View Full Version : Frame & Body Pontoon O-ring seal NLA - alternatives?

Hi there,
It looks like the pontoon foam O-Ring seal (106693) is no longer available. Mine are fairly crusty. What have you all used as a close looking alternative?
Thanks!

Great question. No idea. I haven't heard of any solutions.
IIRC, there are similar (perhaps identical) O-rings behind the rear stainless panels over the breather holes that are directly behind the rear speakers in earlier to mid build cars. If you really want, you could steal those and plug the body breather holes with old worn out dust caps. If those holes don't leak already they will at some point.

Hi Dave,
Correct. Here's a pic (before cleaning)..

So, it's only a partial ring on my car, which wouldn't do for the pontoon ring. When you say breather holes, is the purpose of that hole ito exhaust air out of the cabin? If so what happens if you plug them?

Many cars have the holes plugged. Their are enough other holes/leaks in the cabin that it does not really effect anything i.e. Driver compartment venting.

You can remove the "ring", cut it open and fill it with foam. Alternately you can get some square foam of the same size on a roll, cut it, paint it, and glue it in.

I suppose you could look at like. Wow, the vent louvres were supposed to be functional. Of coarse there's enough leakage between the quarter panel and pontoon that the louvre vents are just decorative elements.

I just used some foam with adhesive backing and stuck it on. It does the job. To me it did not matter if it looked original. The original stuff had deteriorated anyway.

When I repainted my engine bay I considered just using some foam weather stripping to fill the gap between the inlet and the flange that goes into the pontoon. Something like this... http://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-E-O-3-4-in-x-7-16-in-x-10-ft-Black-High-Density-Rubber-Foam-Weatherstrip-Tape-R734H/100047977
It's mostly aesthetic any way so I never got around to doing it.

Well, as Dennis mentioned, they're supposed to be functional. Plus, if I don't replace them, every time I open the engine louvre, it would bother the heck out of me. :headscratch:
Dana, what is the measured diameter of the hole?
Dennis
I'll get the exact measurements of the diameter, height, and width of these rings and report back. I can't believe that they haven't been reproduced....probably too far down on the list. I think the diameter is 2 3/4 inches but I need to verify.
Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going to get the dimensions and do some research.
Also, for the breather holes, I'm thinking of a circular louvre fitting that would exhaust the air but would not let water in that was traveling downward, or perhaps a one way valve similar to the one that is in breathing equipment. More research....

I'm fairly sure those foam rings are made from PVC foam. That stuff just turns to dust over time. If it were me, I'd use neoprene rubber foam or polyurethane foam and cut new rings. Then install with black RTV or weather strip adhesive.
Same goes for the rear upper pontoon vents.

The dimensions are about 3/4 " square. It appears to be a plastic covering filled with foam. The foam inside turns into dust. You can buy a roll of black insulation 3/4 X 3/4 and cut it to the proper length and glue the ends together. You can hide the joint where it can't be seen. It is mainly for aesthetic reasons to hide the joint between the trim and the pontoon.

I had the panel off today, and the O-rings are 1/2" wide, 1/2" thick, and the upper intake round holes are 2 3/4" (inside diameter). The lower vent holes are slightly smaller at 2 3/8" (inside diameter).
I was thinking of cutting a foam ring like Dennis mentioned and spraying/dipping it in plasti-dip.
What you you think?

The Plasti-Dip may be too thick. Maybe a thick coat of paint. Like a very thinned out undercoating.

Cool! I called a couple wrecker yards, and they didn't have any. :frown:
However I found the gasket that Dave mentioned. I trial fitted it on both holes and it looks like it will do the job! You can't even tell the difference from the original gasket on the upper hole. I'll post pictures when I permanently install the quarter panels.

So, I got the leak-prone cabin vent gasket replaced today with my own concoction that will let air out, but no water in. I used the tank to bowl rubber gasket that was recommended by Dave Swingle ( thanks Dave /Matt K!)...
38238
Old gasket removed and cleaned with Goo Gone and a razor blade. I trimmed the rectangular gasket above it, as it interfered with the top of the new gasket...
38239
Ace gasket #40198 glued, beveled side in, with Ultra Black RTV sealant. After it set up, I rimmed the gasket again with more....
38240
Finally, I cut a piece of 6 mil plastic and glued it 3/4 of the way around the face of the gasket with RTV to achieve the goal of a functioning yet water resistant vent.....
38241
Now on to the induction gasket. :wrenchin:

I cleaned and re-oriented the internal duct which fell out of place...
38260
I also cleaned the old glue off the flange, and installed it.
38261
I installed the same Ace part number 40198 ($2) beveled side up, using contact cement....

Hi Dennis,
Here's a view from the inlet. The bevel is visible. I tried it both ways and it fit better with the bevel up because of the angle of the inlet grill. I might mark and trim the inside diameter as there seems to be extra. I need to take the panel off one more time anyway.

