Hey everyone, I have another crazy project.....
Over the past 3 weeks I have been working on a digital dash project.
As of now I am only working on the software side, eventually I will have to make changes to fit whatever screen I end up using
The Program is called Processing, which is a type of java.
I have the program running and talking to an Arduino board. The program takes values from the Arduino and applies it to the gauges. As of right now I have a screen hooked up with a menu so I can pick the value I want to send. Eventually sensor data will be polled and sent.
Once I have have the ground work done I'll be making quite a few different dashboard types that can be selected though the dash menu system.
I posted a a few pics and 2 videos. I have more work done, but I don't have permission to use this person's image I used so I'll post more as I redraw it.
The font is wrong, but I will change that later. Anyone know the name of the font?
eventually I will have it installed in the car (maybe by the show in July, I'm hoping)

37983

The fade in looks choppy in the youtube video, it doesn't look like that in person.
Digital dash startup

Digital dash with 95mph Back to the future speedometer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS_9jOMqw4A
p.s. Does anyone have any high res shots of the prototype dash? I want to model it as a working dash. I have quite a few pictures but I cannot get enough detail on it.
thanks for looking

The font is called "rustproof". If that helps. Also, check out my thread on custom gauge/dash designs, under Modern Dash Look here, http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?t=11785, or my site at http://gregschumsky.com under concepts and illustrations. Lots of different ideas I vetted out here on the forum.
And I can send you the PSD's if you want to use any of them.

I have that font but it is only the Delorean logo typeface, Does your copy have the Dashboard font. I looked at you images and it also doesn't seem to match it. That may take some more searching.
Sure, send them along, I could always use different styles. I'll recreate them in processing and you can see how they look when the are moving with data

Neat project....would be nice to see a kit made for something like that...specially if it could be user customized.
Also, how is ti going to connect to speedometer cable and the other things?
On the font....I couldnt tell you..I ended up using one called MoviePoster and making it fit close on the CG Delorean I made.

I personally like the C4 Corvette dash. We had an 85, and I still love the body style, being able to stow the roof behind the seats as it had a slotted shelf the top locked into, the 5 speed manual with overdrive, the whole one piece front hood like on a Jaguar for super easy engine access, the get up and go, the huge engine, the sound, the comfy seats, and so on and so forth. Plus you can find them now in pretty decent shape for pretty cheap. There's one by my house that's been sitting in a guys yard for a while - I've been wondering if he'd sell for cheap or just let me buy the digital dash.

I have a bunch of photos of the Proto-1 Dash. I was going to use them to make another dash t-shirt. They aren't the best quality but when I have time at home I will upload them here.

I abandoned my idea of a custom dash a long time ago, but at the time I found a font called "Roadway" which I thought would work OK for the gauges. Here's a sample.

New update, I rewrote the code for the needles. Now they pause during and and after the test sweep. I also fixed the needles so the if there are min/max values (like the volts), the needle will wait for the value to catch up.

Is that the actual speed of the needles during initializing? If so (and this is purely from a UX/Kinetec design point of view), I'd work on mimicking more of a natural, analog feel to the needles, which would have more of a speed curve to them- i.e. start slow, speed up, slow down, and then the same as they go to their actual positions. I'd start the slow down around the 90% or even 95% point of their animation, even though it'll be very subtle it should provide more of a natural feel (and thus less jarring).
Just my .03 cents (as my opinion is worth slightly more than .02 cents).

Update, few nights of programming and I have made more progress.
Changed needle from images to vector shapes
Changed Font to closer match
Added 140mph speedo
Added 240km/h metric speedo
Added metric for other gauges
I have my middle temp number set at half between min and max, I have to figure out how to make the rate change as the needle moves up.
Still need to do the icons, warning lights, and the metric red lower fuel ticks. Once that is done I'll be moving on to the prototype dashes
I have a screen coming tomorrow and should have access to a binnacle. As long as everything works out, Ill have a very rough prototype this weekend. Here is some sceenshots.
85mph

95mph Back to the future

Now you just need to come up with little circuits to convert the sensors to read into your micro. And you will need to install a wheel sensor to replace the angle drive.

Could run something off the angle drive without replacing it, probably.

