View Full Version : Anyone tried blacklight in dash?

What bulb(s) size does the dash take and how do you get to them?

You can use LED strips in blacklight colors. I did mine with a RGB strip and a small controller under the dash so I can mix any color and brightness along with my OE rheostat controls.

That's brilliant.
Where do you exactly put the LED strips? Do you have the part number? How did you wire it?
Thank you in advance

Thanks, I will do a write up on where to mount with pics. Basically, I pull the cluster apart, the led strips face up to the binnicle's light box, and the diffused light then bounces back down on the instruments. I tried it the other way but it was too harsh and too many shadows.

The strips are 12v so all I did was use a bulb wire from the HVAC panel (which is no longer used thanks to Dave's LED HVAC panel). The great thing is the controller is out of sight, easy o adjust and has a memory so whatever I leave it on stays that way even when I turn off the power.

I did the same thing as Michael. There's a write up somewhere on this board on how to do it. Definitely put them on the top of the cluster facing up to bounce the light in. I tried putting them over the holes facing down and they were too bright and also did not allow the option of just using stock lighting.

I bought my strip and controller as a kit at Auto Zone. Most auto parts stores have these though they're typically more expensive there than if you buy on-line.

It'd be kinda cool if the all the numbers and letters were black light sensitive- thus you'd have the 80's arcade game look going on

Not black light but close. Some numbers have a glow kinda look with the blue leds. There is a total of 76 in the cluster, 19 x4 bulbs.

Nope. Not at all! Not glaring what so ever. The damn camera phone makes it brighter than it really is. I drive this alot at night and its total fine. You have to see it in person to see how it is.

That just made me think of switching my rheostat out for the color dial. I didnt think of that and went with a blutooth receiver from Autozone I think.

Drove it tonight on a nice long cruise. Totally fine. What color dashboard I never did like is the old Volkswagen style dashboards that will purple with red needles and those things would give me a headache for driving this DeLorean with all the blue lights and it is totally comfortable at night and a lot of people that were with me in this car feel the same way.

Privet aircraft usually use red instrument lights to reduce night vision blinding. You also carry a flashlight with a red lens to read instruments if your electrical power fails.

My sons 2005 Pontiac G6 has red instrument lights but most other new cars use other colors.

Pontiac has been using red for decades now and looks great. This camera phones today enhance light effects, especially darker images. Yes my car is bright and clear at night, but far from glaring or blinding. No where near the effect the picture suggests. You'll see soon enough at a event. [emoji3]

Exactly this. Red is the color to use; photographers and astronomers carry red flashlights when viewing/shooting outdoors at night for the same reason. I own one myself.

My sons 2005 Pontiac G6 has red instrument lights but most other new cars use other colors.

There's a lot of white light in modern instrument panels, though I have seen other colors. But even the brightest settings are intentionally made dim enough to not affect night vision while still making the instrumentation readable - and modern vehicles have backlit instrument panels, so it's just the letters and numbers that light up.

Standard car map lights have been shown to reduce visibility by 10 to 20%. If your lights are brighter and more spread out than a map light, it's compromising your vision.

I will say my blue are not bright as they look. Had the wife in the car last night. Says its nice and tranquil and far from blinding. The 4 bulbs that shine down have 19 leds per bulb for a total of 76 leds. I had to slightly mod the cluster for it. I did this mod about 4 years ago and never had a issue at night. Dumb camera phones WILL make my car look really REALLY bright. My map light in the car are 105 lumens each along with the trunk, engine comp and tag lights.

You keep saying it's not "blinding" but neither are map lights. Yet like I said earlier, regular old map lights have been proven to decrease night vision by a significant percentage. Your lights cover more area and are at least as bright as a map light. Yes, it looks great. But you have a problem.

Side-note: It's not just your eyes. That's the largest part of it, but there's another factor: more interior light == more glass reflections == further reduction in vision. And blue is actually the worst color for all of these factors.

It doesn't matter if you believe me or not. Your setup is dangerous. What you choose to do with that information is up to you.

