Refurbish impact absorbers?

Hi There,

My front impact bumper (and to a lesser extent the rear one) has the black coating peeling off in a few areas. To refurb, do you scrape the peeling areas off and apply a rubberized paint? Any product suggestions, or other tips?

I refurbished mine, I just peeled it little by little until it was back to the original foam. I was extra lucky in that a rodent chewed several channels "helping" me out with the job. I filled those in with some foam crack sealer, trimmed it down and recoated it with rustolem leak seal rubber coating.

Remove all loose paint. A compressor with an air blower nozzle greatly assists in the removal process. Apply two or three spray on coats of black engine enamel. This penetrates and seals the pores to prevent absorbing water. If you leave them bare you effectively are riding around with two huge sponges under your facias that can drip water for days after a hard rain. I've gotten many calls from customers over the years complaining about mysterious water drips that, if not coming from the A/C evaporator, can inevitebly be linked to "The sponges". Rubberized paints like the original coating tend to peel off rather quickly. Anyone who removes their facias for painting should use the opportunity to seal the bumpers as well.

Although you won't see them when the fascia is installed if left like that, the sponge effect is what I anticipated would happen.

So, I refurbished my front impact absorber over the last few days by peeling all the old paint off it, cleaning it, and putting 3 coats of semi gloss engine enamel on it as recommended. Curiously, there was a center body mounting nut (101435), but no bolt or hole through the center hole in the absorber. Just 2 bolts holding it on the car. (I see that on the online store it says there are only two.) Not wanting the center mount to go to waste, I measured and drilled a third hole through the aluminum support of the absorber. Now there are 3 bolts.