I like your project, great idea but there's something I would suggest you change about the metric readouts. Why use the uneven numbers and fractions? Makes no sense and no "metric" car has values like that.
For temperature 38, 88 and 126. Why? Do 40, 90 and 120.
For oil pressure 2.8 and 5.6? Do 3 and 6. Or 2, 4 and 6.
Look at the speedometer, there are no values like that for the blue metric numbers. Otherwise you would end up with 5=8, 15=24.1, 25=40.2, 35=56.3, 45=72.4 and so on. This is not how it's done. The metric values do not need to correspond exactly to the prehistoric* values ;) They are separate and should use even numbers that are easy to understand with a quick glance.
* - metric is so much easier with just one value to remember - for distance there is only meter instead of inch, foot, yard, mile and whatever other values there might be. Once you have a meter you either divided with d (1/10), c (1/100), m (1/1000), n (1/10000) or you multiply it with k (kilo = 1000). Higher multiplication is not normally used. It makes life so much easier... you don't have to remember how many meters are in 1km because you already know that k is 1000. You don't have to remember things like 5280 feet per mile.
But I digress ;)
For the screen I would suggest using a OLED or AMOLED display as they do not require any backlight and provide black that is really black. There is no bleed and no light - black is truly black.
Good luck with the project! I'd love to see it in person.

It's been a little wile with no updates. I needed to button down a screen size, so I would not have to do a bunch of coding over again if the resolution changes.
So I have bought this LCD panel from a China (a bit of a long process)
386613865938660
The resolution is 1280X390 which is not that bad, just a touch smaller than the images I posted.
It will fit the the binnacle, but is not quite as wide as the stock cluster, (like 2 cm on each side) but the height is perfect.
Best of all, it runs on 12v
Now I wait, I should get it in the next 2 weeks depending on how fast DHL ships it.
Once I get it, I'll start making a bracket and use the stock holes in the binnacle. I will also make some sort of bezel to cover the non screen parts of the panel.

Cool. Hopefully you're documenting it all...cause it would be nice if it could be put together as a kind of kit.
1280x390 is a kind of odd resolution, though..hehe.
Have you done any designs using that resolution to see how good they look?

Yea I have scaled them down a bit an they look fine, because it all vector based it should still be as sharp and crisp. Because of the smaller horizontal area, I will have to squish some things to fit.
I am hoping the LCD gets here before the end of the year so I can work on it while I have extra time off. I don't think it has left China so I don't know.

When I installed cruise control on 5052 I installed a Rostra pulse generator in the location of the lambda counter. I would presume that the same part could be used for a digital speedometer as well.

Big Update, got my screen from china on Sat. and over the weekend tested and made a mounting bracket concept.
I make a bracket prototype today, but I still have some adjustments to do. I also need to go back to the hardware store and get different size bolts to mount control boards.

Mounted in the binnacle (quite snug)
38847
Front view
38848
Some shots with it running, little out of focus
388513885038849
Next step is to make a custom bezel to fit the front and join the edge of the screen to the rim of the binnacle. I think I am going to move the screen down about 1/4 of a inch, but may wait until I can verify the view from the seat.
Now that I have the screen, I can go back to programming. I have to do some rewriting because of the resolution change.

That's just the bottom of the plastic bracket I made, it'll be trimmed smaller in my next version of the bracket.
I moved the screen down so the bottom of the veiwable area meets the bottom of the binnacle. It looks much better and doesn't waste space you wont be able to see at the top.

Ive thought of doing this. But this is way above my capabilities. Amazing work.
An added bonus of running a stripped down obd2 computer is there are many unused inputs. Things like fuel level, speed, tempurature, etc can be fed to the ECU then to a computer to be used in an interface such as this. But as mentioned, getting a nice looking front end is way above my capabilities!

Just a quick update, I showed a demo at my Ohio Delorean meeting and got a lot of positive reactions. A few wanted to wanted to buy it for their cars. So, once I have finished and have the unit working in my car... I will look into making a kit for people to buy. No price or specs yet but I know it will be $1000 +. I may be able to run a dash only ( no center stack ) option for cheaper, but that depends on if I can get it to work on other hardware. I have got enough interest that I will keep a kit in mind as I develop it.
In other news, the Microsoft surface pro 3 will not work as my nerve center for dash and center stack. There is a problem with the Intel graphics that all Surfaces and most low-mid laptops use. The drivers will not allow the strange resolution that this lcd panel uses. More research will need to be made, but I may be looking at running a laptop with Nvidia graphics or a small form factor computer with a touch screen. I would lean more toward the laptop because of the battery and the screen being powered and driven by the computer.
that's it for now, here is a video showing full stock dashboard demo

This is very cool! Have you worked out how you're going to receive and process inputs from the car for the gauges themselves? Some of them are measured resistance, some are measured voltage, the tachometer is based on pulse counts, and the speedometer (currently) is all mechanical. Plus there's all the warning/indicator lights (turn signals, headlights, etc. Just curious how you're planning to receive and process all of the information. Great work

I finished up most of the proto1 dash and added needles. There is still tweaking to do on both but I am at a point where they are 90% done. So now I can move on to more fun and creative dash concepts. stay tuned.
I also added code to dampen the needle's sweep rate. This will keep them from going crazy if I have a data spike or instant change in values.

