View Full Version : General NLA parts tracker

With mention of the possibility of building new DeLoreans came the question of what the effect on NLA parts would be, or what other rare parts would then become NLA? Would Houston remake these NLA parts? What would it do to the part prices?
I thought this thread could be used to track parts which are NLA. Populate it as you see fit.
Here are some that came to mind (some obvious, some not, some just that I went looking for them for my own car and realized they were NLA):
100207 - Left front fender (right front fender currently priced at $618.75; rear quarters at $1,246.86)
103516 - Auto trans pan gasket (cork)
108142 - Oil cooler support bracket (for auto trans cars only)
103512 - Fitting, cooler hose (for auto trans oil cooler)
109042 - Brake fluid reservoir (as well as 109041 which is the fluid reservoir indicator separately)
100823 - Steering column lock assembly (which includes the ignition key tumbler)
101854 & 110436 - Binnacles (black and grey)
101988 - Steering column canopy, upper and lower
100622 - Slide release bars (for forward/back seat movement)
110171 - Trim panel and arm rest (bolster) - there are 8 combinations of early/late VIN style and colour, and 7 of the 8 are NLA

Don't forget right side hub carriers, these are easily broken when someone takes a hammer to a frozen link bolt. #100470

Oh man... there's a story to go with soooo many of these parts, eh Dan!?
Many things on my car were missing on Day One... but not all of them, lol. Whoops!!

DMCH has been working to getting to this point for a lot of years. They have all of the records on who supplied what parts originally and have been developing relationships with many parts suppliers over the years to replicate/duplicate many of the parts already. This news can only mean that every part will be available BUT, they may not be available quite the way they were originally. Color, texture, function, and fit may be different. DMCH will not spend more on a part then they have to, especially when originality will not be as important for the "new" cars. In the meantime they probably have enough stock to start making a few "new" ones using either NOS parts or good, used stock. For the first ones the only thing "new" will be the Title and the tires (an exaggeration). This is good news for every Delorean owner, it means DMCH will be around for a long time and our cars will continue to be supported with parts.

Just as interesting, perhaps, are the parts that they have just, say, a dozen left, and if this new program gets off the ground, then those parts will become NLA.
No idea what those parts are, of course.

The auto trans pan gasket was one of those for me. I had no idea it was about to be NLA or I would have ordered more than one when I had the chance. That's a pretty easy one to come up with another solution thankfully. An example of how it can happen though. Complete mystery as to when the dreaded cost of $0.00 shows up.

Maybe DMC has been marking parts NLA in anticipation of needing them for these new builds. Most every thing can be manufactured again it's just the stainless panels that would need a high dollar setup cost.

Ok, right, I forgot.
I did ask you about some of those things a while back when you mentioned you had them, but you didn't have many specifics to share at the time. Your website doesn't process Canadian addresses, so no shipping charges were shown, and you didn't reply back to me when I asked you directly. I also wondered about the cost of those parts plus whether every other mundane car part out of the database is something you could offer and what that price would be but I never got an answer.
I'm afraid I can't go ahead and buy things like that without knowing a few more specifics. I'm not saying this is a direct analogy, but no one should ever go out to eat and then order the "special" that the waitress tells you all about but doesn't mention how much it is. I just don't think that's a smart way to go about spending money. Sorry.

Automatic Transmission Mounts were not available over 6 years ago when VIN 1662 needed one, but fortunately we were able to safely weld an old one back together. Has anyone re-manufactured them since then, or are they to be added to the NLA list too?

I think this list is a little misleading; its just items that aren't available from DMCH in their online store, not parts that aren't available. Heck, DPI, Grady, DMCEU, and even SpecialTAuto have replacement parts for most of these parts. Just because they're not available in the DMCH online store doesn't mean they're not available.
I think this list should focus on things that are truly no longer available anywhere as a new part, which is a surprisingly small list (and getting smaller every day). The main ones I can think of are some interior pieces, and the left front fender.

Sounds good Nick. That was what I had intended. Learning about where these parts can be found if under lesser known names or websites is part of it. The Houston webstore may be the default, but isn't the only, like you said. Not knowing where to get something if it is available, is still NLA to someone looking if it remains unknown.
How would we then go about sharing what parts are truly available (and where from and for how much) if they show as NLA on the Houston page?

I remember DMCH used to sell entire NOS seats (not just the seat covers). Haven't those been NLA for about a decade now? I guess new seats would need to be sourced; or existing used stock would have to be refurbished. Things like the passenger side knee pads and consoles have been gone for some time, too. I'd have to think remaking any of the NLA interior trim would be extremely cost prohibitive; hence why binnacles & such have never surfaced.

100823 - Steering column lock assembly (which includes the ignition key tumbler)
A replacement lock cylinder crossing to a 1980 Rover SD1 (Rover Part # CRC3914) will bolt up to the DeLorean steering column; however, the key blank is different. Also the Rover plug is different and thus either the plug or the switch itself needs to be swapped out. I have verified that the Stock DMC ignition switch will attach to the Rover unit with zero modifications.

The turn signal and wiper control stalks are currently available as I picked up on January 26, 2016 at DMC Northwest an unused assembly still in a plastic bag for $131.19. It was an expensive mistake on my part for breaking the very important black plastic and i decided to replace the entire assembly. I donated my original assembly to the pile of used parts collecting at DMC NW.