Well you can say all you want about my car and how "dangerous" yet have you seen my car in person? Have you seen it or drove it at night? So you think what you want cause its not your car and have no idea how its like. Besides I work nights, i drive at night and my 2011 Honda Civic with factory blue and white lights are just as bright as the DeLorean's blue lights. Why is it I have near 20/20 vision as well still. Like I said, say what you want, my car does not blind me not does it reflect anything and impair night time visibility. Until you been in my car, you dont have a leg to stand on with your judging.

I don't have to see it in person. I've been studying light interactions for a very long time, and I understand how it works. There are papers that discuss studies related to what I'm talking about. There's also common sense that demonstrates lit areas enclosed by glass that are brighter than surrounding areas will generate reflections on that glass reducing exterior distance viewing. That's just simple physics.

Why do you think rally car drivers and endurance racers completely cover their instrument panels with black felt when driving at night? Shits and giggles?

But hey, facts are for suckers.

You'll take all the praise in the world with no problem. But the minute someone points out an issue that you don't like, that means they must be full of crap and it's time to find every possible excuse as to why they can't possibly have a point.

Believe what you want. Pepper it with as many "lol"s and as much sarcasm as you like. Doesn't change the facts.

I imagine the resulting crash from reduced visibility due to excessive interior lighting will be that much worse.

Well and at that point i will say what you been studying is a crock of shit. So what, i need to listen to your and your studies on how i should have my car light up at night? If you dont like it thats fine, its your opinion. But when you start to call my car I built dangerous, then you and I are going to have a serious problem. Everything i done to my car is safe and reliable and all my lighting is just fine for ME, not you. Like i said, your ass has never been in my car and there is hardly a reflection but all you have to do is look at a picture and all of a sudden you know the laws of physics with my car. Believe what you want but keep your "dangerous" ideas to yourself.

Cool. I have some questions:

1. "But when you start to call my car I built dangerous, then you and I are going to have a serious problem." / "But i will get defensive when you state my car is dangerous." - That's the root of your whole issue with this. You refuse to believe the information because you don't like it. Too bad. Life is full of bad news. Get used to it.

If I were telling you that it looks like shit, then you would have every right to be pissed off because that's subjective opinion - and a pretty nasty thing to say. But that's not what I'm doing; your car's interior looks very cool. But it's compromising the safety of you and your passenger(s), whether or not you want to believe it. I highly recommend reading this (https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/58724/99834.pdf). Protip: They say everything I've been saying. (Even down to the fact that blue light is the worst for this stuff.)

But let's face it... You won't read that. Those guys have never even SEEN your car in person! The idiots!

2. "Well and at that point i will say what you been studying is a crock of shit." - Okay. Please cite your sources. Specifically, the studies you've done (and methods used) that disprove A) the law of reflection, and B) the paper I cited. You may want to publish the results of your studies, because it will make every physicist on the planet sit up and take notice.

3. "Everything i done to my car is safe and reliable" - Great. GM developed a best-practices guide for automotive lighting. Since you so confidently state that the facts are wrong, you must have referenced SOME kind of safety guidelines when developing the system in your car. Can you cite which guidelines you used and how they compare with these guidelines (http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/Futures/LF-Auto/interior.asp) and the measurements table (http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/Futures/projects/img/gmstudytable.gif)?

4. "Like i said, your ass has never been in my car and there is hardly a reflection but all you have to do is look at a picture and all of a sudden you know the laws of physics with my car." - If the laws of physics are different in your car than they are for the rest of the universe, then yeah I admit that would absolutely put a dent in my argument. Can you please explain how this is the case, and what universal laws your car breaks and how? (Side-note: You kind of proved my point here: "there is hardly a reflection." Protip: Hardly a reflection is still a reflection, and still impedes night vision.)

Ok but my Honda has reflections and thats blue and stock. So everything your stating does not apply. Because if it did apply then all your car companys will be sued for safety issues. Everything at night has a reflections. I can see the dash lite up on my winshield at night. So, if you wanna preach on how my car is dangerous and unsafe, maybe you and your books can go to the major car manufacturers and tell them what they do is unsafe. If you like it thats cool. But you keep stating how dangerous it is. For the last few years i work nights, drive that blue dash Honda at night and the DeLorean but never once had a issue with my vision be it my eyes of outward visibility. So, as i stated what you and those people are stating have no idea what they are talking about. Ok, it might bother people with sensitive eyes. Everyone that has driven my car has never had a issue. Hell, the older VW dash boards with purple and red lighting gave me a headache. My DeLorean is no different at night as my Honda. And i spend at least 3hrs a day, in the dark in my commute to work and home. I dont get what your saying dude. Im trying not to be a dick, really im not but your implying something that doesn't have nothing to do with you and my car or the effects. ...which is why I customized my electronics to kill all but the most necessary of indicators for night driving, and it will live most of its distance transport life being pulled by my Suburban rather than actually being driven at night.