This is the hardware I have ended up with. Its a Intel Nuc micro computer i7 8Gb ram and 128Gb ssd hardrive. It runs everything nice and fast. Best of all it boots to windows in under 10 sec.

I took the whole setup to Ken's and stuck it in one of his other cars to test look and viewing angles. It looks washed out on the pics but in person it looks really good, Should be bright enough even in the daytime.

I took the screen out of the binnacle so I can redesign the bracket and mounting system. I also have my 10.4 in touchscreen for the center console.
The one on the left has the stock dash, with a mock-up of the interface I will be writing. The one on the right has the proto dash and a android virtual machine running Spotify.
Both screens are running of the same computer.
4008240083
Over the next few weeks I will be roughing in the center screen interface. I previous designed it for a much larger screen and need to find a good balance for the size of everything. Now that I have the physical screen, I can test how it looks and the sizes of different buttons and menus.

Just a test fit to check viewing angles. The display is perfectly readable by the driver seat. The passenger side gets a little dark. The screen is easy to reach and not blocked by the gear shift. I got a quote from a local machine shop for a bracket. The new bezel will fit in the space in the console and hold the screen. It will made of stainless and will be attached to a stainless replacement for the metal section around the gear shift and button section. It should look pretty nice when it's done.

On my car I'll be moving the air vents to the knee pads, I've seen a few people do that. The A/C controls will be controlled by the touch screen. The lights and hazards will be moved to a button on the console as well as on the touch screen.

Not sure yet, this till a early prototype, and not installed in a car yet. This is someone eles's car that I did a crude test fit to check how it will look.
I am a really picky about dark cabins when I am driving at night. I always have panel lights dimmed very low. That being said, having options to reduce brightness is a big deal with me. I will be able to dim the 2 displays for night time driving. With that I will have night modes to reduce extra lights and use red colors. And for the best option for night time driving, I will have a Heads up display projected on a piece of glass with the dash screen turned off.

Probably wont be too bad if the bright area on your screen is a darker background. I've never been in a car that has a touch screen thing, so I couldnt say how its done, really.

The plan is to offer the screen, bracket, and bezel in one part that attaches via the factory screw holes on your existing binnacle. Basically swap out and swap in. The wiring will be a little harder. Haven't got that far yet.

Took a break from what I was working on and started a new dash to add to the system.
I love 80's digital dashboards and plan on making DMC-ized versions of a bunch of them. Most of them are pretty simple visually, containing mostly different shaped bar graphs and LED Numbers. That being said, it should be pretty easy to make working versions of them.
I started on the dash from the 1989 Subaru XT Turbo. I love the 80's "3d" videogame like perspective. It looks like this blue/yellow color scheme was not the production colors (or the dash pictured was modified) The real dash is a red/orange style. It will be quite easy to change the colors and make both options available.
There is not much more I need to add but I thought I would post what I have so far. I need to change the font and make some more adjustments still, also there is some more programing on the back end to get it working with my other dashes but it should not take to long. I'll post it again when it's finished and working.

dakota digital makes a angle drive reader for their system. I'm hoping to use that to read the stock speedo cable. I might have to look into other means if that doesn't work. I'll always have GPS as a backup, if the angle drive starts giving crazy readings it will switch to GPS.

