Hi, I have been looking at purchasing a Delorean. I ran across this one and it has a good size and deep dent in the hood. Has any one had something like this repaired? My guess is the back side of the hood would need to be taken off and rebonded to fix? I have worked with fiberglass and done some metal hand forming.

Thanks,
Jeff

Yes I would think it is fixable
By anyone, I would say no.

Depending on where it is you might not remove all of the fiberglass. You would either cut out a section or drill some holes, fix the S/S and then repair the fiberglass. If you are buying the car and making an offer, price what a hood will cost and make an offer accordingly. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace rather than to repair even if it is repairable.

That does looks repairable, but won't be cheap. The correct way to do it would be to cut out the rear section of the hood brace (maybe 4 to 5 inches) repair the steel, and then re glass/graft the area you cut out. Be aware, the entire hood will probably need to be regrained, and the hood already has the x outline in it. It may be cheaper if you are a perfectionist to source a good grooved hood with no x and sell this one. I would guess this ding repair to be somewhere close to 800 with all labor plus shipping....

You can faintly see the outline of the hood support through the stainless and luckily it looks like the dent is not on top of the X. Still a pain to get to, but at least you wouldnt have to drill through the X to push the dent out.

It looks to me like it actually is in the lower brace. IF that is the case, you would have to cut that area out, and probably have to dolly it out, then start to work it. Fortunately it's pretty easy to reglass the bottom of the hood.
If you're right though, and it's not in a brace that would make the repair easier. Pull the carpet off and there you are....

Don't do this. It's hard to ever get the hood structure back as good as it was, and invisible. Better to work through small holes in the fiberglass that can be filled.

It's a repairable dent - but don't "try it yourself" and then give up and expect someone else to finish it. Those are the hardest ones for us (or anyone who works stainless) to do, as once you've rebent the metal incorrectly it is stretched and work-hardened, making it much more difficult to get back into shape. It's much easier to repair it the first time than after a bad attempt.

Dave, this is why I suggested cutting the brace, because the metal is stretched and will probably need to be dollied first. In my experience with dents in the hood that deep, drilling a hole will result in the fiberglass ripping from the stress of the pushes. I don't recommend he cut the hood or repair it himself, but a pro should be able to regraft that area without an issue. I did a dent deeper than that a few years ago, and it had to have a block behind it to hammer it out first because it was borderline streched.
