Inspecting the front suspension and it appears that the lower control arm bush is working its way out of the arm
has anyone seen this before?
Am I missing something that locates the bush in the control arm, or has it lost its tolerance fit due to age etc
any advise on a fix?

That bushing is pressed in to fit. It looks like the arm is bored out and now the bushing has too much room around it. Id try a new bushing but be ready for maybe a new arm.

Does the bushing stay still within the arm as you jack it up and down? If the bushing is moving within the LCA then you are suffering the same problem bushings in Ed Uding's LCA brackets suffer when they don't have backing washers:

Because we don't have thrust arms, fore/aft forces on the LCA are tremendous. If bushings rotate in the arms (or in the LCA brackets) fore/aft forces will work them out as the arm goes up and down, just like twisting a stuck fastener back & forth as you pull it out of its hole. Bushings must stay still within the arms/brackets.