Updates
Finished the 89' Subaru XT Turbo Dash. I have some adjustments still to do, but it's done for the most part. The RPM readout is one size instead of the 10's and 1's place reduced sizes, I need to figure out how to do that.
41378
41379
I have both colors that I have found pictures for. It looks like that blue version was a demo model, I like the red one better.
The turbo meter just mirrors the RPM meter for now, I'll most likely change that to throttle position later.
I also have spent a load of time developing my debug menus and warning system.
Debug Menu 2 (1/2 finished)
This screen will let me activate, suppress, or allow the system to calculate any warning signal. This is really helpful in working on new dash boards. If I am having problems with a sensor in the future, I can disable a warning signal. The green/red lights show if the sensor/data is sending a ok or warning signal.
41376
Debug Menu 3.
This menu overrides any variable data to a value chosen with the slider. This is really useful because I have no live data coming in yet. I can test warning triggers and meter behavior.
41377
Warning Menu
This screen lists all the active warnings as they are triggered, was warning are resolved, the other items move up (took me days to figure out how to code that)
This is all automatic.... as soon as the fuel level drops below 15%, the low fuel light comes on, and the low fuel message pops up in the warnings menu.
I will write better descriptions the future, they will be more like the fuel warning where it shows the levels and calculates range (based on 28 mpg, but live when I can calculate real data) The clear buttons are not active yet, but they will clear the warning off this screen, but the light will still stay on.
I still have some more work to do on this one.
41380
these screenshots look blurry, I made them small to save download time and space. Everything is nice and clear in the program.

Worked a bit more on the new dash the past week, exmerming with new features.
This is the Subaru Dash with opening.
I remade the car graphic with new art. This fits the angles better.
*Yes the little car has working tail lights, they well mirror what the car's rear lights are doing. And the doors will open on the screen as well
The Message area under the speed will scroll through all the active warnings and issues. I will be writing better messages later but the system is in place.
That's all for now. I should be picking up a mechanical speedometer sending unit tomorrow at summit. I looked over the data sheets and I am sure I can make it work. I'll work on testing now so it is out of the way.

A preview of Dash 4, my first completely original design. Here are the basics
-The car will move along a speed proportional 80's 3D grid. The faster the speed, the faster the grid will move (mostly done)
-if the wheel is turn the perspective will change and you will see more of the side of the car (working on artwork). This is all 2D sprite work, and it is very time consuming. The grid lines will change with the perspective (some done, lots of math involved, this is all 2D like a video game.)
-car wheels will move and rotate and turn with car movement
-All lights, doors and windows will show the same as the actual car.
-On the left and right will be floating gauge sets.
-different color options
-more to come, this is still in the very early stages.

Great work! How are you coming along with the electronics side of it? Any ideas on how to sense the 12v signals?
Well, yes and no.
I bought a mechanical speedometer sender from summit racing and was able to get some data out of it, but was unhappy with the way it worked. I think I will be taking it back and getting a better unit and that should do the trick. I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to wait until the car is finished until I can try r&d the signals. I think it won't be too hard tho. The car is taking a little longer than I expected which means I will not be looking at a lot of time to get the prototype in the car before DCS. I can use GPS if I can't get the speedo to work right away, and I am confident that the read RPM, Fuel level, volts using stock. The oil psi and water temp should be easy with aftermarket sensors. As long as I have those working, I can drive it to DCS as is. I am not sure if I can get the A/C controls done in time, and I might have to mount them in a temporary location.
In the meantime, I am trying to get some more of the backend programing done, so I can just change the trigger or sensor variables to the data coming in. I also need to work on design for the LCD mounting plate for the console so I can have a local machine shop make it for me.
I also have finished the intro for the 4th dashboard. My first total original design. Very 80's videogame inspired.

Just a quick update. I haven't been doing much on the software side the past few weeks. Taking a break for a bit, sometimes I get burned out and unmotivated. Then I'll open it up and be up till 4am working on it.
I have been working on some of the hardware in that time. I taught myself CAD and have been working on the center console screen bracket and shifter plate.
Here is the design.
42193
The parts match up with the factory holes so there is no drilling. The LCD is sandwiched between the red and blue part, with the green part surrounding it. It is an odd design because I was trying to avoid visible screw holes. I ended up with just 4 around the shifter. I plan on using some nice hex screws for that.
The DMC letters are a cut out so I can install LED's under so it lights up.
The cutout above that is for usb ports etc.. I am going to design some kind of door for it.
The holes at the bottom are for 6 switches and U shaped black switch guards. Everything is going to be made out of Grade 304 Stainless Steel.
I have the plans drawn up and will be cut on a waterjet cutter at a local machine shop. They should be ready next week. It should be around $200.00 for everything.
I will be making a new console box that takes the place of the armrest and ashtray. It will join up with the end of the shifter plate and continue back to the shelf. I'm planning on adding 2 cup holders where the tray was. The box will be quite shallow, only about 2in deep. That should be big enough for a phone, wallet, usb key, etc. I plan on having it lockable with usb power inside. I might also hide some switches or buttons in there.
In other news the driver board for the dash LCD is on it's long trip back to China to be reprogrammed so I can adjust the brightness. It should be 2-3 weeks before it makes it back

