Removing/Replacing Front Shocks...And Which Ones?

Greetings, all.

I'm pre-planning removing and replacing my front shocks. I've done some suspension work on the front before and dealing with the front springs are a total pain. I found the rears to be real easy. As I'm looking in the workshop manual in J:11:01, it doesn't mention anything about needing a spring compressor if all I'm doing is replacing the shocks and not the springs. The entire assembly can be compressed with a floor jack on the LCA while keeping the spring in place.

I don't have any desire to lower my car with the updated springs but I'm wondering if the manual is correct with this? If so, that'd make life a lot easier. I know there have been few errors in the manual in the past.

And then...which ones are the current favs? I know Spax are popular but DeLorean EU seems to have some real popular ones, too. I've also been hearing about ProTech. Those seem to be the three I'm most interested in.

All of the DMCH vendors sell the Ed Uding EU versions, which are wonderful. I have them on my own car in the front. Spax quality has gone to hell and they are not a good choice anymore.

Correct, you don't have to use a spring compressor, but you do need to support the LCA with a jack etc. before removing the shock.

I have Ed Uding's shocks. Love them so far. I like that they're adjustable, and you don't need to use any spacers for the lower bolt, as they come ready to install.

When I got them, I was curious, and did an image search on Google, and these look an awful lot like AVO shocks... Which were apparently designed by Ron Avon (Avo-n), who also designed the Protech's.

This is just my guess... In any case, I find Ed's /DMC's shocks are sturdy and worth the money.

Great info, thanks guys. That's what I was looking for. Looks like I'll be going with Ed's. Way too many happy drivers with them.
