View Full Version : Frame & Body Window stuck down

Yesterday I rolled my windows down and now my passenger side won't go back up. Ive had issues with in the past where it doesn't work but then starts again. This is usually up. Is there any way of manually pulling the window up?
Fuses and relays are good. I flipped the window switch and that doesn't change anything. I can't even hear the motor turning on when I hit the switch so I don't think it's caught on something.

You'd have to disconnect the glass from the actuator arm and then it would slide up 'freely'. Need to remove door panel to make that happen if the glass is stuck down.
There may be a way to 'jump the motor' by putting lower directly to the clip. If you don't hear the motor, maybe your switch needs cleaning and that's all that's wrong. Try swapping the switches driver for pass and see if the switch is the issue. Sorry I see you already tried swapping switches.

The 2 most common problems are either the switch is bad or the window jumped off the track. You cannot pull it up manually. If swapping the left and right switches didn't work you will have to go inside the door to see what happened. You can apply power directly to the motor. You will need a 12 volt source AND a ground. By reversing polarity you change direction. It is also possible the actuator broke, you will see that when you get inside.

Well thanks for the info guys. I didn't look into the door yet, but I kept pushing the up button and it eventually went all the way up. I just won't be rolling it down for a while until I can afford to look into it further.

Ive had mine do this and i did what you did and after 5 mins it finally went up. It was getting stuck under the removal door piece inside the door. I roll mine down just never roll them down all the way because 1) this will happen or 2) it will come off the track
...I kept pushing the up button and it eventually went all the way up.
That behavior is pretty classic.
If you haven't already come to this conclusion it's the switch. Sometimes pressing harder on it or repeatedly get the window motor going. It can happen when one or both switch contacts are dirty/corroded.
The switch can be disassembled and cleaned to fix this. Clean both the up and down contacts with contact cleaner (electronic supply store). Test it with an ohmmeter before and after to know you did the job.
A replacement switch is the other way to go. In that case you might want to sell the old switch to one of us.

I swapped switches with the driver side and there was no issue then

That is the best first test when a window stops working suddenly. Swap the switches, then you can tell if its a bad switch or a bad motor (or other wiring).

I had the same thing happen to my driver window. I was going in to change the door handle and as the window rolled down, there was a sound and you could see the window kind of jump - like it stuck and then moved. I didn't think anything of it, but after I replaced the handle and went to roll the window up it wouldn't go. I tried the other window switch and nothing. You can hear the motor getting power, and I even tried the force the window up manually while getting the motor going up but it won't budge. So it's good to know it might be off the track and not a bad motor.

Don't you and Lou mean regulator as pertaining the window motor. An actuator is for door locks and a stock Delorean has solenoids instead as you know.

That term, "actuator", applies to anything that can make something move. You're right, most often in the Delorean world we use the term actuator for the thingy that locks and unlocks the doors and regulator for the thingy that moves the windows up and down. You say tomato and I say tomaato. In the Lotus world they have another one, "capsule" for the small ones on the motor.

Actually......an actuator in normal automotive parlance generally refers to a small electrical gear drive motor (usually part of the door power lock circuit) whereas a regulator is the cable & tube or steel arm type of linkage after the motor that moves or regulates movement of an attached window of some sort. In general dictionary terms you can interpret both to be similiar but in common automotive usage mixing these terms would be very confusing at best IMHO. That being said you may call it whatever you like!

Sorry that name is taken! You can call it Johnny Actuator as mine is called Johnny Regulator. Now I need a name for the P/S regulator?

I thought the "Johnny Actuator" was the handle on the toilet!