The best substitute I have been able to come up with is a roll of 3/4 square weatherstripping at Lowes. I hide the seam around the back so you can't see it. It is about the right color and you can put it in without having to take everything apart. The other possibility is to take the old seal out, cut it open, clean out the old foam and put new foam in, gluing it shut. Now how do you takeout and put the seal back without taking the car apart?

Just a side note - what I like about this particular shape and size of ring is that it totally covers the area where the original gasket went. No matter what I did to try and clean the pontoon and tube, I could not restore it to my satisfaction. So this covers it and to my eye, looks like it might as well have come from the factory (though I know the originals looked a bit different).
The install, to answer the question in previous post, is very easy.
You DO NOT have to take anything apart.
Just clean the area, carefully slice the gasket with a blade so it can be expanded and put around the tube, then use adhesive to glue to the pontoon portion so it contours right to the pontoon shape. The cut side of the gasket should face into the corner where you would never see it.
There is room for improvement in terms of texture and exact shape, but again, hoping that Rob can improve on this so the community finally has a super strong replacement for this. I have always thought this is one of the worst looking parts of the engine area once the originals deteriorate.

I disagree. I managed to do it without having to take anything apart. Removing and replacing that panel is a LOT of work just for that foam seal, unless you have other reasons to remove it. And there are TWO of them!

You may be right. I think with the OEM rings you had to do it this way because they were unbroken circles. I already had my quarter panel off for other reasons and it was the perfect time to do this work. But you can probably get yourself under there if you try. There are certainly way more uncomfortable contortionist acts required for other jobs.

I tried to install the #106693 seals sold by deloreango; I thought they had to be installed like in kajcienski picture, around the air intake, but I found that the inner diameter of the seal is about 58mm and the outside diameter of the air intake is about 75mm (at least the driver side intake), so it seems that they are intended to be installed like in DMC-81 pics.
I find that the "seal pressed between air intake and pontoon" method looks like a little bit odd, I guess I could try to cut the seal and spread it around the intake, what's the general consensus on this installation? Thanks
David T
02-20-2019, 03:52 PM
If you are going to cut the seal you might just as well have bought some 3/4 square weatherstripping locally. Hide the cut around the backside and no one will see it. Have the seal sit on the pontoon and surround the air intake so you don't see the cut portion of the pontoon. Don't try "stuffing" it into the cut hole. It will look uneven because the gap between the fiberglass and the duct is not even all around. The purpose of the seal is just cosmetic, so you don't see the cut portion of the pontoon, it gives a "finished" look.

I replaced the disintegrated sponge rings by the rear air intake/vents.
For less than $8.00 I picked up 2 yellow Mini Sink Plungers from HomeDepot (also available at Lowes). Removed the rubber rings. Cut & placed around the intake tubes. Seam placed in back corner and is not visible. I thought of adding some black RTV to secure in place but haven't yet as they don't move and stay in place just fine.

I wanted to add a feature to this discussion about using a sink plunger ring for the air duct collars (escutcheons) in the pontoon above the engine bay. First, hats off to Chris Toller who is credited for finding this solution. The foam covers in my car were deteriorated and looked awful. These plunger rings work perfect and probably look better than the factory new collars. To install you are forced to cut the collar. With vibration and time the ring cut separates. To counter, I used some very sticky tape to hold it together. Tedious and tricky to get installed, but it worked? for a year or so. Tape ultimately couldn't tolerate the heat. Magnets are my new solution and here are some photos. I'm pleased so far with how this has worked out.
A couple of nuances: First the ring is just a bit snug. There was a slight gap even with the tape. To accommodate, I have the magnets extend beyond the ring edge a bit. Install the gap where it is not visible. Second, the glue. Thanks to Chris Miles for introducing me to Goop. It is remarkable for many difficult gluing applications. It will glue most any material and retains some flexibility. It amazingly adhered the magnets to the vinyl plunger collar. Hint: rough up the inner surface of the collar with some coarse sandpaper. The grey dot on the magnets are to insure I have them correctly oriented when gluing (if they repel, flip one over).
Now the collars (escutcheons) snap into position. And they unclasp easily to remove and clean.

There are also 10X5X2 mm rectangular that would butt up against each other flush if the round ones don't hold good, but should be OK.
As strong as these magnets are I would think they could be glued about 1/32" or less back from the joint edge??

Andy,
I purposely stayed away from the Neodymium Magnets. Some of them are so powerful you need a crow bar to separate. In this application just a light magnet works. You want to be able to pull out the collar without the glue giving way.
That does look like the lowest price I've seen for the sink plunger.

For those looking a more expensive option over the plunger:

I'm like 99.7% sure that is the exact same plunger gasket, just with the plunger removed and marked up 3x to cover the shipping cost and time to disassemble it from the plunger.
