the service counter and using one long cable in its place.

Jonathan, the pictures are helpful. Sometimes reading directions while contorting oneself upside down makes it hard to place where everything is.