Big Update, I got my parts made and after some adjustments got everything assembled.
The parts have been made with 1/16 in grade 304 Stainless Steel ( of Course) so they are pretty heavy duty parts.
I have the switches installed, there are 6 MON-OFF-MON switches. I don't want switches that stay on they will just trigger the relays. The switch guards are reproductions of a NASA design, and are anodized aluminum.
The DMC logo and box above it have a black cardboard piece under it for now. eventually the logo will be backlit and the box will have a door and have switches, buttons, usb ports, etc.
The shift boot is stock, I have the option to easily switch to a gated plate in the future.
Here they are before assembly.... I made a few mistakes in the design of one of the parts and had to make some ugly cuts. It's ok because it will not be seen.

Sure it will, autos should be just fine.
If you look at the parts, the opening is modeled exactly off the stock hole. The manual boot is just cliped in. The auto plate should fit right in it's place. You could use stock, or a SS one from DMOCO http://www.dmoco.com/products.html

After talking with Ken and getting I got the news that the car is too behind schedule to make the drive to DCS ( it will be trailered) and it will be visually finished, but may not be drivable. I have decided that we are going forward and not installing the stock center console, radio, vents, hvac controls, switches, shift plate, etc. We are going to install my center unit as we finish off the interior. So.... at the very least I need to have my relay board working with the microcontroller. I think I have the vac lines for hvac system worked out.

Just out of curiosity, if you were to sell this, how trouble free do you expect it to be? I only ask because it's a fairly significant modification to a critical part of the car (though it is reversible with effort), so if something went wrong, you could be dead in the water, with no idea what's wrong. I assume you'd almost have to have some if not significant programming experience to keep up with it in the event that something goes wrong, correct? I'm sure if you sell 100 of these kits, you don't want to end up spending your free time playing "tech support," :banghead: haha. I know personally, I've gone back and forth on this issue with regard to helping with engine swaps.
I'm just curious because with people saying "I want one," I want to know if it's really that simple. People say that about DeLoreans as a whole all the time, then they realize they know nothing about DeLoreans or car maintenance, and have more bad experiences than good. Not trying to put this down as it is very cool, I just wanted to put the point out there. Keep posting photos/videos; this is definitely a cool project!

It depends on how flashy, the Corvette one only took a few nights work because it is mostly text. It takes a little less now that I can copy some of my code from other dashes. The Subaru and Corvette dash use alot of the same code.

Thanks for taking the time to show my wife and I! Really great work. You nailed it when you said the best way to learn to code is to get a passion project, it's the reason I haven't yet learned to code. ;)
The pictures we took of the dash didn't turn out, old camera phone in the dark and all, but it looks really great in person. The NES emulator is a nice touch as well.

Is it your plan to make kits and sell them as "Plug & Play"? Or is this just going to be a one off kinda thing?

Update: DCS 16 Wrap Up & moving forward.
45062
Vin 909, Nearly complete @ DSC 16.
Well, its been a whirlwind week and a half. I left for a week long camping trip right after DCS and now I am back home. I wanted to again thank everyone for at the show for coming by and checking out the car. I got so wrapped up in showing people the system, cleaning, and checking out the show, I did not take a whole lot of pictures. ( if anyone was there and wants to post any here, feel free.)
One of the many who stopped by took a video and put it up on youtube. It shows the system in action.