Besides, the only way it would be a pot/kettle situation is if I insisted my car somehow doesn't have those problems. Hell, the scanner light on the front of the car and the 6 halogen fog lights are also a significant safety concern. There are no front seat belts. With the bright dash lights, it's a safety disaster.

The difference is that I readily admit to, and accept those risks. I'm not pretending they don't exist.

I have to say, I agree that the blue spectrum of light is harsher on vision, but it is made a moot point when you consider that modern headlights are at eye level when driving a Delorean. These, I can assure you, will absolutely wreck your night driving vision. An SUV or truck with HID bulbs driving towards you will be insanely worse than any interior lighting.

It's definitely a good point with the spectrum of light for headlights especially with today's modern cars with HID lights and high intensity LED lights but the thing is the photographs that I took with my digital camera phone if you were next to me and look through my phone then looked at the inside of the car the blue light is much brighter on the phone. The intensity of the blue that is inside the car has no effect on my vision nor does it make my eyes feel like they are straining and I've driven this at night for several hours and was totally fine. I know different spectrums of light can have different effects on people's Vision but I can assure you as long as I have had this done in my car I've never had a issue with my vision and the fact that I work at night and I'm on the road day and night while it is still dark out.

After 8 years I'm shocked I'm still alive with this "living on the edge" lifestyle I live.

If you're really, "Living on the Edge". Why do you log on in, "Invisible Mode?" :confused0:

Just my .02 cents on this issue.
My new mini van has blue dash and infotainment system lighting. I Love the color except when I have to drive it in the dark. (Which is every morning going to work)...

The first pic was taken in daylight over a month ago. The other 2 were taken in the dark a bit ago.

I live in a rural area and the dash lights do tend to reflect on the side widows so I have do be extra careful when turning off/on to streets.

And I keep getting ridiculed about the blue lights in my interior and Reflections on the glass and my 2011 Honda Civic can be just as bad at night and that's even having the lights turn down on a lower intensity, you just can't avoid Reflections on the glass. But like I said and I can assure everybody that as long as I've been driving my DeLorean out with a blue dashboard I've never once had any outward visibility issues or should I say no worse than a newer car.

Reflections off a Delorean windscreen. That screen at such an angle how the hell can a recessed cluster even hope to reflect in your eyes?

Oh i know Michael but I don't see anything on the front windshield and hardly see anything on the door glass and actually I see more light reflection in my Honda than I do the DeLorean.

I have rented that type of Van, and a couple of Fords with the blue dash lights and I found them a bit distracting at night too.

I also noticed that it is easy to accidentally leave the main beams on as the blue icon just disappears in with all the other blue.

I think car interior designers have moved from "good ergonomic design" to "ooh, shiny" in their quest for younger buyers. In Georges second picture it is hard to find the one warning light that is lit.

My old Saab has a "night panel" button that extinguishes every dash light except for the speedo (and only the 0-80 mph part of that)

Here Is my Civic at 4am heading to work. You can clearly see reflection on the windows. My DeLorean's blue interior, barely see anything.

Taking photos of your own dash while doing almost 50 mph in the dark.

You're just all kinds of disaster waiting to happen.

Christian is definately a menace. Using a phone while driving, blue dash lights, double digit speeds at night...I'm just glad he survived the ordeal to bring us that picture.

The other day I partook of the exact same behavior so I shouldn't joke. I used one hand and lifted up an item to my face (while driving at night nonetheless)...granted it was a cheeseburger but the actions required were the same. I am lucky to be here to tell the tale.

Completely forgot but I did buy some UV bulbs for the license plate. Thought it might look cooler, but it had no effect. Ill see if I can rig up a 12v source and light up the dash with them.