I only ask because it sounds like a good idea and I have a pile of my own used parts that could be helpful to someone, but only if they don't get thrown out. Do other vendors or clubs or pockets of owners do this?
I wouldn't want to see it turn into a thing where the holder of the parts is trying to make money off of it, but instead has this kind of used parts pile for any owners that are in a bind and just need to get their car going again and not perfect or brand new looking in that problem area.

This is not true. CV joints are readily available, and very affordable (as low as $55). There is nothing special about our CV joints. It is a very common misconception that these are not available (not sure why). They have been available new for years. They are the exact same CV joints used on 1975-1989 Porsche 930/911 Turbos. They are also extremely popular both in mid-engine racing culture, and in dune buggy culture. You can buy ones manufacturered by Empi, GKN Lobro (our OEM supplier), Kartek, or Pro-Am.
Check out this website: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/porsche-930-and-911-turbo.html
39511
These are all the same CV joints that we use on our cars. Most of these listed are actually way overkill for our cars compared to the torque that a rock crawler, dune buggy, or 911 turbo puts through them, but they're also very affordable.
You can purchase them brand new for $55 each here: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/porsche930cv-empi-1.html
39512
Even the original manufacturer of our CV joints (GKN Lobro) still makes them and sells them for $107 each (though I'm sure the EMPI joints are fine for our cars) http://www.pacificcustoms.com/porsche930cv-german.html
39514
If you've got money to burn, you can even buy race prepped and lightened CV joints for $257 each (maybe these will be on the 2017 DeLorean) : http://www.pacificcustoms.com/porsche930cv-proam-lp.html
39515
I'm really not sure why all of the vendors (aside from DPI) don't carry these.:hmm:
I actually use the oversized CV joint boots and large boot flanges sold by these guys for my boots. Finally no more torn boots. :D The flanges also allow the joints to operate at an even larger angle if necessary.

I agree, the original boots are terrible. Even before my engine swap, mine were always tearing. I replaced my boots about 2 years ago, and within 6 months, 2 had torn. Totally unacceptable. At that point I was done with using original boots and started searching for other options.
The first picture is my stock boots, which tore shortly after. I bought the boots in the middle picture and never looked back. The picture on the right is the new boots installed.
395493955039551
These guys take CV joint boots pretty seriously since loosing a boot on a dune buggy or rock crawler, can mean the quick destruction of a CV joint. They have several different options, including a double boot system (inner boot and outer boot) for extreme protection.
The options are:
Conical Boots: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac501111b-930.html
39556
If I still had the stock boot flanges, I'd be using these. The extra ridges ensure that the rubber never exceeds the elastic range when the joint pivots and rotates. The stock boots can be under a lot of stress when fully the joint is at its extreme angle.
Barrel Shaped Boots:http://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac501111be-930.html
39552
Not sure if there are any advantages to these, but it seems like these would only be advantageous if you were rarely angling the joint. I'd take the conical boots over these.
Large boot: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac501112b-930.html
39554
This is what I have now. Very robust. You do however have to change your boot flanges over to the large boot flange. (below)
Large Flange: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac501112f-930.html
39555
These are required to use the large boots. Since the boots go over the bolts, you have to install the shaft, then slide the boot onto the flange. You also dont need the little crescent moon shaped washers with these flanges because the material is 3 or 4 times the thickness. The main advantage of these is that because of how they're designed, they allow the ball bearings to safely travel a bit further, meaning that axles can safely operate at a larger angle than the stock flanges. This was one of my biggest considerations for using them. These flanges are machined for 3/8-24 bolts instead of M10 bolts, so it is necessary to run a 10.5mm or 11mm drillbit through them to be sure the M10 bolts clear.
Double boot: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac501114f-930.html
39553
Not sure why we would ever need these, but they're still cool. Need a flange that has an attachment for both boots.
Hope this helps! Here's to no more torn boots!:wrenchin:

Many years ago the then Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club president Arnie Brandon recommended to me do not throw away any used parts as they may be of value some day, to some one, some where. DMC Northwest has a collection of used corroded parts from DeLoreans that have been used and abused. I'm referring to miscellaneous engine parts, metal brackets for the muffler, brake caliper pistons, old original alternators, fuel lines with the banjo fittings still attached. These parts aren't worth much today or tomorrow but some day they could be.
CV joints are available. No reason to buy used unless you want complete refurbished assemblies.

I've seen some pictures of your stamped stainless ones of the day. If you could get more that were stamped like the factory ones that would be great and I'd definitely be interested in one! Plates in either stainless or aluminum are easy to come by but they're flat aside from the front lip! If I need to pay upwards of $300 for one that isn't stamped, I'll just put a sheet of stainless or aluminum in my brake and make my own!

39557
As long as it is for the right size flange, yes it will work. Hose clamps will work, you just need to be aware of how wide they are. Usually you need narrower than normal hose clamps. Some of the vendors actually just sell large zip ties with the boots to keep the boots on now. I tried this the last time I did original boots but couldn't get it tight enough to keep the boot from slipping off the flange during operation. Could be because of my transmission being a tiny bit more forward but still.
I usually just buy CV boot clamps from McMaster to fit the size that I need. They look like this:
39569
You do have to have a crimping tool, which they sell at most autoparts stores and online.