Thanks Marty Edwards.
Moving Forward
Here is what I am looking at over the coming months.
Car
As of the show, the car has yet to be started and the doors were far from finished. Most of the components are in place and we should be starting it soon. Sometime next week the car will be transported up near my house so I can work on the dash some while Ken is busy and out of town for a few weeks. In that time I will try to do some tweaking of the hardware and software. If the car is running by then, I can try to start getting data to feed into the computer.
After a few weeks it will go back to Ken's shop for final tweaking and then it will be time to take it home permanently. I will continue to work on it from here on out.
Fabrication
I learned a lot about the fit of the console as we rushed to get everything ready for the show. I found flaws in my design that will need to be fixed. The biggest problem is the position of the hole for the shifter. The opening is too far back and as you use the gears at the top, the shifter bar hits the edge of the opening and pushes the entire unit forward. The solution to this is to recut a new bracket with a redesigned shift area. I have to move the screen/flux or the DMC logo down below the shifter to move the hole up. It will most likely be the sceen/flux because it was not easy to read from that angle. There is the possibility of using a different screen also.
In the recut I will have to make some adjustments to make it fit better. When I made the first one, I only had the console out of the car, so I had to make do with what I had.
I will need do a rewire whole unit so I can feed it to a better harness that I can remove easier.
I also want to raise the parcel shelf up 1-2 in and make a opening lid to store all the electronics. There is just not enough room behind the console.
Software
I wanted so much more functionality to show of my software but life has it's way of stealing time here and there. I ran into an error in the software that will cause me to go in and do a bit of house cleaning of the code. I mainly need to do some reorganizing. My next steps are to add more of the menu screens and add more to the dashboards. I want to add a univeral on dash menu for the eventual steering wheel controls, as well as some custom menus for each dash.
I have a few more dashes I want to make as well as finish my 80's retro one.
As I used it more and watched it have fits and fail, I am starting to rethink the android part of the project. The software I was using worked great sometimes and froze and crashed other other times. I am having a hard time seeing as a reliable source for music, gps, and entertainment. I am going to look into other options.
Hardware
My next big step is to get the hardware and computer to talk back and forth. I had some major problems with this in the weeks before the show and had to push it aside so I could try to get other things done. Now that the show is over I need to work on this problem.
Once I get them communicating correct information to each other than I can start trying to gather real data to send in.
The future
I do want to make some kind of kit or installer option. But at the pace I am working, it may be a few years off. I need to get everything working and long term tested in my car before I would sell anything to someone. I don't want to mess up someone's car or sell something that doesn't work. If I keep on it and accomplish everything I want to, I will have everything working and flushed out by DCS 18' After talking with Rich, I will most likely be doing some kind of talk or presentation there.
I have a long way to my goals and this was my first huge step. I have some setbacks that need overcome, but I am sure I can make this happen. I will be sure to keep you updated along the way.

Very cool to see it working in the car.
Looks like you got a good roadmap going, cant wait to see the completed project working n bug free.
Couple years for a kit works for me..I'll prolly have my car done and to a point where I can think of spiffy things like that.

I think seeing the SNES controllers pushed me over the edge, this is just amazing, lol. Great idea! Are you using an emulator within Android or another unit/console displayed on the screen?
Apologies I haven't read the whole thread yet.
Finally, I wanted to recommend some potential digital dashes you could use, they aren't beautiful but if you wanted options, one is from the JDM RHD mkiii Supra and another from the 80sToyota Turbo pickup. The Supra may be too asymmetrical because that dash extends to the center of the car, but I think the pickup might work well. The mitsubishi starion had a digidash, too, but i don't know how aesthetically pleasing it was. The Supra has a few gauges off to the center of the car you'd have to change but the tach tree is decent.

The system is running Windows 10, so just used a emulator. The center console screen is just a touch screen.
I have run across those dashboards. Over the next few years, my goal is to try to recreate every digital dash i can find. Seems crazy but there aren't as many as you would think. Maybe 20-30... They don't take much space in the code and are fairly easy to make ( depending on complexity).

Oddly enough, the OEM layout is still my favorite. The Proto 1 is a cool option. I'm curious, is the instrument screen display something you found stock a stock or is it borrowed from another vehicle?
How do you plan to input process data signals from the various sensors and mechanical Speedo? GPS would be seemly easy for speed, but then you have Odometer/trip meter to record.

Very, very cool.
My car is going to be going down for a complete overhaul shortly- I have some serious frame rust to fix, and figure if I have to pull the body off the frame I'm doing ALL THE THINGS that I need/want to do to the car while I'm at it up to and including an engine swap. I almost hope that all of it takes me long enough that you have this done and available for us to purchase so I can incorporate it into the car when I put everything back together.

I got the screen via special order from china. I believe the screens are designed for advertisements and subway car status screens.
I can get speed data via a mechanical speedo sender. It connects to the speedo cable (standard size). It sends 16 pulses per revolution. I can read them and using some math on a arduino can get the speed. Trip/Odo functions are when the arduino will write to an EPROM chip every 1/10th of a mile. This saves data when no power is in the system. I also will have the computer write to a log file every 10-15 mins or so as a backup.
Other data can be obtained by using aftermarket sensors

