View Full Version : Frame & Body Anyone know why the LH taillight lens always seems more faded than the RH?

Anybody else noticed this? After looking at loads of pictures of Ds, it always seems to be the LH lens that has suffered the most.
Act of God? Something to do with most cars being driven on the right?
It's bugging me...

My guess is there was a batch of defective drivers side lens made.

I have noticed that over the years. If only one is faded of the two, it's almost always the driver's side. I've never come across a definitely reason why.

I'm not sure why the left hand taillight is usually more faded, but I have seen a few other cars where the RH side is faded and the LH side is not. I would have to guess that there were more "bad" left hand lenses made that didn't have any UV protection.
In a few extreme cases where a car has sat outside for many years the amber will turn from yellow to almost clear. My car has a faded LH lens currently that needs replacing.

I think it would have been a manufacturing problem with a certain batch. And maybe that day/batch they made mostly LH taillights and not as many RH ones? I don't think it would be a wear and tear item that got worn out quicker like we might see with driver's side vs passenger side parts (torsion bars, bolsters, seats and belts, etc.).
The latest car posted on the Beverly Hills Car Club (http://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1981-dmc-delorean-c-4972.htm)site has about the most dramatic difference I think I have seen so far (might be the one the OP saw and thought to ask because of it?)

I've seen faded rights as well. Actually swapped some around to make a car "match".

Here's a right lens that has faded to almost clear. On that red car for sale it might actually look kinda cool with two clear lenses as long as you put some amber bulbs in there to stay legal.
