Where does everyones gear shifter sit when in neutral? dead centre, forming a nice pyramid?

When i bought my car, the shifter sat so far forward, it would be virtually impossible to get the car into gear. IIRC, I adjusted the forward shift linkage to pull the lever back, which offset the bell crank a bit. I believe ideally, you want the bell crank to remain as perpendicular to the sides of the frame as possible. The car shifted much better, but the lever still sits far forward in the neutral position. It's not a functionality issue, but an aesthetics issue. I'll take a picture.

What about your car?

Mine in neutral the stick is a little tilted back from vertical. With the gear shift in third gear, the front of the shift ball is 5.75" from the AC panel.

I took a measurement and I'm pretty close to you Dave. Almost dead on 5.75" in 3rd from the AC panel.

In the other pictures you can see how far forward it is in neutral. Do yours look the same?

My issue has nothing to do with the cross gate cable. The shifter was literally hitting the front inside of the shift plate.

Dave is it possible your shift lever is bent or was installed the wrong way? The lever should go up straight and then bend slightly back at an angle as shown below.

I'll have to double check but IIRC it is installed as it should be.

A bit late responding, but did you check your shift tube adjustment (not the cable)?