Hey everyone, it's been awhile since I updated here... so here is the news.
Part 1
As the summer ends and we move toward fall, my hours pick up at work and I have less time to work on other projects. Along with work, as with most people my motivation for projects fluctuates over time and I get burnt out and need a break. So the past few months have been a little unproductive, but I have started working on it more and more lately. Here is what I have been up to the past few months.
The Car
In the time since DCS the car is now running, nearly everything is done on the car except a few things that still need adjusted. Ken is at a stopping point because the work I am doing needs to be finished before the last bits can be finished up. Because of winter, hopefully this weekend he will be trailering the car up to me for the winter so I can get my project finished ( at least most of it ) before it goes back down to his shop in the spring. Once he has everything done (mostly finishing up the doors), I will get the car to take home for good. Because I will have access to the car whenever I want and not a 2 hour drive each way to get to it, I will be making tons of new progress. My work really thins out just before Christmas, so I will have lots of weekend time to work on it.
I have installed the stock instrument cluster for testing. I need good data readings to compare to my new sensor data when I get it working.

Part 2
Car Integration
This past weekend I ran some new code and got the first steps of the system working
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYDjVm00zwU&feature=youtu.be
In this video I have my switches below the shifter activating the parking lights and headlight. The results are displayed instantly on the screen. I can also hit the button on the screen and turn the lights on from there, but the communication between the computer and the controller was having some major problem. Because I didn't have access to the car and the relay board when I wrote it, so had to combine 2 sections of code I wrote and they didn't work right. I was 2 hours from home, so I could only do so much. The buttons were laggy and sometimes reset the microcontroller. More work needs done before this will work smoothly, but the status of the lights coming into the computer was quick and worked every time.
The next part was a color picker to change the lighted DMC letters. It uses the same system so it was flakey too.
Here are the final screen for the main lights menu (needs labels) and a early concept of the interior lights option.

Part 3
R&D
I may not have been doing a lot with the car and the program, but I have been doing a lot of research.
I have obtained a aftermarket fuel sender and have been able to read it with the microcontroller. The data is a bit erratic but I can fix it with code. I should be able to use this instead of the factory sender, which is very hard to read from.
I also have a new mechanical speedometer sensor that I should be better results with. Still haven't worked on that yet.
here is some first attempts at controlling a RGB LED. It didn't work every well. I was sending a command to display white and it was going crazy. Interesting effect, would be fun for parades.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV1PuKs6QAs&feature=youtu.be
HUD Tests
I have obtained some special glass to experiment with for the hud, along with a little 5in display. It looks good in the right conditions, it will be a challenge to get it work in the car without creating tons of reflections on the windshield. Much more work needs to be done.
http://i.imgur.com/KBB2ZsA.jpg
3D Printer!
Last night I ordered this bad boy. It's a Makerfarm 12" Pegasus 3D Printer.
http://i.imgur.com/d7opLfe.jpg
It has a huge 12x12x13 build area, so I will (in theory) be able to print a custom binnacle in 2 pieces. I also will be able to make my own enclosures, sensor brackets, cable management, HVAC ducts and valves, modified replacement parts, and tons more. It's going to really allow me get some of this stuff working much faster.
If the binnacles come out well, I might consider selling them. Anyone interested?
That's all for now. Hopefully the car will be up this weekend and I can start working on it again.

Hello everyone. Giving you a progress update.
The car is now in town. Ken brought it up for some work then dropped it off. I am renting a buddy's garage so I have a place to work on it over the winter. I plan on working on it pretty much every weekend till it is in a basic working state.
First off some 3d printing news. I got my printer and am still working at it, it's not a plug and play operation so it's a learning experience.
This was my 2nd "successful" print. Its really rough

I found a decent match for the carpet and the whole thing will be covered with new carpet for a uniform look. I have a latch and gas strut for the door. Kevin,
Glad to hear that you are making further progress on the digital dashboard. We have not had time to dedicate to this yet, but it is on our list. Been spending all my time fixing up the houses.
Maintenance can sure eat up your time.
BTW, WE are also finally getting to the production of the video of your presentation at DeLorean Weekend 2016. Radek hopes to have it done by the end of the month. He has been very busy with other DeLorean Weekend and Star Trek videos.
We are making progress on the Dream DeLorean. A number of suggestions have come in from other D owners. The car is going to have a totally new dashboard. It is going to be 3D printed. Lots of engineering on making all the HVAC electronic.
Right now, I am booked through the end of March, so I am hoping to really get up this project in April. August 12 in Hinsdale, IL at the Delorean MidWest CLub BBQ will be the first viewing of the Dream Delorean.

