Ken Kapalowski and I stopped by a rough-looking shop in New York state on the weekend to document the whereabouts of vin 17009. The shop owner's son was very reluctant to let us go near it and would not let us touch it so I didn't get great pics as it was kinda buried between other cars. But, here it is - a pretty sad '83 5 speed. Disregard the "For Sale" signs. We were told it's not for sale, but that the owner is planning on restoring it. However, he said it has sat here for 5 years with basically no progress. The windshield was cracked at the mirror and the seats have fuzzy covers on them. The dash looked pretty good. The louvres had the full-length brace down middle support. The epoxy on the frame was powdery. Not good.

Looks like someone couldn't figure out how to pull the engine without cutting the back of the frame off :gunfire:
I can only assume it was in an accident to cut the frame (bumper mount). But for it to be that bat, you would think the fiberglass, louvers, or back edges of the stainless would be goofed up.

It seems it would have been faster to separate body and frame than take the time to cut off that rear section to remove the engine.
Letting a car sit for years saying that you will restore it is utter BS. You either take action and make sure the car does not deteriorate any further, or you sell it. Letting it sit out in the open... :hmm:

Letting it sit out in the open... :hmm: Especially in NY - winter does a number on cars. Sad to see it sitting in that condition, hopefully it will be rescued sooner than later...

I know. It's nuts eh? The only work done, I think, was that the engine was pulled 5 years ago to have it rebuilt. ??? No idea where it is now.

Just north of Buffalo.
Would this be the same DeLorean today (according to the VIN) ? It's for sale on Ebay ...

What more info could you possibly want?
Yes, looks like it is the same car, but they have done a great job restoring it.

But wants 30K for it...:blackeye:
Also has a Craigslist ad with that price on it.
I wonder if he will mention to his buyer, where that came from.
Is it for D's as important to have "Matching numbers" as it is with Muscle cars?

If it was restored correctly then I'd think it would be better than a car sitting for 10 yrs all original. Looks from the pics like it was done well.
As for the matching #s, I've never heard much discussion on this for our cars. And who's to say that's not the original motor.
The only issue I have with the eBay listing is that the seller describes it as "All original" and as another member mentioned, there's not much information provided.

i believe Michael said it best in the "Matching Numbers" thread (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?7276-What-does-it-mean-when-a-a-classic-car-has-quot-matching-numbers-quot): "There is no or has there ever been a 'numbers matching' Delorean."

I mailed the 17009 owner (via his craigslist email) saying with gentle kindness that I found his car to be a previous salvage car.
That is what I got today, in response (I quote):
"You are a fucking ass hole. Never at junk yard"
... a very professional seller, isn't it?
:)

Actually, to complete your statement. You did not just mail him about that. You mailed him to make an offer and since you saw it at a salvage state, you were requesting some Information on the job done on it;)

That is correct. Am I too naive or is it possible that we are confusing the VIN? Maybe his car was really not the salvage car, and 17009 is a number that had been misread on the wrecked car...?
I don't know, I'm just trying to justify a so violent reaction, even though I think that words like that can't be reasonable at all.

I had that thought too. But upon an honest mistake the reply would have been: "I am afraid you have my car confused with another one"
Extremely angry reactions come from people with no temper or people who don't like being discovered.
Plus, to hand credit to the thread starter 2 years ago, I doubt any member in here with all that passion for Ds would "missread" a VIN

Same story, seen from another perspective:

I enjoyed the Steve Martin reference!
:D
So is this the same car or isn't it? Could be a wrong VIN on Ebay too ...

I definitely could not understand it in the end. The man mailed me again telling me that for sure there was a misunderstanding upon the VINs. Apologising for his overreaction.
As far as I am concerned, there are no evidences of this misreading, but anyway I don't care making business with this man anymore, he has been a bit too violent for my tastes.

Is it possible 17009 is a cloned car (swapped VIN plate)? I have 17099, and my understanding is that 17XXX were Canadian spec cars. The dash may have been swapped with a US Spec one, but the ebay ad looks like a US Spec car. To many inconsistencies to me....
Why doesn't the seller 'proof' it with a picture of the VIN tag?

I just ran across 17009 on Craigslist: http://cnj.craigslist.org/cto/4472748099.html
It's in New Jersey now and the owner is asking $23k.
There are a bunch of pics in the ad, but the written description couldn't be much shorter -- can anyone tell if this might be the same car discussed earlier in the thread?

Obviously it is the same car that was for sale last June - same pictures too.
There is no reason that it isn't the car Marty & Ken saw in 2011. Note that they found it at a repair shop, not a wreckers yard. I doubt that they screwed up the VIN. Looks like the engine had just been removed and is not re-installed (or a replacement) and the car made nice again - good looking job too. They are both 5 speeds with black interior, both have flat hoods with the logo on the front corner.

I'm the new owner of VIN 17009 and I can tell you that the car sitting in my garage is NOT the one that is in those photos. Picked it up from a guy in New Jersey who bought it new.
