Steering Column Moves up and down

If I grab my steering column I can move it up and down about 1 inch. It seams to be loose right under where the dash is? Is this a common problem? What is the fix ? Thanks all.

Is your steering lock loose? My steering wheel tends to droop a few weeks after I set it. (I tend to lean on it getting out of the car).

Your steering column bushing might also be toast. Get under there in the footwell and check where the column goes through the hole in the underbody. There should be a bushing around it.

Did you check the bushing where the column goes through the firewall?

Part ID 23 on this page. Where the steering column goes through the floor. Yours is probably missing.

I would have to give the knob a twist every few times I drove the car as mine would loosen up from vibration I presume. When it was tightened I could still move the steering wheel and heat it rattle in the firewall...which is how I figured out that I needed the bushing as well.

If all of the hardware is not installed correctly or if any is missing your steering lock will not lock properly. You should not have to tighten it often to hold position. I have seen many cars where the owner didn't even know the steering wheel could move and never touched the lock and the wheel never moved. Most owners just put the wheel all the way up and in and leave it there.