I have been working on the software lately. I am in the process of a full rewrite of my software, I have learned a lot in the last year and some of my code was very clunky from me new to the process.
As a result the rewrite is making it simpler to add features like this and will allow me to make new dashboards much faster. I completely rewrote the needle code from scratch, making them much more accurate.
I can also now change colors on the fly, Still a early design of the color picker, but eventually I will have alternate and customizable color schemes for all the dashboards.
For those of you who are interested, I did a talk at Delorean Weekend last Oct. on my dash. Here is a video of it. You'll have to forgive me, I am not a great public speaker.

Here is some crazy color options.

Just an amazing project you have taken on. I could see this going in 5609 in the future if it's offered as a retail kit. My car is so far from stock that I no longer worry about originality, I just want to make it fun for me.
Do you have any ballpark estimates on price and availability timeframe?

I definitely still want one when this is all finished up and more widely available (or if you make the plans & tools available, I'm certainly not above doing a lot of work).
I apologize for not going back through all of the thread, but you're still running a fairly stock engine with all of this, right? I will probably need to get at least a little into the programming of how it works since mine will be getting a new engine (still waffling between the L67 3800 I have and a 13B-MSP such that the car would have the engine it was originally slated to get) and will thus be running it with a standalone (likely MS) of some sort.
Something I noticed looking at your car with the door open made me think of one of the things that I'm looking to do when I have mine largely disassembled for all the work I'm going to be doing: I'm planning on losing the old plunger-switches on the doors in favor of magnets and reed switches. I have a bear of a time getting mine adjusted so the lights don't flash on when I hit large bumps, so decided losing switching to something different like the reed switch that (properly set) isn't as sensitive to it would be an improvement.

Wow, I haven't looked at this thread in awhile.
I'm pretty sure when Disarming that Bomb you're supposed to cut THE Red wire. Or is it the other red wire. [emoji23]
I hope you are marking them somehow.
In all seriousness, the design work is mind blowing. Will this be available in Heath-kit form? [emoji12]

This is my first time finally looking through and holy crap is there more? Since the last engine swap thread I went down the rabbit hole of doing an EV conversion and thought maybe I should do a digital dash to display everything.
I'd like to mess with the digital dash while i start saving for the EV components. What is the physical size of the display?
Love the synthwave dashes by the way, that's 100% what I plan on going for.

Does anyone have an update on this? Hopefully it just didn’t stop at a non-functional set of graphics on a screen that fits the dash. I’d install it on mine

I emailed him through the forum and commented on the YouTube video featuring it. I haven't gotten a response yet.
Now I've got a raspberry pi with a carberry shield. This will allow me to get can signals from the motor controller. I want to use the code and alter it to work with the signals I get. I'm working on a separate plain text display just to get something first cause I don't want to start this from scratch.

Even if he did finally finish the project, at the end of the day, it wouldn't be anywhere close to a plug and play solution, unless he's been doing some crazy R&D in the past couple years.
Anyone wanting to complete this would have to start their own project, although it would probably include a good set of directions plus software.
Additionally, most owners aren't willing to go the extremes that bttws has gone in modifications. I definitely saw this when I finished my own modern cluster. People just get cold feet when they see the time and money involved in this kind of project.
Hell, there's only a handful of people on this very forum, including me, who are willing to tear extensively into their classic car...resale value be damned. :whip:
/end rant
In any case, I'd still like to see this project complete and functional haha. :p

Id be willing to put the money to something that is relatively easyish to install..as close to plug n play as possible. Yup, I'm another one who will happily modernize every piece I can..hehe.

Hi
I am looking to intellitronix.com to build me a digital dash
I have attached three pdf's to show what I am proposing.
This using current designs into a custom board.
It will be all leds, with the battery lamp relocated and monitored.
I would appreciate if there is any interest in this.

Does anyone have really good drawing of the original dash/instrument cluster that they might be willing to share?
something like the attached but in higher resolution, a line drawing would be even better.

I have an idea for a fun little project...
Didn't mean to stray off topic but hopefully this is ok.
Many thanks

So are you getting a decal made to lay over a new circuit board with LEDs and micros to drive them?

Dave
Basically yes.
They do digital dash for various cars and trucks.
I want a custom board that will fit in the dash to replace the existing instruments and lights.
A decal or an custom cover to indicate what things do.
The only addition is an extra wire to monitor that the Battery bulb has not burned out.
The bulb will be relocated.
I have attached an updated Leds drawing.
The MPH and RPM also has digital display in the center of the bar graph.
